1 ~Cie~nce~ Fdir Pro~e~c~ Inf ormd~ion Dear Parents and Guardians, ~L ~`'"`R' ~`' ---. We are very excited to announce the upcoming Science Fair! Each child will be required to complete a Science Fair Project for the Science Fair and present it to the class. A science fair is an exciting event that encourages students to think like young. scientists. During the next few weeks your child will be designing a science project that uses the scientific method to solve a problem. We hope you agree that the educational benefits are numerous, as students develop skills in writirg, oral presentation, creative thinking, and problem solving. The packet your child has brought home today includes a list of ideas for possible projects as well as guidelines for completing a project. Please go through this paci~et and help your child select a project that will be interesting to your child and will be appropriate in terms of difficulty, gnd resources available. I ask that you encourage your child and monitor his/her progress along the way. Your support is key to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure e~,uity and promote student learning. It is important that your child wrestles with. problems and tries to solve them. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child's individual effort and design. Included in this packet is a grading rubric, assignment details, and due dates. Look over the packet carefully so you know how your"'child's science fair project will be graded. The science fair project does count for q grade in science. Complete Science Fair Project (display board, written report and presentation) is due ~,Y.. 1~ ZS~ ( ~.~ ~ a ~tc~,, ---~ ~~. _ ~ w ~
2 ~dmple. P~oJe.C~ Ic~e~ds~ All science fair experiments should start with a testable question. First find a topic that interests you. Then look at the questions within that topic area. A testable question for an experimental investigation needs to include changing one thing to see what the effect is on another thing that can be supported by observational and measurable evidence. You are not limited to these topics and questions, they are here to give you ideas and to get you started. A testable question is NOT a model or demonstration of how something works If you can answer your question or hypothesis with a yes or no, it is not a testable question. Topic: Force and Motion --Does the size of an object affect how fast it rolls down a ramp? --Do the size of the wheels on a car change how fast it rolls? Topic: Plants --Do plants grow better with tap water or distilled water? --Does the color of light affect the growth of plants? Topic: Magnetism --Does temperature have an effect on a magnet's strength? Topic: Properties of Matter --Does liquid have more mass after freezing? --Do white candles burn at a different rate than colored candle i Remember: Testable questions ask about objects, organisms, and events in the natural world. Testable questions can be answered through investigations that involve experiments or observations. Testable questions are answered by collecting and analyzing evidence that is measurable based on changing one thing at a time. Testable questions have a reasonable time frame. L
3 Whe~~e~ cdn I f Ind e~x~~d info~md~lo~~ There are a lot of places to go to find extra information. Read on for a list of resources. Your local library and school library: Libraries are still a fantastic tool to use and one that is often forgotten about. What's even better is they are free! Librarians have a true love for books and learning, if you ask for help you are sure to receive. Bookstores: If you don't mind spending money on a book consider buying one at a bookstore. They are full of great projects and will help you in writing it out. Although, f rom a teacher's point of view, they tend to take away the learning process for the student. If you choose to use one of these use it as a guide to help your child, not to give them the answers. Websites: Of course there is a lot of information online and it's mostly free. Most teachers don't mind students using the Internet as a tool, however they strongly encourage students using another source in addition, especially if the project requires research. Below are a few sites to get you started. ~,~. ~ ~~ ~~~ wv~~w.education.com/science-fair ai rcentra
