2 Policies and Procedures At UPMC, we have system policies and procedures addressing the following: Behavior-based Smoking prohibition at all UPMC-owned and UPMC-occupied facilities Conditional restrictions for wearing personal scents in medical service areas Environmental Anti-diesel idling compliance with regulation Clean construction to limit particulate emissions and along with diesel emissions

3 Policies and Procedures Indoor Air Quality Radiation exposure Respiratory protection for laboratories and isolation units Management of gases, including anesthetic gases Ventilation performance requirements for exposure control Surgeries Isolation units Morgues Labs Machine shops Print shops Interior renovations

4 As implied by policies and procedures, many actions occur with the intent to minimize or avoid air pollution Air quality actions require different approaches Prohibition supported with cessation strategies Curtailment to minimize unavoidable actions Engineered intervention controls to minimize prevent exposures Where procedures are publicly significant, often guidance or directive signage is posted

5 Publicly-significant actions include the following: Increasing urban campus green spaces to reduce urban heat cap impacts Smoke-free facilities Smoke-free work shifts Diesel-idling reduction at delivery docks and emergency departments entrances

6 Publicly-significant actions continued: Support for alternative fuel Electric vehicle chareg stations at most urban hospital campuses Alternative-fueled employee transportation Support and engagement of alternative transportation Bike racks at most hospital campuses and urban administrative facilities Bus stops at most urban hospital campuses and urban administrative facilities that have call centers, billing centers, data centers Participation in and promotion of CommuteInfo and Zip Car in Allegheny County Assist employees with accessing public transit fare payroll deduction

8 Strategic load bundling, delivery schedules, and optimized routes to reduce the amount trips from warehouses to hospitals Reviewing eco-driving options Curtailed participation in demand response on AQA Diesel-fueled back-up generators Use waste anesthetic gas (WAG) capture systems

9 Some divisions allow work from home Reduce travel to meetings through use of teleconference and videoconference technology Telemedicine (remote monitoring) Virtual visits (remote appointments)

10 Facility design changes: Use low no VOC paints Interior product with low off gassing or adhesive emissions Strategic use of windows for daylight Wall-reductions => increased open space to reduce heating-cooling challenges

11 Facility operation changes: Entrance doors to hospitals maintain positive pressure Set temperature during seasons to maintain optimal work conditions Asbestos assessment and remediation for all renovation projects Use of waste-heat eminating for areas with high quantity of machines to help heat adjacent areas Frequent monitoring of humidity and leaks

12 Some Challenges Consistent implementation of alternative transportation options across all contexts Implementing green-space in over-developed urban locations Leveraging smoke-free campus compliance among patients and visitors Leveraging diesel-idling reduction among paratransit shuttles during patient pickups and drop-offs Increasing participation of employees in ridesharing
