Selling State of the Art Lighting Jim McClanahan, P.E., CEM Energy Manager, Scott County Schools, KSBA SEMP October, 2015
School Culture School administrator and personnel focus = education Background is education not finance or energy Default: just pay the bill Contrary to a business, schools have multiple decision makers Each teacher can bring items (portable heaters, refrigerators, additional lights, and microwaves) and, in many cases, have control over the temperature of their room.
School Culture (continued) Energy Initiative Funding Challenge Energy Projects: Cash and bonding capacity limitations Energy Practitioners: non-classroom position is a problem Energy Technology in Buildings is Sophisticated Educators have learned occupied and unoccupied. Control Systems for HVAC and Lighting are complex Succession training required Energy Manager Oversight or Control or Both Energy Success Stories are now classroom lessons.
Understand School Board Operations What drives your school board decisions? Student needs Budget issues Community support Staff concerns Other items Develop your options based on the school board that you are working with.
Lighting Technology Advances More innovation in lighting technology during the last 5 years than in the previous 95 years Driven largely by Federal Government s mandates on removing inefficient lighting from the market LED Lighting has improved drastically during this period of time and the cost has dropped as well Five years ago the lighting option for new buildings was either T8 or T5 but today it is LED
Identifying Opportunities What lighting in your school district draws large amount of energy (watts)? Which lighting stays on for many hours each year? For example - exit signs stay on 8,760 hours/year What maintenance costs are associated with the lighting? What rebates are available for your lighting project?
Complete Financial Analysis Determine Savings with the following steps Determine Energy Savings First Existing fixture watts minus new fixture watts Hours per year the fixture is on Number of fixtures Cost of energy per unit (kwh) Determine maintenance material that will not be needed with the new fixture Determine simple payback in years If less than one year, use general operating fund If less than two years, consider maintenance budget
Examples of Single Fixtures LED Exit Lights Metal Halide to LED (Gym or Parking Lot Lights) T12 to LED 2 x4 Fixture T8 to LED 2 x4 Fixture Various Applications with varies hours per year Rebates also are provided Following will be examples of total projects

High Bay Fluorescent Fixtures
High Bay Fluorescent vs LED Must re-lamp at least every 8 years Issue with disposal of old lamps Must have or rent high lift Requires expensive lamps and labor LED can last for over hours/year The lumen maintenance curve is much stepper for fluorescent lamps than LED s Reduced maintenance costs can make a significant impact to the savings for LED s
