2 How can we improve people-related decision making? Over the past decade the responsibilities of the HR function have changed significantly: the HR professional now has its seat at the executive table and is in charge of solving complex organizational challenges. At the same time, traditional models and new cutting edge solutions often fail to deliver on what they promise. This leaves the HR professional with a profound challenge: how can we stay away from fads and quick fixes and instead use valid and reliable evidence to support the HR function? In response to this problem the idea of evidence-based HR has evolved, with the goal of improving the quality of people-related decision making by using critically evaluated evidence from multiple sources, such as organizational data, professional expertise, and the scientific research literature. While this sounds sensible and straightforward, gathering, understanding and using evidence is challenging in many ways and requires a set of specific skills.

3 Course Design Theory The course uses a blended learning approach that integrates interactive classroom sessions, e-learning modules and coaching (during and after the 3-day course). Starting point are concrete issues and challenges typically encountered by HR professionals. Practice You ll perform a hands-on assignment to conduct a concise assessment of what is known (and not known) in the scientific literature about an issue relevant to your own organization. You ll present your case on the third day of the course.

4 Recommended Audience Relevant to any HR or business leader The program is directly relevant to any HR or business leader who would like to improve the quality and outcome of his/her decision-making and gain evidence-based insights into topics relevant to HR. Although many of the examples provided in the course will focus on HR, the principles of evidence-based practice apply equally to all areas of management and leadership. The number of participants is limited to 12, as we aim to maximize the level of interaction.

5 Program Pre-course session + 3 day course (28/09, 29/09, 12/10) + post-course sessions PRE-COURSE SESSION The pre-course session concerns an e-learning module that can be completed online in your own time. In this module, the basic principles of evidence-based management are discussed (what it is, why we need it, what counts as evidence, what sources of evidence should be considered, etc.) and practical examples are provided. DAY EVIDENCE-BASED SKILLS (as from 10AM) Asking critical questions and surfacing assumptions Identifying cognitive errors, appraising professional judgment Acquiring evidence from experienced professionals and stakeholders Acquiring and appraising research findings Searching in research databases DINNER (optional) Thagaste

6 DAY 2 EVIDENCE-BASED INSIGHTS (as from 9AM) Performance management Talent management, recruitment and selection, job crafting Motivation, engagement, incentives, reward, idiosyncratic deals Practical assignment DAY 3 PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER (as from 9AM) Presentation of your practical assignment Case exercises Coaching: Applying the learned principles to an issue/problem relevant to your own organization Drawing up an action plan to implement the learned principles into your organization POST-COURSE SESSIONS The post-course sessions concern online (small group) gatherings in which you will be coached and supported to deploy your action plan.

7 Instructors This course will be facilitated by 4 world renowned experts: PROF. ROB Rob Briner is professor of Organizational Psychology at Queen Mary University and the scientific director of the Center for Evidence-Based Management. Rob Briner was ranked Most Influential UK Thinker in the HR Most Influential list. His main research interests for over 25 years focusses on the reciprocal links between work conditions, psychological well-being and various behaviors (e.g. engagement, job crafting). PROF. FREDERIK Frederik Anseel is professor in Work & Organizational Psychology and Behavioral Economics at Ghent University. The people make the place is the lens through which he studies and consults with companies. As the co-founder of The VIGOR Unit, he built a team of scientist-practitioners who support organizations in evidence-based decision-making. In 2017, he was elected as President of the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology.

8 PROF. DENISE Denise Rousseau is professor of Organizational Behavior and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University s Heinz College and the Tepper School of Business. She was the President of the Academy of Management and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organizational Behavior. Rousseau s work in the field centers upon evidence-based management and workers impact: human resource strategies, changing the psychological contract in employment, and the effects of organizational culture on performance. DR. ERIC Eric Barends is the managing director of the Center for Evidence-Based Management. He has twenty years of management experience. He advises and coaches large and medium sized companies on evidence-based decision-making. In addition, he runs training courses on this topic and serves as a visiting lecturer at several universities and business schools such as Carnegie Mellon University, New York University and the Amsterdam School of Management.
