1 THIS PROGRAMME IS RECOGNISED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH (DOSH) MALAYSIA CLAIMABLE UNDER HRDF FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH OFFICERS: 15 CEP CREDIT POINTS (REF: JKKP IS 127/438/4/1229) Free of Ergonomics Hazards To Achieve Better Work Efficiency and Effectiveness ERGONOMICS ASSESSSMENT AT WORKPLACE COURSE OVERVIEW The adoption of ergonomics practices at the workplace can contribute to a higher level of performance in productivity. How can the adoption of ergonomics translate into cost savings for the employer? When workers are in good health, naturally there will be less medical expenditure by the latter. At the workplace, if several workers are to be on emergency leave on a particular day, there will be a shortage of workers which, in turn, affects productivity. Besides, work place accidents, bodily discomfort, pain and stress to workers are both medical costs to employers and disruptions to production targets. The employer could also risk been sued for civil negligence or prosecuted in the Court to face punishment for failure to provide a safe working environment. This course provides a structured approach to ergonomics risk assessment of such workplace hazards (in line with OSHA 1994 and good industrial practices) and subsequent steps for preventive recurrence. COURSE OBJECTIVE Describe the principle of ergonomics and ergonomics assessment. Define the hazards and risk management principles. Apply the requirement contained in the Section 15 and Section 24 respectively of OSHA Perform step-by-step methodologies of ergonomics risk assessment. Appreciate the principle requirement of liability insurance, recording and ergonomics statistic. TOPIC COVERED Topic 1: Statistical evidence regarding issues about workers injuries and accident. Topic 2: Evidence about workers body discomfort and bodily pain. Topic 3: What is ergonomics and its functions as indicated in OSHA Topic 4: Step by step process for completing ergonomics assessment. Topic 5: Measuring and evaluating data gathered during ergonomics assessment. Topic 6: Evaluating and implementing effective counter measures to ergonomics issues. KEY BENEFITS PROACTIVE and pre-emptive prevention: Finding the causes of ergonomics risks and taking steps to control or eliminate it can help prevent bodily pains and serious accidents from happening in the future. 3 QUICK NOTE ABOUT ERGONOMICS AT WORKPLACE 1. What is Ergonomics Mean? 2. How can ergonomics and human factors improve Ergonomics is a science concerned with the fit health and safety? between people and their work. Reduce the potential for injury and ill health such as Ergonomics aims to make sure that tasks, equipment, information and the environment fit each worker. aches, pains and damage to the wrists, shoulders and back, noise-induced hearing loss and work-related asthma. Reduce the potential for accidents; if you don t follow ergonomics principles, there may be serious consequences for people and whole organisations. Many well-known accidents might have been prevented if ergonomics and human factors had been considered in designing people s jobs and the systems they worked 3. Why Ergonomic Need at Workplace? Adopting an ergonomics and human factors approach can:- Save money in the long term by avoiding costly accidents, reducing injuries, reducing sickness Reduce absence. Improving quality and productivity. in. 4. What kind of workplace problems can ergonomics and human factors solve? a. Design of tasks Work demands are too high or too low. The employee has little say in how they organise their work. Badly designed machinery guards (awkward to use or requiring additional effort) slow down the work. Conflicting demands, eg high productivity and quality. These problems can lead to employees failing to follow procedures or removing guards, causing accidents, injury an d ill health. b. Manual handling The load is too heavy and/or bulky, placing unreasonable demands on the person. The load has to be lifted from the floor and/or above the shoulders. The job involves frequent repetitive lifting. The job requires awkward postures, such as bending or twisting. The load can t be gripped properly. The job is performed on uneven, wet, or sloping floor surfaces. The job is performed under time pressures and doesn t include enough rest breaks. These problems may lead to physical injuries, such as low back pain or injury to the arms, hands, or fingers. They may also contribute to the risk of slips, trips, and falls. c. Workstation layout Items that are used frequently are out of convenient reach. Inadequate space under work surface for legs. Work surface height inappropriate for the tasks causing awkward and uncomfortable postures. Lighting inadequate causing eyestrain when inspecting detail on work items. Chair not properly adjusted to fit the person and workstation. d.managing the working day Not enough recovery time between shifts. Poor scheduling of shifts. Juggling shifts with domestic responsibilities. Employees working excessive overtime. How can I check if there are ergonomics problems? By attending training programme for Ergonomics Assessment At Workplace, You will understand how to identify the hazards.
