1 ELM Workshops on international job-hunting tactics 1. Expanding Opportunities What s next if your career abroad comes to a sudden halt due to the economic situation? Over the last few months, significant shifts have taken place in national labour markets and economies all around the world. The credit crunch has made people redundant. Naturally, this affects not only people who work in their home country, but also international employees. Classic approaches to career planning need to be re-considered, conventional strategies need to be re-configured, as finding work in your home country, in your host country, or anywhere else has become more difficult than ever before. The ELM workshop Expanding Opportunities, helps your professionals to do exactly that reconsider their options and rethink their strategies. The three-day course aims to open new horizons for foreign talent, striving for success in a tightening sector. In interactive sessions employees are prepared for taking the next step on their individual career path. Duration: Two afternoons with one week in between, followed by one full day after two weeks. Size of group: Maximum of 12 senior professionals. Content: Focuses on new opportunities in an ever-changing national labour market for international employees. They can re-evaluate their options and strategies to achieve the successful career they planned. Costs: The fee is 3050 Euro both exc. VAT plus travel expenses. Getting the max out of international assignments Trends on the international labour market, changing market circumstances, utilisation of potential; these are just some examples concerning international assignments. When do labour conditions become an expat policy? How can an organisation utilise their international policy to the utmost? These questions are important for every internationally oriented organisation. Expertise in Labour Mobility s managing director, Nannette Ripmeester, provides training and advice for companies which intend to maximise their policies concerning expatriation. An international assignment can indeed be enjoyable for the person in question, but there is also a business rationale behind. Considering this, the employee represents your organisation abroad and therefore it is important to develop a policy that gets the most out of the employee and their employer. Nannette Ripmeester provides a presentation with theses from which discussions will start. In this sense, there will be a discussion concerning, for example, trends in the expat sector, developing employees and the tasks of the Human Resource Department in this framework, amongst others. Executive coaching: Mobility on the International Labour Market During Executive coaching sessions, Expertise in Labour Mobility provides customised advice for institutions on making the utmost of international business deals. For example, one of the ELM specialised executive coaches provided training on closing a deal in Abu Dhabi for Yardi Systems B.V.: The executive coaches of Expertise in Labour Mobility provide in-house training for various organisations such as Yardi Systems B.V. to maximise the effectiveness of the managers of those organisations while doing business abroad. An executive training session is designed to suit particular cliental needs and may cover a.o. information on a particular region and its particularities, detailed information on communication issues, peculiarities of the decision-making process, issues regarding giving presentations, truly understanding the messages (i.e. read-between-the-lines ), how to establish credit in that region and how to follow-up contacts and maintain relationships. ELM has specialised executive coaches for most European countries and people specialised in doing business in India, China and the Middle East. Duration: This workshop last 4 hours. 4 4. Making it work: Think Global Act Local In the international labour market some significant shifts have taken place. Under the motto Think Global Act Local, Expertise in Labour Mobility attempts to make companies aware of the implications of cultural differences in a changing world. Cultural influences will not diminish, but become harder to decode. The second millennium is considered to be the century of globalisation. Markets and economies integrate more and more, information technology is developing faster and faster. Due to this globalisation, fundamental changes raise in the ways of working. To attract and keep the right employees and motivate them, HR-managers should understand the dynamics of the global workforce which exists nowadays. ELM s managing director, Nannette Ripmeester, is a professional speaker and provides customised information and practical advice to keep organisations up to date concerning the dynamic international labour market. 5 5. Special expat workshop: Introduction to the Netherlands Being new to a country is a challenge for each expatriate. Also being new in the Netherlands comes with its standard difficulties and challenges. To start with, the Dutch are overly direct, something they themselves see as openness, but that most foreigners take as being somewhat rude. What makes the Dutch Dutch? The Dutch pride themselves in their tolerance and flexibility and indeed they do tolerate certain things (think soft-drugs, euthanasia) that other countries forbid. Yet also Dutch tolerance has its limits. After working here for a while, you may have come across the relative lack of hierarchy in Dutch business and have noticed, for example, your co-workers blithely ignore authority. And then there is the matter of the dropjes! Now, as an expat, there are two approaches you can take: You can say: I ll just have to bear with it and hope to get used to it, or you can ask yourself Why are the Dutch so Dutch and what can I do to understand them better?. Introduction to the Netherlands has been designed by Expertise in Labour Mobility to give expats (and their partners) a head start with Dutch society. It is aimed at people who want to make the best of their stay in the Netherlands and who want to get to grips with the Dutch quickly. You will receive an introduction to the Dutch language and practical information on the Dutch labour market and Dutch culture. This workshop provides you with all you need to know to make your stay in the Netherlands a success. It may not help you to appreciate dropjes, but it may help you to value the Dutch directness slightly better. Duration: This workshop takes a full day.
