Bremerhaven Bremen The Heart of european trade Flows The division of labour is the key to the success of the twin ports. Bremerhaven handles container vessels, car carriers and reefer ships and accounts for roughly 80 per cent of the total freight handled by the port group. The port on the Weser estuary is also evolving into an important centre for the offshore wind energy indus try. 3 > Container VIA bremen Bremerhaven is one of the largest container ports in the world: with three container terminals, it is the central hub for intermodal import and export traffic, providing the link between road, rail or inland waterway transport and sea carriage. The completion of Container Terminal 4 (CT 4) in September 2008 added a further terminal for intermodal traffic to the range of services available in Bremerhaven. Efficient port of call for Mega-Carriers At the roughly five-kilometre long quay are 14 berths which can handle the world s largest container vessels. Preparations are already underway to deepen the navigation channel in the Outer Weser in order to improve the nautical conditions for the steadily growing number of these mega-vessels. Extensive operating and storage areas can accommodate 120,000 cars. In peak years, more than two million vehicles are handled here, and hundreds of thousands of vehicles undergo various procedures at the technical centres at the terminal every year. World-cLAss Automotive Hub High & heavy is another important segment in Bremerhaven and involves large, heavy and bulky vehicles or cargo loaded onto roll trailers at the terminal. The terminal s portfolio includes project cargo, iron and steel products, forest products and the transhipment of containers and heavy lift and can cope with unit weights of up to 550 tonnes. Industriehafen on the other side of the Weser can also provide valuable specialist know-how when it comes to handling break bulk and project cargo. 6 > Bulk CArgo VIA bremen Bulk cargo is divided into two categories: liquid and solid bulk. Liquid bulk includes cargoes such as oil, liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas, whereas dry bulk refers to cargoes such as ores, coal and minerals, as well as phosphate, cement and grain. Bremen has specialist terminals for all these goods at various sites in the port, such as Neustädter Hafen, Industriehafen and Holz- und Fabrikenhafen. 7 > wind Energy VIA bremen Water depths that can accommodate the largest seagoing vessels, excellent infrastructure and a powerful industrial cluster Bremerhaven can offer the wind energy industry the best possible conditions. A terminal for large-scale offshore wind energy components will be available on the banks of the Weser by The 25-hectare Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB) will handle the pre-assembly, storage and transhipment of wind turbines. The 500-metre long quay has enough room for two to three offshore jack-up vessels. Around 200 hectares of industrial sites are available for new companies and expansions. Flagship european Logistics Location BREMEN HIGH-BAY WAREHOUSE: The BLG high-bay warehouse is located very close to the freight village. Three 146-metre long, 70-metre wide and 42-metre high towers form one of the largest and most modern logistics complexes in Europe. The facility has a capacity of 200,000 pallets. Logistics centres: Two large logistics centres in the freight village handle dedicated logistics services for the automotive industry, supplying the required part assortments to overseas production plants.
