It will be updated and amended from time to time in accordance with the changing needs of the University and the requirements of the job. PURPOSE OF ROLE: The role of NRI s IT Systems Developer will be to work in a small team to develop and maintain NRI s business systems. These systems are bespoke to NRI and are critical for the effective operation of NRI s research and consultancy activities. In addition to this the successful candidate will form part of the communications team, assisting in the dissemination and management of multimedia content. To meet the requirements of daily systems management the successful candidate will have strong programming/scripting skills in PHP, Perl and JavaScript along with experience in UNIX/LINUX operating system administration and configuration. The role holder will be in regular communication with approx. 80 staff members and 50 PhD students and should identify technical support requirements and communicate these to central University IT services. Opportunities also exist for the post holder to be involved in developing IT solutions tailored to the needs of NRI research projects both in the UK and worldwide. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Team Specific: Ongoing Oversee development of NRI s IT Systems and ensure that they remain fit for purpose in accordance with University of Greenwich strategies and policies. Operate, administer and configure approximately 7 UNIX/LINUX servers. Maintain and modernise NRI s in-house bespoke business systems (Quality Management System, Intranet, Project Database, Invoicing System, Business Opportunities Database, Travel Database, Staff Database). Extract and manipulate sensitive personal and commercial information with due regard to Data Protection Legislation. Manage and optimise databases. Provide training and guidance for staff and students in the use of bespoke in-house systems. 1

2 Specific Develop and maintain mobile applications for key elements of corporate systems (e.g. mobile management of timesheets). Develop and maintain a dynamic system of managing in-house data (e.g. allowing the extraction of certain personal information from internal systems for use across a range of platforms). Develop and maintain new NRI Intranet platform supporting NRI research and consultancy activities e.g. project bidding. Generic Provide support to users of NRI s corporate systems. Signpost NRI staff to central IT support services provided by ILS. Provide IT consultancy support to external NRI projects as defined by the project terms of reference. Managing Self Proactively identify opportunities for improving IT services across the Institute. Continuous improvement in knowledge of administrative systems and University working policy. Additional Requirements: The post holder will be required to occasionally work outside normal office hours to meet the operational needs of the service. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Desirable Experience Experience Experience of managing multiple complex tasks concurrently and working to tight deadlines. Experience of configuring and maintaining Joomla CMS. Experience of process development to improve end user experience. Ability to assess business implications of a problem to make an informed decision when commissioning and prioritising work. Experience of supporting staff and facing multiple deadlines in a customer-oriented environment. Experience of the Higher Education Sector and/or a research environment. Skills A high level OO programming language such as Java together with scripting languages such as PHP, Python and/or JavaScript. SQL scripting. UNIX/LINUX administration and configuration. Troubleshooting and fault finding experience in a UNIX/LINUX environment. Knowledge of Apache web server. Constructing and maintaining web pages that conform to W3C standards. Excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to communicate knowledge to colleagues including documenting work. Ability to manage own time and work as a team.
