2 PTL and Voice: To Technologies TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHT Looking at the landscae of warehouse technologies can be daunting, so it hels to understand where PTL and Voice stand amongst other solutions. First, these two otions are time-roven technologies. PTL has been in oeration for 20 years and Voice for more than 10 years. Both technologies offer significant advantages comared to manual icking oerations while offering lower entry costs than other automated icking solutions such as carousels or robotic icking. Additionally, both technologies are designed to be easily modified to fit future business demands. Real-Time Alications. PTL and Voice systems are real-time alications that rovide accurate inventory, roductivity, and order data to the managers of the systems. In a manual system, activities are not udated in real time, and there can be a large lag in rocessing time. Traditional Collection Alication Reign In Error Rates Dislay Dislay Eliminating the ossibility for errors are strong features in both PTL and Voice icking installations. Here s a samling of otential errors and how the technologies work to imrove error rates: Voice Alication Incorrect Items. Both PTL and Voice direct the oerator to the roduct, removing otential for the oerator to choose the wrong SKU. Omitted Items. Both PTL and Voice require all activity to be comleted before the next activity can be rocessed. Wrong Quantity. PTL and Voice require verification from the oerator, roviding a double check to accuracy of the quantity. Entry Errors. 3 How They Work Voice There are two major tyes of voice systems: User-trained voice temlates. In this system, each oerator trains the system to recognize their voice, creating a voice rofile. By doing so, this system is generally more accurate, but more costly and timeconsuming to setu. Universal voice temlates. All oerators use a universal translation, similar to Google voice. Although this system is not as accurate as the user-trained system, it is still a quality system that is less costly and takes little time to set u. A Voice system directs the oerator (wearing a headset) to conduct icking activities via voice romts. A location ID is read to the oerator, who then moves to the location and seaks a small series of alhanumeric values to confirm the oerator is at the correct location. The system then designates the quantity to be icked, and the oerator seaks back to the system to confirm the quantity. See grahic on age 4. Pick-to-Light In a Pick-to-Light system, lights are used in a icking/ utting cell that direct the oerator to a shelf where the lit dislay rovides instruction for the required activity. An order is initiated when the oerator conducts a barcode scan, which illuminates the lights at the required locations that also dislay the quantity and carton/tote in which to ut a roduct. Oerators move to each location, confirming the comletion of the task by ushing a button on the light dislay. Labor Productivity So which system is better? The takeaway here is that each system has its strengths and weaknesses, and the benefits deend on the alication. However, overall, one can exect faster rates from a PTL installation, in terms of lines icked er hour. An imortant item to note is that both Voice and PTL generally rovide faster rates than an RF system.
