Energy in Curling Clubs Ian MacLellan October 31, 2015

How You Are Charged energy - per kilowatt hour demand - $ per kilowatt of monthly peak - how you can tell if you have one regulated charges Distribution, utility and debt retirement costs Global Adjustment Contracts signed by the energy organization IESO OCEB Ontario Clean Energy Benefit ending

Rate Categories You have choices & some are bad If your club uses < 250,000 kwh / yr You re on the Regulated Price Plan (RPP) for homes, but also used for business under 250,000 kwh per year If your club uses > 250,000 kwh/yr Spot price plus the Global Adjustment

Time of Use Reg Price Plan (RPP)

Tiered Regulated Price Plan

Tiered RPP with Demand

Spot Price or Contract Plus GA

Know Your Electricity System Access data on your utility web site and monitor use Plan when you turn the plant on / off If not electronic, find out when your meter is read August September

Electricity Users Ice Plant 8 sheets 800 kwh per day - $ sheets 600 kwh per day - $ 84 4 sheets kwh per day - $ 56 Shed Lighting - HID 8 sheets $ 32 6 sheets $ 24 4 sheets - $ 16

How to Reduce Energy Costs Energy Conservation do the cheap and boring stuff first programmable thermostat on furnace LED light bulbs everywhere possible, inclu exit sign (coupons available on your utility s web site) Weatherstrip around the doors to outside AND the doors to the ice shed Caulk around all windows / plumbing Wrap water heater and pipes

Energy Conservation Incentives Small Business Lighting Program Free up to $ 1,500, if under 50 kw Contact your utility for eligibility Current program ends Dec 31, program will expand eligibility and $ cap, but will require some investment Retrofit program contact utility For shed lighting retrofits. Incentives up to 25% For control systems. Incentives up to 50%

Electricity Control

Ice Plant Control Systems Control systems save energy by Making the ice warmer from 11pm to 6 am Saving electricity Making the shed cooler from 11 pm to 6 am Saving gas and electricity Less heat has to be refrigerated away Operating the brine pump only when necessary with controls, and/or install a 2 speed brine pump Saving on pump use and reducing heat added to brine

Night Setback

Control Systems 1. Do it manually maybe Turn ice temp up & shed temp down at 11 pm & up at 6 am depends on recovery capacity 2. Install timers and thermostats controls Get your ice plant maintenance person to install thermostats and timers on brine/ice/heaters 3. Install a custom control system Varaxis (St Cath), AC Mechanical (Ottawa), Black and MacDonald (Whitby?)

Economics of Control System Electricity Cost Sept 2014 $ 5,770 Cost of control system $ 17,000 SaveOn Energy Incentive $ 8,500 Net Cost of system $ 8,500 Electricity Cost Sept 2015 $ 4,200 Monthly Saving $ 1,570 Annualized Saving > $ 10,000 Payback Period 6 months

Lighting Retrofits Retrofit from HID or T12 fluorescent Install T8/T5 fluorescent, LED, mag induction Wire for less light during ice maintenance Use dimmers with LED SaveOn energy incentive for at least 25% Payback is in the year period

How to Get the Energy Incentive SaveOnEnergy.ca or your utility Apply BEFORE retrofitting anything Lighting retrofits are prescriptive, and can be through any contractor 2-4 yr payback Control systems are custom retrofits and require before/after scenarios calculating the source of the savings 8-16 month payback Look to Enbridge and Union Gas as well

Other Energy Saving Opportunities High efficiency or variable speed motors Consider whether 24/7 ventilation in washrooms/kitchens is necessary Set the pebble water heater to 130 F and turn it and other water heaters off in the summer 2 inch thick ice costs 10% more than 1 inch ice Check fridge/freezer for interior non-led lighting and gasket anti-sweat heater

Stuff People try to Sell You Dirty power cleaner, harmonics wave fixer Will not save kwh, but will save a bit on kw demand Might save 2-3% An electricity contract at far less than RPP Avoid anything priced below 10 /kwh which does not mention Global Adjustment Since curling clubs operate 7 days, 8 am to 11 pm, with compressors on overnight, they are good loads A new, hugely more efficient water heater

Energy Prices

Electricity Price Components Regulated Charges 30 % Energy Charges 70 % Market Price 30 % Global Adjustment 70 % Average Market Price /kwh Forecast Market Price Cost of a Retail Contract 3.9 Cost of a Bulk Contract 3.5
