The Firefighter is the first level in a six (6) level Firefighter series and reports to the Fire Captain. Employees occupying positions of this class are responsible for the protection of life and property through the suppression and prevention of fires and in the response to emergency calls. Firefighters work closely with the local community to increase their level of public safety awareness by promoting fire safety, first aid education, and enforcing fire safety standards in public and commercial premises. May be required to work variable shifts. You MUST attach a copy of your Firefighter 1 and EMT Basic certification or higher, and proof of Associate's or Bachelor's Degree (if applicable) with your application in order to be considered to take the written test. Incentives available: EMT Advanced 2% or Intermediate 5% or Paramedic 9.5% HazMat Team Assignment: 3% Top step Paramedic Firefighter earn $ per month Excellent Benefits Package: (See Benefits Tab for more details.) 2 TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. This position: Participates in the practice of firefighting skills in organized drills, and enforces fire codes and other related laws; responds to hazardous material emergencies and performs mitigation activities Operates ground monitors and power-driven machinery, such as hydraulic and pneumatic rescue tools, etc. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance in: Administering emergency medical care/services Laying and connecting hose lines, operating nozzles and directing water streams Carrying, raising and climbing ladders Entering burning buildings for fire and rescue operations Using chemical extinguishers, various hand and power tools, and other equipment Mitigating the effects of natural disasters affecting public safety Ventilating buildings, performing salvage/overhaul operations, and clean-up Checking the fire scene for point of origin and source of ignitions Works as an integral part of a firefighting unit, utilizing procedures and techniques as prescribed by the Department Analyzes emergency situations quickly to detect natural gas leaks, mitigate traffic hazards, and detect signs of impending building collapse Performs pre-fire surveys, station tours, public relations and public education activities within the school system and civic groups Participates in the practice of firefighting skills in organized drills Responds to hazardous material emergencies and performs mitigation activities Uses good written and communication skills to write reports and communicate effectively with others Performs various cleaning and maintenance of stations, apparatus, equipment and grounds Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Fire Chief Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation Must have the ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities Performs other related projects and duties as assigned Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance Core Competencies: Individual Contributor: Incumbents should have a solid foundation of the following core competencies identified by the organization to be essential: Communicativeness - Effective performers recognize the essential value of continuous information exchange. 4 JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Requirements: EMT Basic certification Firefighter 1 certificate MUST be from NFPA, IFSAC, ProBoard, DPSST, or any state or nationally accredited certifying body (may NOT be from a college or technical school) No tobacco use on or off duty for duration of employment Minimum 18 years of age Must posses a high school diploma or GED Valid driver's license upon hire Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work listed above Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession Possession of licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment, such as:
