1 The Corporation of The Township of South Glengarry Job Description Position Title: Economic Development & Tourism Promotions Coordinator Group: Non Union Supervisor: General Manager of Community Services Department: Community Services Prepared By: Human Resources Advisor Approved: March 6, 2017 Revised: January 29, 2018 Job Function: Reporting to the General Manager of Community Services, the Economic Development & Tourism Promotions Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the Township s community and economic development and promotional initiatives by; identifying and promoting community and economic development opportunities, applying for funding assistance for community and economic development activities and programs, assisting and encouraging local organizations, businesses and individuals with developing business plans, developing and implementing promotional strategies for the Township and promoting the community in order to expand community and economic development opportunities. Skills and Qualifications: 1. University degree or college diploma in Marketing/Promotions, Community/ Economic Development, Business Administration and/or combined with related financial experience. Equivalencies will be considered. 2. Demonstrated working knowledge in Community and Economic Development and Page 1 of 6
2 marketing/promotions theories and practices. Able to identify local, regional and territorial potential economic development and opportunities. An understanding of relevant municipal legislation, policies and procedures. 3. Has demonstrated experience with the preparation of media releases, newspaper articles, speeches and presentations. 4. Excellent internal and external customer service skills. Advanced oral and written communication skills, ability to establish and maintain proactive relationships with managers, employees, the public and outside agencies with diplomacy, respect and confidentiality. 5. Intermediate skills in word processing. Direction Received/Independent Action: 6. Works independently within regulatory and Township policy guidelines. 7. Implements Community and Economic Development and marketing promotional strategies by creating and implementing the instruments necessary to deliver the Township s promotional message(s) (e.g. brochures, advertisements, website maintenance etc.) and undertakes a broad spectrum of economic development projects. 8. Performance is monitored by the General Manager of Community Services through the Township s Performance Management Program. Working Relationships: Routine: 9. General Manager of Community Services: Direct reporting relationship. 10. Mayor/Council and members of Local Boards: Reports on the progress of Community and Economic Development and marketing/promotions strategies. 11. General Public including residents and ratepayers: Provides information and advice to entrepreneurs, businesses and investors on community and economic development issues. Provides information and updates to the general public regarding municipal initiatives and issues. Page 2 of 6
3 12. Management Team: Provides recommendations on community and economic development opportunities. Maximizes the Township s utilization of modern communication technologies. 13. Media: Assists the Clerk in responding to requests for information from the media regarding Community and Economic Development and marketing and promotional issues, monitors Community and Economic Development issues at the local, provincial and national level affecting the Township. Exchanges information or disseminate corporate information via the appropriate media to relevant stakeholders. Non-Routine Contacts: 14. Other Municipalities: Obtains and exchanges information and ideas with other municipalities regarding community and economic development, marketing and promotional strategies. Duties and Responsibilities: 15. Researches and prepares draft media releases, newspaper articles, speeches and presentations as required and issues approved media releases and field requests and queries from local media. Assesses nature of media requests and may provide clarification with regard to decisions and policies approved by Council. Coordinates media interviews and monitors and tracks media coverage to ensure that media content and contact information is accurate, current and accessible. 16. Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned by the General Manager of Community Services, in accordance with Departmental or corporate objectives. 17. Facilitates community and economic development and marketing and promotional planning in order to identify and establish community and economic development opportunities. 18. Develops and maintains an inventory of available lands for development or occupancy. Page 3 of 6
4 19. Researches and provides recommendations on community and economic development and promotional opportunities. 20. Works collaboratively with the United Counties of SDG to ensure that economic profiles of the Township and region are current and accurate. 21. Responds to general inquiries for non residential properties that pertain to land use planning and capabilities and/or assists businesses in understanding land use planning requirements and compliance. 22. Acts as a liaison between local organizations, businesses and individuals and representatives of government, business and industry concerning Community and Economic Development and marketing and promotional development. 23. Develops partnerships within the community to build and promote opportunities. 24. Assists local organizations, businesses and individuals to take advantage of Community Economic Development and marketing and promotional development opportunities and major projects. 25. Researches private and public sector funding assistance opportunities. 26. Assists the Clerk with the development and maintenance of the Township website and social media pages. 27. Liaises with industry and government representatives to promote local businesses and individuals. 28. Provide support in processing land use planning applications when requested. 29. When in State of Emergency, acts as the Alternate Community Emergency Coordinator (CEMC) in the absence of the Primary CEMC. Impact of Errors: 30. May cause deterioration in relations affecting the organization s image. Potential for minor to major financial cost to organization. For example, failure in the following areas could happen: Errors in analysis, judgement and in rendering advice could lead to actions resulting in embarrassment, unfavourable public reactions that could seriously impair services to the public and residents and possibly result in litigation and legal costs. 5 Not dealing with the public tactfully could result in reduced levels of cooperation with and confidence from the public. Physical and Sensory Demands: 31. Muscular and sensory strain combined with sensory exertion is required for moderate periods while working at a personal computer station. 32. Light physical strength to move/transfer files of weight not usually more than ten (10) pounds. 33. Assist occasionally in the physical setup and teardowns of Township sponsored events (e.g. Annual Business and Award Gala, Volunteer Appreciation etc.). Mental Demands: 34. Review of correspondence and preparation of formal documents performed routinely for prolonged periods with regular continuous requirements to complete priority items. 35. Occasional time factors may affect work pace and results in determining priority tasks and duties in meeting tight timelines. (e.g. calls and inquiries and visits cause occasional interruptions or disruptions including exposure to public criticism while providing services to customers.) 36. Regular requirements for presentation of staff reports or other public presentations at both small and large public meetings/events/training. Working Conditions: Hours of Work: 37. Required to work a 7 hour day during normal business hours Monday to Friday. Overtime: 38. Overtime is compensated as per Township Policy. Work Environment: 39. Spends 70% to 90% of the average work year in private office within a single office building. Remaining time spent travelling outside of the work area to attend training sessions and meetings as required. Page 5 of 6
6 Hazards: 40. Usual hazards consist of slips, trips and falls or strains. Repetitive motion injuries from keyboard activities are also a hazard. Minor risk of illness or personal injury, not usually requiring medical attention but may require first aid for minor cuts. Page 6 of 6
