1 West Essex YMCA Counselor-In-Training Program Purpose and Philosophy The purpose of the Counselor-In-Training Program at West Essex Day Camps is to provide instruction through practical experience and hands-on learning to acquire skills that are essential in becoming an effective camp counselor. CIT s who commit to the training program will discover a lot about themselves and their leadership potential. CIT Responsibilities Being a camp counselor is a lot of fun and it s also a great responsibility. You must have a strong desire to work with children and learn all aspects of camp behind the scenes. The goal of our camps is to provide a safe and enriching environment for campers to participate in healthy, developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences. This must also be your reason for applying for the CIT position. The CIT program will focus on all aspects of leadership, teamwork, decision making and problem solving and guiding children s behavior, along with building a foundation of knowledge about our camp policies, procedures and programs. You ll meet each day with other CIT s to discuss your experience and ideas, and spend time working hands-on working alongside a counselor and a specific group of children. You will participate in all field trips, program activities, special classes, camp events, aquatics, and assisting camp staff. Your fee will cover all of your expenses, CIT training, trip fees, plus your camp T-shirt. Appropriate language and behavior will be expected at all times, as you will be representing the YMCA. Failure to adhere to all YMCA policies & procedures will result in forfeiting your status as a CIT without a refund. Once accepted as a CIT, candidates will be invited to an Orientation session to review responsibilities and expectations of our CITs and answer any questions that you may have. CIT Eligibility Qualifications Students entering 9 th or 10 th grades in the fall up to age 16. Two adult recommendations from someone other than family or friends who is familiar with your leadership abilities (i.e. club advisors, coaches, youth leaders, teachers, etc.) Please list the references on your application and have them complete the forms attached. Attend a minimum 4 weeks of Super Summer Day Camp (preferably including the first session) Previous camp experience preferred, but not necessary.
