Houston Chapter, SMRP 9 th Annual Symposium The Houston Chapter of the Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals (HCSMRP) encourages you to make a presentation, or serve as a panelist at the Maintenance and Reliability Symposium (MaRS) The 9th Annual Symposium is taking place August 12 th through the 14 th, 2015 at Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX. Presentations will be on August 13 th. There will be a golf tournament on August 12 th. Three panel discussions will be conducted on the morning of August 14 th with a Workshop being offered on August 15 th. Last year the Symposium was very well attended with over 300 participants! The HCSMRP Symposium is one of the premier pure maintenance and reliability conferences giving presenters the perfect platform among industry peers in the Houston area. All papers and presentations will be published in the symposium proceedings. CRITERIA: The HCSMRP Symposium tracks are based on the SMRP Body of Knowledge, which contains five validated pillars of information essential to the success of maintenance and reliability professionals. This year, Houston Chapter is introducing a new track with a focus ISO and invites speakers to share their best practices with this newly publicized standard to the industry. The other four tracks are Manufacturing Process Reliability, Equipment Reliability, Work Management, Operations and Maintenance. A description of each track starts on page 3. The abstract should be no longer than 250 words Two (2) presenters per presentation will receive complimentary admission to the conference. Others can assist in the presentation; however, they will not receive complimentary admission. Presentations must be non-commercial. Practioners and non-practitioners are invited to submit a presentation. A subjective scoring method will be utilized to select the speakers. If you care to review of a copy of the scoring methodology please contact Michael.Eisenbise@bp.com, Past Chairman of SMRP, and he will provide you a copy. Moreover; if your presentation is not selected Michael.Eisenbise@bp.com will provide you a copy of the final scoring sheet with your score compared to the score of others. Abstract submissions are due by May 1 st, Notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 15 th, HCSMRP reserves the right to assign submissions to the respective BoK pillar. All of the required information must be provided for your submission to be considered. If you are selected to make a presentation at MaRS, you will be required to sign a release form that will allow the Houston Chapter of SMRP to publish your presentation in an electronic media format to be distributed to symposium attendees. MaRS 2015 Track Descriptions The HCSMRP Annual Symposium Tracks are based on the SMRP Body of Knowledge (BoK). The SMRP Body of Knowledge contains five validated pillars of information essential to the success of maintenance and reliability professionals. These five pillars are Business Management, Manufacturing Process Reliability, Equipment Reliability, Organization and Leadership, and Work Management. This year Business Management; and Organization and Leadership will be replaced by ISO as ISO deals with these subjects. Below are the key elements of the subjects of each MaRS 2015 Track. The complete SMRP Guide to Maintenance and Reliability Body of Knowledge is available to purchase on the SMRP web site (Note: it is not necessary to purchase the SMRP Guide to submit an abstract). 3 Track #1 ISO ISO is an international standard covering management of physical assets. Initially a Publicly Available Specification (PAS 55) published by the British Standards Institution in 2004, the ISO series of Asset Management standards was launched in January ISO is based on PAS 55. PAS 55 was originally produced in 2004 by a number of organizations under the leadership of the Institute of Asset Management. It then underwent a substantial revision with 50 participating organizations from 15 industry sectors in 10 countries. PAS 55:2008 (available in both English and Spanish versions) was released in Dec 2008 along with a toolkit for self-assessment against the specification.[3] The PAS gave guidance and a 28-point requirements checklist of good practices in physical asset management; typically this was relevant to gas, electricity and water utilities, road, air and rail transport systems, public facilities, process, manufacturing and natural resource industries. It was equally applicable to public and private sector, regulated or non-regulated environments. ISO is a global standard that has the potential to be as significant as ISO 9000 and ISO Track #2 - Manufacturing Process Reliability (A SMRP Pillar) This subject area relates maintenance and reliability activities to the manufacturing process of the organization to ensure that maintenance and reliability activities improve the manufacturing process. Understand the applicable processes (document process flow, understand process parameters, understand quality specifications, etc.) Apply process improvement techniques (identify production losses; establish continuous improvement process, etc.) Manage effects of change to processes and equipment (establish change protocol, update documentation and procedures, etc.) Maintain processes in accordance with applicable standards and regulations (understand industry standards, understand regulatory requirements, ensure compliance, etc.) MaRS 2015 Page 3 of 5

4 Track #3 - Equipment Reliability (A SMRP Pillar) This subject area describes two kinds of activities that apply to the equipment and processes for which the maintenance and reliability professional is accountable. First are those activities used to assess the current capabilities of the equipment and processes in terms of their reliability, availability, maintainability, and criticality. Second are the activities used to select and apply the most appropriate maintenance practices, so that the equipment and processes continue to deliver their intended capabilities in the safest and most cost-effective manner. Determine equipment reliability expectations (identify reliability goals, identify process expectations, etc.) Evaluate equipment reliability and identify improvement opportunities (measure and track performance, determine best demonstrated performance, analyze gaps, etc.) Establish a strategic plan to assure reliability of existing equipment (identify appropriate analysis techniques, develop maintenance strategy and tactics, etc.) Establish a strategic plan to assure reliability of new equipment (establish reliability specifications and acceptance criteria, obtain complete documentation, etc.) Cost-justify selected plans for implementation (conduct cost-benefit analysis, communicate benefits, obtain approval, etc.) Implement selected plans to assure equipment reliability (apply reliability strategies, establish organizational structure, provide resources, etc.) Review reliability of equipment and adjust reliability strategy (assess key performance indicators, analyze deviations, identify relevant best practices, implement continuous improvement, etc.) Track #4 - Work Management (A SMRP Pillar) This subject area focuses on the skills used to get the maintenance and reliability work done. It includes scheduling and planning activities, quality assurance of maintenance activities, stores and inventory management. Identify, validate, and approve work (establish work identification processes, select and approve viable work, etc.) Prioritize work (develop and implement formal prioritization system, etc.) Define work (develop job package including scope, procedures, references, materials, tools, testing, etc.) Schedule work (develops scheduling process, produce work schedules, balance resources, monitor backlog, manage break-in work, coordinate equipment access, etc.) Execute work (manage labor, material, and services; control productivity, ensure HSE compliance, etc.) Document work (create post-work documentation process, record failure events, etc.) Analyze work and follow-up (compare actual work with plan, identify variances, etc.) Measure work management performance (establish performance indicators, report schedule compliance and rework, etc.) Plan and execute projects (define scope, estimate project and life cycle costs, apply critical path methods, track progress, coordinate staffing, etc.) Use information technologies effectively (leverage capabilities of data historian, process control systems, condition monitoring software, EAM/CMMS, etc.) Manage resources and materials (control materials inventory, manage spares and equipment, establish MRO procurement process, manage contractors, etc.) MaRS 2015 Page 4 of 5

5 Track #5 Operations and Maintenance (Not a SMRP Body of Knowledge Pillar) Identify methodologies utilized to encourage Operation and Maintenance to work together to improve the reliability/availability of assets. Develop organizations/organizational structures that promote maintenance and operations personnel working together as partners Deploy autonomous maintenance in union and non-union environments Leverage cross training of maintenance and operational employees e.g. operational employees obtaining CMRP certification and maintenance employees versed in the operation Of assets. Panelists and Panel Discussions Each year, at MaRS, there are three panel discussions composed of 4 panelists. Panelists are considered leaders in their field. In the past panelists have consisted of VP s from fortune 10 companies, well published authors, etc. The panel topics for this year s conference are as follows; 1. How to best engage union represented employees in a reliability/availability improvement effort. 2. Best practices involved in implementing ISO Best practices utilized to transfer information from those retiring to their replacements.
