Energy Efficiency Opportunities Chris Sarine (423)

Lighting introduction to efficient lighting

40-80% Typical LED Wattage Reduction

Why focus on efficient lighting? Lighting accounts for 20-35% of commercial building energy usage We can reduce lighting usage by 60% 60% (reduction)* 37% (building usage) = ~16% reduction total usage

Why retrofit to Efficient Lighting? Financial Benefits: Hidden Benefits: Reduce kw and kwh usage (Utility $$$) Improve Employee Productivity Reduce Heat Gain (little heaters) New Look, Facelift Reduce Maintenance Cost (Long life) Improve Visibility of Inventory (gas Improve Building Value (cash flow = value) stations) Improve Security Reduce Wattage/Amperage

What are the technologies

Lighting Technology History 2015: 179 Lumens/Watt

Incandescent/Halogen (1000 hour life) Emitting light as a result of being heated.

Fluorescent (20,000-30,000 hour life) Fluorescent lamps work by ionizing mercury vapor in a glass tube. This causes electrons in the gas to emit photons at UV frequencies. The UV light is converted into standard visible light using a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube.

HID (High Intensity Discharge) (24,000-40,000 hour life) High-intensity discharge lamps (HID lamps) are a type of electrical gasdischarge lamp which produces light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube. This tube is filled with both gas and metal salts.

LED (50, ,000+ hour life) A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. Low Energy (70% Reduction) Long life Better looking light

What To Target Helps Payback Metal Halides (1000W, 400W!!) T12s (40W) High Wattage fixtures (1000W300W > 100W-30W) Incandescent Bulbs (simple, great payback) Long Operating Hours 24/7 Two and Three Shifts High kwh rate Areas with Good Rebates (10-50%)

What NOT To Target Hurts Payback T8s CFLs Bank Hours Buildings with many non-operating lights (can t use less than nothing) Exterior lighting on timers

How do hours affect my payback?

How do we save energy with lighting?

Simple example Existing: (100) 400W Metal Halide High Bay (458 System Watts) Proposed: (100) 144W LED High Bay Hours: Warehouse, 2 Shifts, 5 Days/Week (4,160) kwh Rate: $.09 Project Cost: $5,000 Project Savings: $1,175 Project Payback: 4.25 years Before Rebates/Incentives 100 * 458W = 4,580W Existing Watts 100 * 144W = 1,440 Proposed Watts 4,580W - 1,440W = 3,140 Reduced Watts (3,140W * 4,160)/1000 = 13,062 Reduced kwh 13,062 * $0.09/kWh = $1,175 Reduced Cost

What is the process? 1. Walkthrough with client, determine need 2. Perform lighting audit with full counts 3. Enter information into energy calculator include wattages, hours of operations, and kwh rate 4. Engineer high ROI solutions that meet the customer s needs 5. Create proposal with actionable project costing and accurate incentive and grant opportunities 6. Implement turn key solution to client 7. Provide warranty

Conclusion Lighting is the common low hanging fruit of the efficiency world Great Savings, High ROI Solution Large Market (look around you) Easy to understand. Easy to sell. (hours, kwh rate, wattage reduced) Higher Competition But there are other GREAT solutions...

HVAC

Why focus on HVAC? HVAC accounts for 30% of a building s energy usage EES can save up to 60% of HVAC operating expense 60% (reduction)* 30% (building usage) = ~19% reduction total usage

Enerfit...is a VFD (variable frequency drive) retrofit for SINGLE ZONE PACKAGE UNITS

Enerfit Benefits kwh Savings $$ Increased Dehumidification Can act as Control Module Provides Monitoring and Diagnostics Less Wear and Tear on Unit

Good Candidates for Enerfit Single Zone, Package Unit (RTU) 10 Ton+ (marginal addl cost for larger units) Set to ON = 24/7 3-Phase Humid Climates

Building Envelope

Building Envelope The building envelope is the physical separator between the interior and exterior of a building. Components of the envelope are typically: walls, floors, roofs, fenestrations and doors. Fenestrations are any opening in the structure: windows, skylights, clerestories, etc.

Cool Roof A cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Coating TPO (New Roof)

Window Film Window film is a thin film/laminate retrofit coating upgrade that can be installed to the interior of glass surfaces in automobiles, boats, homes and buildings. 3 Components of Light Visible Light UV Light Solar Energy (Radiant heat)

Window Film Opportunities 1. West 2. East 3. South (unless shaded) Single Pane Comfort Issues Glare Problems

Refrigeration

Refrigeration

Why focus on Refrigeration? Refrigeration accounts for 55% of a building s energy usage EES can save up to 65% of HVAC operating expense 65% (reduction)* 55% (building usage) = ~35% total usage reduction

Refrigeration Solutions Electronic Commutated Motors Evaporator Fan Controls Night Covers Anti-Sweat Heater Controls LED Lighting Magic Gel??

Rebates Lighting: 10-40% Refrigeration 7-10% Window Film: 5-10% HVAC: 5% Tax Deductions Lighting: $0.60/ft2 Building Env: $0.60/ft2 HVAC: $0.60/ft2 Example: $100,000 lighting retrofit, 100,000 ft2 facility, rural Rebates: 20%, $20,000 Tax Deductions: 23%, $21,000 Grants: 25%, $25,000 Total: 47.1%, $47,100 Grants Energy Efficiencies: 25% Solar: 25%
