3 What is route optimisation? What is route optimisation? Tools to model most efficient journey from A to B. This is simple, low density routing that is commonly used in sat-nav, AA journey planner, Google maps etc. But what happens when we have thousands of service locations? This is high density route optimisation. Models the effect of resource on service locations to accurately model resource allocation required. Takes into consideration side of street servicing. Commonly used in Postal and Newspaper Industry, Meter reading, Inspection Services, Waste Collection Services.

4 Product Overview Integrated Skills Limited Environmental Consultants based in the UK with rights to distribute RouteSmart product in UK and Europe. OS Partners RouteSmart Technologies Inc US based company that develops vehicle route optimisation software technology including the RouteSmart for ArcGIS product. Two product updates per year constantly improving an already well established product. 30 years experience route optimisation is their only business. ESRI partners

5 RouteSmart for ArcGIS What is it? GIS based application that allows the user to model collection based services with no customer limitation. Why Use it? Balance workloads, reduce time and mileage, provide definitive resource requirements, model cross boundary working and different depot arrangements. Test what ifs and save money? Maps, networks (ITN), facilities and customer information represented in one application.

6 Introducing RouteSmart for ArcGIS An extension to ArcGIS developed over the last 25 years and used globally in several industry sectors. Layers of information represent real life features. Link between road network and customer Network tools to control vehicle flow. Outputs include various reports and vehicle travel paths.

7 Resource Management Why are logistics important? Fact - Vehicle activity is expensive and small percentage efficiency savings can create significant cashable savings. Fuel - Vehicles and equipment - Human resource MPG of vehicles RouteSmart projects can usually save at least 10%. Environment We should be using fossil fuels as effectively as possible. More efficient use of vehicles = less environmental impact. Completing the task correctly. Knowing exactly who does what / where / when. 8 RouteSmart in Newcastle Environmental Services - Waste Management First purchased to remodel waste management routes in 2008 due to resource restructure. (Blue Bin Project) Routes that in the past took many months / weeks to design take days / hours / minutes in RouteSmart. 215 new routes designed and implemented to provide approximately 400,000 collections every 10 days using 32 vehicles. Over 7 million collections per year. Identified the optimum configuration of waste management vehicle routes in terms of financial cost and carbon footprint. Project fully completed in 12 weeks.

9 RouteSmart in Newcastle Environmental Services - Waste Management Used continually to plan and implement logistical changes. Reduced weekly service from 17 to 15 vehicles. Used to plan WAC in 2012/13. Reduced fleet from 15 to 11. How did we know that 4 day working would work? Manages dynamic garden waste customer data 26,000 customers. Allows big data projects to be implemented accurately and with confidence. Used to model change due to communal bin implementation and predicted operational savings. Used to model infrastructural changes to services. Will current resource levels cope with house building in Scotswood and Great Park in the near future?

10 Routesmart Regionally Government s Operational Efficiency Programme funded project via Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership to raise standards and achieve efficiencies in the delivery of frontline services in Route optimisation project to review services in the North-East. Project delivered in 18 months. 10 RouteSmart licences hosted on portal at Node 4 data centre in Derby. Authorities pay yearly maintenance based on size. Routes implemented and project delivered considerable operational savings. 4 million per annum. Largest route optimisation project in Europe covering 1.2 million households. Newcastle added 2 licences to portal in 2012.

12 Questions???? Where is the correct information? Would it be more efficient to work from one depot? Could we work using different shift patterns than the current 4 day week and would they be more efficient? Why is there a mechanical sweeper on Shields Road at 08:15? Do we need a facility in the North of the City? How many sweepers do we need to service every street once a fortnight? A road has been closed Buddle Road Do we still need service this? Who should be informed? Do we need to change anything? Are waste arising's equal across the City? Data can be overwhelming and needs to be managed accordingly

16 Moving Forward.Re-Newcastle This is all well and good; using RouteSmart we can Plan complex big data services. Capture Route Risk Assessment street service notes and individual customer service notes. Calculate how much a service costs. Calculate how much resource we need. Estimate when services should be completed. Get control of our data. But how do we deliver the changes?

17 Our drivers for change Local government budgets reduced for front line services and back office support but the City is growing fast. Digital by default for staff and customers. Traditional maps and paper reports are being replaced. Why? Cost, Dynamics, Limitations, Technology Customer, management and staff expectations now and in the future. Technology is changing very rapidly and our current methods of delivery are becoming outdated as our methods of planning did 5 years ago.

Sharing Big Data between the office and the frontline workforce Integrated Skills have developed tools to overcome these problems known as RouteSmart Navigator.

23 Sharing Big Data between the office and the frontline workforce Integrated Skills have developed tools to overcome these problems known as RouteSmart Navigator. Includes high density navigation mode or simple locate mode with no navigation but ability to capture data and view service data. Off the shelf sat-nav s cannot cope with big data and high density processing with servicing. Off the shelf sat-nav s cannot cope with following specific routes that are not the most efficient A to B route.

24 Winter Maintenance drivers have been trained in using RouteSmart Navigator for Winter Maintenance. Allows any driver to service any route. Each driver now services the route in the correct sequence. No streets are missed from service that have been planned to be serviced. Changes can be shared with all drivers almost immediately. Any extra notes can be added to any street to inform drivers of anything associated with that street such as speed humps or grit blasts etc. Route can be simulated for training purposes designed to save resources.
