1 V o l. 7 2 N o. 9 Shuttlecock F e b r u a r y M a n h a t t a n B e a c h B a d m i n t o n C l u b L e i g h N o d a We recently had the first Super Bowl Party at the Club. We had temporarily set up the new 55 inch LCD so that everyone could watch the game, enjoy the food and refreshment. We had a great turnout and we plan to do this again! (Maybe next year President@MBBadmintonClub.com Presidentially Speaking... we will have a local team to root for?) Thanks to Tammy and her crew for putting the party on and congratulations to the Green Bay Packers on winning. The physical re-plastering work of the pool has been completed and it is now time for the plaster to cure. As a result, the pool is closed at least through February as the plaster is still soft, can be damaged very easily, and the water chemistry is adjusted to facilitate the curing. When the pool people advise that the curing is complete, we will notify everyone with an e-blast specifying when the pool will be open. The Board has been busy moving projects forward. Lori is working the remodeling of the women s bathroom with the challenge of City requirements and budget. In Noel s report, he discusses moving forward with a pilot program to automate quarterly bill paying and using online invoicing based on the positive reception at the general meeting. In November, we reported that a 501(c)3 application for the MBBC Junior Players Program was made. We have received approval from the IRS and setting up the procedures under which it will operate under the Club umbrella led by Chunming. A reminder your workday obligations must be complete by the end of May. Please review your plans to complete your workday obligations such that you avoid workday fines. Additionally, each member must attend at least one of the two membership meetings each Club Year to be credited with a proxy for the other meeting. If you did not attend the November meeting, circle your calendar to attend the May 21 Annual Meeting to avoid being charge meeting fines. Peter Steinbroner is working to fill out the next Board. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please contact Peter to be considered for serving.

3 Treasurer s Report Noel Chun Treasurer@MBBadmintonClub.com I have been working with Leigh and the Board to work to make our accounting more efficient and to reduce our costs. We now have an internet-based accounting system that unifies the QuickBooks accounting, bill paying and record-keeping in one place. This increases the efficiency of our work and is environmentally friendly as it cuts down on paper and waste. Our plan going forward is to move to quarterly electronic payment of dues. If we do this, it will cut down the work and expense by more than half and save thousands of dollars per year for the club. This money can then be used to make the club and its programming better for everyone. We are in the process of drafting an opt-in form that will be ed to all of the membership soon. It will also be posted in the 'forms' section of the MBBC website. This form will allow you to sign up to have quarterly electronic payment of your MBBC dues from your checking account. User fees and penalties will be invoiced separately on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. If you sign up, this system will give you one less thing to do (remembering to write a check and mail it each month!!!). It will help us phase out the 'snail mail' invoicing and processing which costs about 5-6% of collected dues each month. It also decreases our carbon footprint which is better for our beach environment. We plan to start enrollment soon. When we have enrollees for quarterly payment, we will launch the pilot program to demonstrate its effectiveness and work out any bugs. The bank debit program involves some fees for the club, but it is far less expensive than the system we currently use. The database of account information is maintained on the Union Bank secure website. The board is now working to draft proposed bylaws changes that will make all these changes compliant with our charter and will be presented at the May meeting of the membership. If you have any questions regarding this proposal, please send them directly to me at: treasurer@mbbadmintonclub.com. Please remember that the new form for members requesting reimbursement from the MBBC is available on the website here. All future requests for reimbursement should be submitted using this form by or fax to: mbbc@bill.com or (310) When the new quarterly dues payment enrollment form is ready it will also be posted on the MBBC website. 3
