3 01. Introduction: The Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) is an all-country organization representing industrial sector. The Federation has dedicated its attention and activities towards improvement of industrial relations, and productive employment as a vital input in economic development. Mission of BEF is to protect and promote the legitimate rights, and represent the views of employers on employment and related socio economic policy issues at national and international level, and to facilitate labor market efficiency and skills development for enterprise sustainability and national economic growth. The Training unit of BEF offers comprehensive training courses in line with the identified training needs of the corporate sector. As per yearly training plan for 2015, Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) organized Training program on Workplace safety and compliance to its staff of members firm and others company. The major goal of the training is to raise awareness, improve knowledge and skills of the participants regarding OHS at the workplace and measures to be taken to ensure safe & healthy environment and compliance issues at workplace As per approved plan, the training conducted on June Total 52 (Fifty two) selected participants those are potential and working for organization development especially for workplace safety & compliance issues in different industry sector attended the training program. 02. Objective of the training: The program was designed to achieve following objectives: Overall course objective: The overall objective of this training program is to raise awareness, improve knowledge and skills of the participants regarding OHS at the workplace and measures to be taken to ensure safe & healthy environment and compliance issues at workplace Specific objective: After end of the course the participants will be able To get an updated knowledge of workplace safety and its application for compliance. To Know the Legislative framework of OSH and how to ensure at workplace To know the factors need to be more attention in order to reduce workplace hazards and create friendly environment To learn the safety and ergonomics issues To know the work related stress and how to overcome To explain risk assessment and hazard control To discuss the key factors to ensure compliance 03. Overview of the training: Course Content: To ensure the objectives an approved curriculum followed. To meet the training objectives necessary sessions were included into the module like Introduction to occupational safety and health, Legislative framework of OSH, Fire and Explosion, Hazardous Substance, Accident Prevention and Reporting, Trip, Slip and Fall, Electric Safety, Work Ergonomics, Personal Protective Equipment and Key Factors to ensure compliance Report of Training on workplace safety and compliance Page # 3 of 15

4 Methods: The training was anchored on action learning methodology where the participants raised questions and facilitator answered all those with practical example and experience sharing. Most of session was lectured with question-answer and a maximum of experiential and action learning exercises. The uniqueness of the methodology was that the facilitators do not spoon-feed the participants. Rather, the participants themselves derived the learning points of the various training actives, and internalize their application into their own real world. Materials and Equipment: We supplied each participant a training bag, a pen, a writing pad, a program schedule. A number of materials and visual aids were used as per requirements of the participants like Flip chart, ZOPP board, Marker pen, Speaker, Plastic folder, Flip chart board, Hand out, Lap top, Multi-media, Photo camera etc. Program schedule: Considering the above-mentioned content, resource person prepared the training program schedule very carefully which is enclosed as (Annex-01). Program duration: The duration of the training program was June 2015 (02 days). Training program started at 9.30 AM and closed at 5.00 PM each day. Venue: The training conducted at Conference hall of MCCI, Chamber building (4 th Floor), Motijheel, Dhaka Participant s of the Training: Total 52 participants (Male-43 & Female-09) attended the training. Member firm of BEF and others company selected their employees for training those are relevant, intellectual, committed are, potential and hard worker. Most of the participants were the member of Management Team of their company and working in the field of Human Resource Management department. All are academic graduate and have minimum 01 year working experience with national and multinational company. List of participants are enclosed (Annex-02). Arrangement of refreshment: As per project guideline, the timetable of training program was 02 days. Each day represented eight hours including 2 time tea breaks for 30 minutes and lunch and prayer break for another one hour. During tea breaks, tea with light snacks served to the participants. Every supplied food was formalin free and delicious. Implementation process: Resource person developed the course content with the consultation of BEF authority to fulfill the demand of the participants through Training Need Assessment. Before starting the training program, course coordinator have already completed process documentation including program schedule, course curriculum, participants handouts, presentation paper, invite to participants through , ensure participants presence in time, preparation of training materials, photocopy of session materials, class note and so on. This was a basic training course and we tried to mitigate the common arise problem in the activity implementation. To achieve the training objectives we hired a training consultant who are directly involve with HRM and training as well. Training coordinator maintained all kinds of prescribed process and ensures training quality every stage of the training including training evaluation. 5 Resource Person: A pool of resource person including Mr. Shah Alam Talukder, PEng, Engr. M.Hafizur Rahman, PEng, CEO, Summit oil and Shipping Company Ltd and Mr. Omar Faruq, OSH Consultant. They all having more than 15 years of hands-on exposure to all-round and workplace safety & compliance issues in industry, Have extensive experience in the design, implementation such kind of training program. Also have practical experience to conduct such types of training program in different company in Bangladesh. Also Mr. Joha Jamilur Rahman, Training coordinator, BEF act as course coordinator and provide support based on demand of resource person and participants. Certificate: After successfully completion of the training course every participants have received training certificate from BEF. At the end, Joint Secretary of BEF and Resource person distribute the certificate among the participants. 04. Detail Session Discussion: Day-01 Introductory session: At the very beginning of the training, registration of the participants was done by the course coordinator. The training started with valuable speech from Shaquib Quoreshi, Secretary, BEF at AM where resource person presents in that inaugural session. He said that this is a valuable training for us and we need to very attentive in the session. Now a day s all company needs to comply the OSH issues and it s extremely important for the company. Resource person encouraged the participants to make the session success through proper utilization of resource persons & their active participation. The Secretary of BEF officially opened the 02 (Two) days long training. All the participants introduce their name, designation and company to others. The experienced resource person shared the course outline & objectives to the participants. Discussion Session: After expectation, the resource person conducted the following session by using different methods. Introduction to occupational safety and health Legislative framework of OSH Electric Safety Fire and Explosion Accident Prevention and Reporting Day-02 Recapitulation on previous day s session: At the very beginning of the 2nd day the resource person exchanged greetings to the participants. Then he told the selected spokes person to read out the previous day s activities. Discussion Session: After recapitulation of the previous day the resource person conducted the following session by using different methods. Hazardous Substance Trip, Slip and Fall Work Ergonomics Personal Protective Equipment Key Factors to ensure compliance During the discussions, the resource person addressed the entire question raised by the participants. Participants shared their views and practical knowledge on the training session. Participant s interaction was meaningful. Report of Training on workplace safety and compliance Page # 5 of 15

6 05. Training evaluation: The program was evaluated through structured questionnaire. On the last day of the training course, participants evaluated the whole training program through prescribed format. Reaction of the participants regarding training i.e.- session presentation, Experience sharing, Group exercise, fulfillment of participants expectation, course duration, duration of each session, participation, methods, environment of classroom, quality of food supplied in the workshop, overall management of training, and quality of resource persons had been evaluated through a course evaluation checklist. The training monitored and observed by the authority of BEF. Evaluation result are shown See annex Feedback by the participants in on-going training session: In ongoing training they provided some valuable comments and feedback in order to ensure training quality. Their comments were highly appreciated and we have accumulated all the recommendation into the session presentation and applied to next training. Their suggestion encourage us and helpful for smoothly conduct the training. The following are some key feedback by the participants The training may be arranged for different business sector like RMG, Banking, Pharmaceuticals, and Ceramics etc. This training was nice as because of training delivery tools & techniques. Provided training handouts should be improved and need to provide soft copy so that we can share our learning with other colleagues at workplace. This is one of the best training programs as I have participated and love to join any other training program organized by the BEF. The training was wonderful & lives as most of the session visualized through video. More time should be allocated for legislative frame work of OSH session. It would be more better for the training program if there were any checklist used Training venue, food and logistics support was very good with efficient manner. Need to show the equipment while conducting PPE session A little more concentration need to be imposed on technical issues Wash room facility should be improved and clean Legislative framework session can be conducted by the lawyer or expert. Key factors to ensure compliance session may be conducted with more information Handout should be distributed before starting the training program and provide soft copy after end of the training program for easy knowledge sharing Give more time in technical discussion session Enjoyed more as some of the information is new for me. Allocate more time for legislative framework of OSH session Training duration may be increased for proper learning and it may 03 days long BEF has taken good initiatives to create good relationship among the member organization with informative and knowledge sharing. Biological hazard and first aid session should be included in the program schedule Training materials was not sufficient and should be improved More trainer may be involved for attractive training session The training was excellent, meaningful and satisfied us Sitting arrangement should be changed and it may round table for interactive Thanks to BEF to give opportunity to attend such types of training program Report of Training on workplace safety and compliance Page # 6 of 15

7 07. Favorable side of the Training: Most of participant s maintained time as per training schedule. They attended the venue on time and continued according to time though it was rainy day. The course was designed based on the current demand of the industry Friendly relationship has built up between resource person and participants. Approved curriculum and manual followed in the Training program. Relevant resource person conducted the training program as he is involved in whole process. The training was participatory where the facilitators addressed all the raised questions by the participants. Most of the sessions live through question-answer and participants were enjoyed with learning by doing. 08. Limitation of the Training: Sometimes can t give more time for technical session due to maximum number of participants Participant s level of understanding was not similar due to job experience so that as few of them raised questions too much and some of was silent. Duration of training was not too long as expected by the participants demand. This was a 16 working hour session so it s a difficult task to provide all the information regarding HR issues. Some sessions discussion not meet the participants demand Participants demanded the soft copy of the training materials but we have limitation to do so. 09. Recommendations for further improvement: It would be more better for the training program and we could know lots of different ideas, knowledge & views if may arrange two or more facilitators Duration of the training may increase and it may 03 days long. Legislative framework of OSH session need to be conducted by the lawyer Need to organize refreshers course with the same participants after six month Try to arrange the training program for 25 to 30 participants for each batch, so that resource person can easily applied participatory training methodology Soft copy materials may be provide to the participants after end of the training 10. Conclusion: The training was conducted by maintaining all process and documentation. The resource person worked hard to make the training meaningful. As per plan we have successfully conducted the training in time. It was conducted for 52 (Fifty two) participants from 17 different companies. During training, everybody-participants & resource person were shared their knowledge with each other. Last of all, it may hope that they will do better in their day to day activity by using learning from training. To meet the objectives BEF supplied all the necessary logistics and support as well. This was a participatory Training and participants played significant role and enjoy all the learning. Thanks to all participants those are actively participate in every session. Participants expressed their positive feedback while reaction & learning evaluation. Resource person tried to explain all the content as much as easier. At the end, it is mentionable that, the training was fulfilled the objectives and participants were learn from it.
