3 Importance of Effective Onboarding Numerous studies and research reports highlight the importance of effective onboarding. 4% of new employees leave a job after a disastrous first day and 22% of staff turnovers occur in the first 45 days of employment. These losses can add up, given estimates that losing an employee in the first year costs at least three times that employee s salary. Platforms help create a more comprehensive, personalized, and rapid onboarding experience so that new employees add greater value more quickly. Developing an onboarding agenda helped Google boost the productivity of its new hires by up to 15%. 90% of businesses believe that employees make their decision to stay within the first year of employment. The organizational costs of employee turnover are estimated to range between 100% and 300% of the replaced employee s salary. New employees who went through a structured onboarding program were 58 % more likely to be with the organization after three years. A study of 264 new employees published in the Academy of Management Journal found that the first 90 days of employment (often called the probationary period) is pivotal to building rapport with the company, management and coworkers. 3

4 Onboarding Practices and Trends Despite the widespread acceptance of the importance of onboarding, implementing a successful onboarding process remains a challenge. Only 32% of companies have a formal onboarding process. Best-in-class companies are 35% more likely to begin onboarding processes before day one. 22% of companies have no formal onboarding program. When support and direction were not offered, the inverse occurred, leading to unhappy and unproductive employees who didn t make it much further than four months. 4
