Cedar Island Volunteer Opportunities
Thank you for considering volunteer opportunities at Cedar Island Elementary School. This brochure contains information about several items more requests will come out as the year rolls along. If you think you may want to volunteer at school this year (even if none of THESE opportunities work for you), PLEASE complete a volunteer application (two pages) which you will find as a separate document and send it in. I need a new application from each volunteer every year, and both pages must be submitted. If you have more than one volunteer at your home, GREAT! Please copy the form, get another form from the Cedar Island Web Page or let me know and I ll get you an additional form. Thanks! Also, a list of important information about volunteering at Cedar Island can be found at the end of this document. Please take a minute to review. VOLUNTEER PROCEDURES In the main-office you will find a volunteer sign-in station complete with a netbook computer (thank you, PTO, for funding the computer!) and a basket of personalized name tags. EVERY time you come to the school to volunteer, be sure to: Sign in and out of Volunteer Computer. It just takes a couple of clicks (your name, your task, then sign in on the way in; your name, then sign out on the way out). Wear your nametag. Nametags are stored in the basket next to the Volunteer Computer. After October 1, nametags will be available ONLY for those people who have filled out a volunteer application (so please get yours in!). Until a nametag is made for you, please wear a Visitor badge (available in the office). THANK YOU for following these guidelines and procedures! Please remember: Contact Barb Lindsay, the Volunteer Coordinator, with any questions! Contact info: (763) NOTE I have a direct line!! lindsayb@district279.org Room 27 Special Note: If I send something home with your child for you, it will have a note attached featuring the PERSON WITH THE BALLOON. Watch for it!

Thank you and see you in school! General Programs District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) Job Description: Participate in the ISD 279 Parent Advisory Council this is a group, required in state statue and school board policy, whose primary function is to provide for the combined planning efforts of community and professional staff in curriculum planning and evaluation of the educational program. Time Requirement: Attend monthly meetings at the Educational Service Center. Meetings are scheduled to for 2 hours in the evening. Some follow-up work between meetings may be required as well. Qualifications: An interest in participating in group that impacts the education of students in the Osseo Area school district.
Work Bees Job Description: Work on projects for the staff that could include making charts or graphs, cutting out laminated items, making buttons, using the opaque machine, cutting, coloring, assembling bulletin board items, mounting and displaying student art work, etc. Time Requirement: Schedule a regular day to come in, or as projects arrive, you may be contacted to see if you are available to help. Signing up to be a Work Bee does not obligate you to do any particular project; it just provides a pool of volunteers to contact first when a project needs to be done. Some projects require the work to be done at school, but some of this type of work can be done at home. On the sign-up sheet, please indicate your preference for at-home or in-school projects (and whether or not you d like to come in on a regular basis). Qualifications: Like to help out in many different areas. Classroom Assistant Job Description: Assist teachers by doing clerical-type work or by working directly with the students in math, reading, spelling or creative writing. Time Requirement: Varies, depending on teacher, but generally an hour or two once every week or two. Lists of people interested in being classroom assistants will be given to the teachers. Qualifications: A willingness to help classroom teachers with tasks and/or work with students. NOTE: Some teachers only use classroom assistants on an occasional, as-needed basis. They will use the list generated from this item to fill those requests. Please indicate whether you would like to help only in your own child(ren) s room(s), or where ever needed. Media Center Book Shelver Job Description: Shelve books in the media center once a week. Time Requirement: Schedule a time to come in once a week to shelve books. Do what you can in an hour (longer if you REALLY like it!). Qualifications: Books need to be reshelved in alphabetic/number order. Do you like books? Do you like exercise? Then this might be the job for you! Shelving is a good workout for the brain as well as the body. Training is provided. Popcorn Parent Job Description: Make popcorn for 1-5 classrooms on an as-needed basis. Time Requirement: Volunteers for this opportunity are added to an list. You will receive notification when popcorn is ordered to see if you are available. Come in and help if you can! Qualifications: You will be trained on the popcorn machine, which is very easy to run.
Wednesday Envelopes Job Description: Come in on Wednesday mornings to collate packets of information and stuff envelopes. We currently have an experienced crew to work on this project but are looking people to serve as subs when needed. Time Requirements: Depends on the number of items each week half an hour to an hour or more first thing Wednesday morning. Qualifications: Ability to be on call to help with this job. Field Trips Job Description: Each grade level goes on at least one field trip during the school year. Each chaperone is responsible for 2 6 children while on the field trip. Volunteers who go on field trips must have a current year volunteer application on file, so please fill out the application and check this box if you would like to be considered as a chaperone! As field trips are scheduled, you will get more information from your child s teacher. The number of chaperones we are able to take is sometimes limited, so checking this box does not guarantee that you will be selected. Time Requirements: From 2 6 hours, depending on the field trip Qualifications: Willingness to spend a few hours helping students learn from and enjoy a special experience. Yearbook Photographer Job Description: Work with the volunteer coordinator to identify photo opportunities around the school. Take pictures about once a month at school during the school day and forward to the people putting the yearbook together. They always have a hard time getting candid shots to fill pages, and would love some help! Time Requirements: An hour or two each month during the school day and/or at school events. Qualifications: Basic photography skills. Special Skills Job Description: Occasionally, a request comes to the volunteer room which requires special skills (sewing, photography, etc). I d love to have a list of people to contact when these requests come in. Time Requirements: Depends on the request. Indicating that you have a special skill does not obligate you to any particular project it just puts you on a contact list. Qualifications: Willingness to share your special skill! General Volunteer Job Description: You may not see anything in this brochure that works for you, but are still interested in volunteering to help with future needs. Examples of these future needs are a number of
classroom parties for Kindergarten, the Valentine s Day Party, and Super Kid s Day and there will be other opportunities as well! We need to have an application from every volunteer each year so please return an application if you think you may volunteer for something this year. It really helps if we can get your application now rather than track you down to get it later!! Time Requirements: Varies depending on opportunity. Qualifications: An interest in supporting Cedar Island staff by volunteering to help. NOTE: A separate flyer will go home after the first of the year asking for volunteers for the Valentine s Day parties. PLEASE look for that flyer if you are interested in helping at that time. If you think you might be interested in this or any other volunteer opportunity that might arise through the year, please return the Volunteer Application now! Thank you for sharing your time and talents with Cedar Island students and staff!
