2 About Us Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North is a non-profit organization working to break the cycle of poverty by building homes and promoting affordable homeownership, through the mobilization of volunteers and community partners. We work with people from all walks of life as we build simple, decent and affordable homes through volunteer labour, efficient management and donations of money and materials. Homes are sold to partner families at no profit they are financed with affordable, no interest mortgages, geared to the families financial circumstance. We want your help at Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North! In order to fulfill our mission, we depend on volunteers to donate their time and skills. Whether it s one day or a whole month, volunteering is the cornerstone of our organization but has many benefits for the volunteer giving back to the community, meeting new people, learning new skills and having fun! Being a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North means you are an essential part of what we do and how we do it. The obvious opportunity to volunteer is on one of our build sites throughout the region, but truly, this is only one of the many unique possibilities we offer our volunteers. There is plenty of work to do, and it s not just swinging a hammer! Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North has four main components: We are a construction company seeking to build affordable, environmentally friendly, quality homes. We are mortgage holders for our partner families. We work to meet the need for decent affordable housing in all of our partner communities. We operate retail stores selling new and gently used materials. Of course, there are so many ways you can make a difference! 3 How You Can Help As you ve probably already realized, there are plenty of ways to help at Habitat for Humanity for people with varied skills, qualifications and experience. To help find your area of interest we have broken down our main volunteering roles: ReStore Volunteer Warehouse Support test various electronic devices and appliances before they are brought on to the sales floor repair donations if required help lift and sort donations entering the ReStore warehouse price donations before they are brought on to the sales floor place priced donations onto the sales floor in their designated areas assist customers with lifting furniture and other items into their vehicles tidy and organize aisles Sales Associate operate the cash register answer the phone and fill out donation pick-up forms as requested direct customers on how to register for the monthly auction assist in setting up for the monthly auction, placing items in display cases, numbering items, preparing the auction book assist in the aftermath of the auction (calling the highest bidders over the phone, keeping a log of auction items that are sold) price items on the sales floor, place priced donations in appropriate sections Driver/ Salvage Crew help ReStore Truck Driver complete deliveries and pick-ups in your surrounding area on an as needed basis help lift furniture and various donations in and out of the ReStore Truck help bring out new donations onto the ReStore sales floor seek opportunities to obtain donations from various community members and businesses communicate with community members and businesses to arrange a pick up time and date assist in salvaging activity

4 Special Events & Office Support help plan and execute various fundraisers and special events happening within the ReStore. assist office staff with any administrative duties (e.g mailing letters, shredding files, sending s, making photocopies) make event posters and post on various social media outlets when an event or fundraiser is launched assist in recruiting and managing volunteers during special events and fundraisers help to build positive relationships with businesses and individuals within the community to encourage their partnership with Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North Volunteer With a Local Chapter Muskoka North Bay North Simcoe Orillia Lake Country Parry Sound Sudbury District South Almaguin Join your local Chapter and experience the feeling of making a true difference in your community. Chapter volunteers are essential and valued volunteers. Responsibilities attend monthly Chapter meetings select a role that best suits your professional and/ or personal interests, roles include Chair, Vice Chair, Faith Relations Representative, Volunteer Coordinator, Build Chair, Fundraising Chair, Family Selection Representative, Secretary, Site Acquisition Representative, and General Member complete tasks that are specific to your role communicate with Regional Office Staff to keep in the loop with any operational changes and programming communicate with the public on a frequent basis to spread the word about the organization and the projects that your Chapter takes on, be the face of the organization locally

5 Build Volunteer The number one reason most people volunteer with Habitat for Humanity is to swing a hammer or to learn how to swing one properly! In reality, there is a combination of volunteers and paid workers on site during a build. As a recognized builder, we are subject to all of the same standards as any builder in our community. We must have licensed trades people carpenters, plumbers, HVAC and electricians. We are the benefactors of assistance from trade unions, technical schools, colleges and a variety of builders who help by offering their staff and individual trades people who volunteer their expertise. Whether skilled or unskilled, many hands make light work! All we require is a willingness to learn, and determination, Our Site Supervisor and other experienced team members teach the necessary skills and dictate the build progress. Whatever your skill level you can make a contribution on site, even in a nonconstruction role. Enjoy the feeling of community that is the trademark of a Habitat for Humanity build project. Build volunteer responsibilities abide by safety rules at all times dress appropriately for your volunteer shift (Steel Toed Shoes, Hard Hat, Gloves) complete all tasks that the Site Supervisor assigns during your volunteer shift actively listen to Site Supervisor when he or she provides training for daily tasks clean up the build site (pick up garbage, build scraps, sticks, etc) organize the tools in the shed straighten and wipe down the chairs/ table wipe down the hardhats and spray them with Lysol brush off the boots and spray them with Lysol FAQ: What should I wear? Wear comfortable clothes that you don t mind getting dirty. Steel-toe boots and a hard-hat are non-negotiable and are available on the work site if you don t have your own. Gloves are recommended. What type of skills do I need? There is a very wide spectrum of skills needed to build the house; from scheduling volunteers to painting, hammering to driving, organizing food to photography. We would love to hear from you about what interests you and we can put you to work. What age do I have to be? Build volunteers have to be at least 16-years-old to participate. Are there bathrooms? Yes. Portable washrooms are available. What is the time commitment? Your time is greatly appreciated, whether it is one shift or one week of regular work. We can t build without volunteers!
