NGUYEN HONG LONG The Center For Creativity And Sustainability Study And Consultancy Vietnam The Eco-innovation Project 1
Eco-innovation Colombia Peru Two components: Egypt Uganda Kenya South Africa Malaysia Sri Lanka Vietnam Technical assistance: Setting new business strategy; building roadmaps; creating project plans; implementation, etc. Thanks to funding by the European Commission with UN Environment support, eco-innovation was implemented in 9 countries, for 44 SMEs, within 3 sectors. Agri-food Chemicals Metals Policy development : Problem framing; policy formulation; policy implementation; monitoring and evaluation. 2
Viet Lien Vietnam s Guava Farm Innovator before eco-innovation Viet Lien Small business producing tea from guava leaves. Problems High or inappropriate use of pesticides and fertilizers - affected soil and water quality. Guava tree diseases - low fruit quality, very poor productivity. Eco-innovative business model - four objectives: 1. Turn competitors (guava farmers) into customers; 2. Switch farmers from chemical-based cultivation to VIETGAP-compliant model (Good Agricultural Practices); 3. Bring new stakeholders into the business model; 4. Expand the business through new product lines and eco-tourism. 3 Image:
Viet Lien Vietnam s Guava Farm Innovator implementing eco-innovation; reaping the benefits! The benefits: Revenue increases from new services; Job creation in community; Safer, higher quality organic guava supply; Diversification (guava soap, juices) leading to long-term income potential; Recovery of soil and water quality, human health. 4 The process phase-by-phase innovation! Creation of technical hub within community - providing consulting services to farmers; Offering guava biomass processing services - creating natural fertilizer; Diversifying product range new business opportunities. Image:
ELEGANCE COMPANY LTD., utions to commercializing Biomass Gasifiers in Vie Build Product Service System (PSS), including Agricultural Activities manufacturers, wholesalers/retailers, local mechanics and consumers to sell and operate biomass gasifier PSS. Biochar Biomass waste Thermal Energy Cooking by biomass gasifier Create a new Value chain for agricultural wastes, by-products and eliminate negative effects to environment caused by agricultural cultivation and cooking.
ELEGANCE COMPANY LTD., Green value chains applying biomass gasification Farmers Biomass pellet making service provider Pellet dealers Industry biomass boiler New Value Chain of biomass waste at households Farm Biomass gasifier Biochar Cook stove wholesalers Biochar dealers CCS Fertilizer producers Farm New Value Chain of Biomass pellets New Value Chain of Biochar
Malaysia Accel Graphic System Provider of ink and printing technologies in Asia- Pacific market. Eco-innovative business model: 1. Switching core product to sustainable ink 2. Accessing new markets through Eco-labelling 3. New service opportunities through chemical leasing model Benefits of eco-innovation: Additional revenue from services offered due to chemical leasing Increase in customer loyalty - waste and materials reduced Eco-labelling offers access to growing niche in Asia keeping up with more demanding regulatory environment, and with competition Environmental reuse of unused substances Worker health less hazardous exposure to chemicals 7 Image:
Colombia - GALCO S.A.S Medium-sized metals enterprise operating in Latin America - 4 business lines focusing on 2 different metal processes. Before eco-innovation High dependency on zinc; High consumption of hydrochloric acid and of natural gas; Insufficient installed capacity to galvanize large size structures After eco-innovation (two new business models): Job creation Increased profits new customers, markets Reduced hazardous effluent Reduced cost of raw materials, and the cost of effluent disposal Extended useful life of metallic parts, thus maintenance costs Reduced carbon footprint 8 Image:
Recommendations Integrate eco-innovation into the DNA of the circular economy! - More investment required. - More access to technology is fundamental. - Effective leadership is crucial we need the will to change the status quo and innovate! 9
Conclusions 10 Three sectors, 44 SMEs, nine countries a global experience - Experience shows we cannot work in silos, that co-ordination works best. - Experience shows that creating partnerships is fundamentally important for eco-innovation to work. - The key is having policies which build capacity for potential eco-innovators and their partners.
