5 Confederation of Indian Industry To: Members and Select Non-Members, 3rd September 2012 MASTER-CLASS by Richard J. Schonberger Title Manufacturing Best Practices: Surviving and Thriving in a Hyper-Competitive World Thursday, 1 November hours Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore CII Institute of Quality is pleased to announce a half-a-day Master Class on Manufacturing Best Practices: Surviving and Thriving in a Hyper-Competitive World scheduled on 1st November 2012 at Vivanta by Taj, Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore by Richard Schonberger, Ph.D., is president of Schonberger & Associates of Seattle, providing seminars and advisory services to industrial and service organizations worldwide (brief profile attached). Objective The Master class focuses on best practices in manufacturing, extending downstream in distribution to retailing and to customers. The inputs are drawn from his leanness database on global trends, in continuous process improvement, driven by such methodologies as Lean and Six Sigma. Participation in this programme would provide opportunity, for senior managers and professionals in manufacturing and downstream functions, to learn from experience- and research-based best practices for thriving in a hyper-competitive world. The concepts and methodologies presented emphasize customer-focused outcomes that require changes in conventional practices in Production engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Human Resource Management, Performance management, Marketing and Sales, Accounting etc. Largely, these best practices require simplification not elaboration, and cost-saving rather than capital-intensive solutions. Master class will cover: Driving process improvement where it s been neglected and its untapped potential is significantly high in the clogged logistics channels. Simplification through de-proliferation of losers that tie up capacity (money-losing part numbers, products, suppliers, even customers). Modifying unsound policies/ constraints that lock-up productive equipment/ resources to enable quick and small-lot response. Gravitating towards efficient and effective performance management practices that are light-handed and intensive at low levels. Chain, Process Improvement Programmes etc. will find the inputs quite stimulating and rewarding to initiate improvement actions in their organisations on return. Takeaways Attending the Master Class would enable the delegates to gain a broader understanding/ perspective on how to unify the different activities/processes to effectively address the cause of serving the customer of the enterprise. Related to that, one develops a deeper understanding of the impediments in the way of continuous process improvement, and how to deal with them. Fee Per Participant Rupees 22,472/- Rupees 28,090/- US $ 500 Members are requested to make use of this unique MASTER CLASS and also nominate their colleagues to attend the same. 15 Business Excellence - A Step by Step Implementation Approach By Shivakumar KR, Senior Counsellor- Business Excellence Excellence pervades success. In business, Excellence means the ability to replicate success time and again thereby achieving sustainable success. This repeatable success is to be attributed to the ability of the Organization to show consistent, predictable and comprehensive success amongst all its stakeholders such as Customers, People, Investors, society, interested parties etc across relevant parameters. This would also mean that the Organization sets new heights in its performance and constantly monitors and betters competition. How do Organizations do this? While there are various ways of doing this, The 9 Box EFQM Excellence model with its RADAR offers a systematic way of moving towards excellence which ensures maturity of the processes and results so that they can be sustained over time. One of the many proven way is as listed below. Develop the Vision statement in line with its stated Mission which articulates its stated purpose or line of business. Develop and agree on a strategy linked to its envisioned f uture. Arrive at the set of balanced results across its stakeholders for now and the future considering the strategy as well as needs and expectations of stakeholders. Identify the critical success factors needed to succeed after an environmental scan and its own competencies based on the markets it operates. Prepare a process map encompassing all processes of the Organization. Identify the Key processes from the map linking the critical success factors leading to the achievement of its Strategic Objectives. Develop indicators for monitoring the performance of the Key Processes. Drive / Develop initiatives which focus on the delivery, improvement of the Key Processes. While the Key processes are important to deliver the strategy and the intended objectives, adequate focus also needs to be given to the Support processes which aid in the achievement of the objectives. Support processes include IT, Technology, Finance, supply chain partners, resources such as material, equipment, other assets and not to forget knowledge management. Needless to say, People are central to driving these and can also be deemed as resources that should be trained, competent and are to be taken care of by involving, empowering and also caring for them. Steering a company towards Excellence also requires a structure with a prime mover in the Organization preferably the CEO. This structure can vary depending on the complexity, culture, and dynamics of the Organization. CII- IQ offers support to Organizations wanting to implement this model by way of Training, Consulting, Assessments of various types and also has an Award scheme which helps Organizations assesses their pace of progress by way of recognition at different levels.
