KPI Selection Process BASF Initial suggestions Scientific publications External sources Expertise and Experience Relevance Data availability / feasibility Fields of application The sustainability KPIs in BASF s Logistics will be: Emissions Energy consumption Noise Safety Drinking water Final sustainability KPIs 8
Greenhouse Gas Emissions EU
CO 2 -emissions Calculation methodologies Fuel consumption based calculation methodology: CO 2 = consumed fuel (per year) x CO 2 -factor Distance based calculation methodology: CO 2 = transportation distance x transportation volume (per year) x emission factor (per mode of transport) For example, the CO 2 -emissions from the transport of 100 tons product by truck on the road to a destination located 500 km away from the source would be: emissions CO 2 g tons km 500 km g 3,25tons 100 tons 10
CO 2 -emissions factors for distance based calculation methodology Mode of transport Emission factor in g CO 2 per t km Source truck 65 IFEU-Institut, Heidelberg train (electric) 18 IFEU-Institut, Heidelberg train (Diesel) 35 IFEU-Institut, Heidelberg barge (down stream) 10 Contargo, Duisburg barge (upstream) 20 Contargo, Duisburg ocean-going vessel 13 IMO, London feeder ship 20 IMO, London air plane 801 Öko Institut, Berlin 11
KPI emissions: Reduction of emissions by optimization of the transport mode ca. 25% of the continental transports of BASF in Europe use by intermodal transport Yearly savings of the BASF Group in transport from Ludwigshafen and Antwerp sites: CO 2 - emissions tons CO 2 The reduction of CO 2 - emissions in intermodal transport amounts to ca. 65% in relation to the road transport 12
KPI noise: Reduction by using new coatings in the trains axis 13
KPI drinking water: Reduction of the water consumption in the cleaning stations for rail tank cars Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit 14
KPI Drinking water : Reduction of the water consumption in the cleaning stations of road trucks 15
New development : Mega Swap Semi trailer for the intermodal transportation of volume products 16
New development : 45 ft Reefer container for the intermodal transportation of temperature controlled products 17
New development : 45 ft ventilated containers for the intermodal transportation of outgassing products 18
Concept : CargoRAPID 19
EU Comission s Strategy White paper 2011 Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area - Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system Thirty per cent of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes such as rail or waterborne transport by 2030, and more than 50 % by 2050, facilitated by efficient and green freight corridors. To meet this goal will also require appropriate infrastructure to be developed. 20
Situation and perspectives of transport by rail in Spain & Europe Long distances: With respect to Europe Spain is a peripheral country. Spain is a country with large area. Connection to the center of Europe is limited by different rail gauges. The PEITFM objective (Plan Estratégico de Impulso al Transporte Ferroviario de Mercancías) of 2010: intermodal transport 8-10% in 2020 (at present approx. 4%). 21
TRANS-EUROPEAN TRANSPORT NETWORK TEN-T core network corridors November 2013 Nine core network corridors are identified in the annex to the CEF Regulation, which includes a list of projects pre-identified for possible EU funding during the period , based on their added value for TEN-T development and their maturity status. HUB TARRAGONA In Iberia, we have the Mediterranean and the Atlantic corridors. 22
Chemical Industry: Where are we? The chemical industry is at 16% intermodal share of total transport volume* *according to CEFIC Report 2014 on Intermodal Transport Network Development 23
Modes of transport at BASF Data: production center Ludwigshafen 41 % by ship (river) approx. 23 ships/day 36 % by road approx. 2,100 trucks/day 23 % by rail approx. 90 trains/day 24
