WEB WORKS!
Smart Tex5les WEB - Work Experience Companies WEB is aimed at job seekers and employees from the Kempen and neighbouring regions who require enhanced support in their search for a permanent job. Within these support courses WEB organises training and educa?on, and offers work experience or employment. Employers can come to WEB for training and support for their opera?onal employees, and for advice and assistance in the development of a tailor- made HRM policy.
Reuse centre WEB Objec?ves: 1. Crea?ng sustainable employment for low- skilled people and job seekers 2. Protec?on of the environment by reusing goods 3. Selling quality second hand goods to a fair and affordable price.
Sustainable employment Reuse centre: 66,7 FTE (87 persons) social workshop Social restaurant: 18,3 FTE (24 persons) social workshop Labour Care : 7,5 FTE (20 persons) Loca?ons: 4 Kringwinkels (Reuse shops) in area of 11 municipali?es, popula?on of inhabitants.
Environment Principles of ladder of Lansink: 1. Avoid waste and encourage environmentally responsible produc?on and consump?on. 2. Reuse 3. Recycling 4. Energy recovery 5. Combus?on without energy recovery 6. Waste landfill
Smart Tex5les IOK Afvalbeheer Contracted associa?on for 29 Kempen municipali?es 502,000 residents
Smart Tex5les IOK Afvalbeheer Policy based on the waste hierarchy Waste preven?on, closed material circuits Selec?ve collec?on and logis?cs Own collec?on service and transfer sta?ons Container park management 18 container parks for 20 municipali?es Processing Compos?ng installa?on Mechanical- biological separa?on installa?on
Smart Tex5les Aim and objec?ves of the project: Partnership with IOK Afvalbeheer rela?ng to tex?les: Maximum local reuse (sales through Kringwinkels) Transparency of flows Sustainable employment, Social Economy
Smart Tex5les Aim and objec?ves of the project: Context: Tex?le inflow: 41% reuse through sales in Kringwinkels Large frac?on of 54% primarily for export (recycling) 5% waste
Smart Tex5les Aim and objec?ves of the project: Inves?gate possibili?es to offer sorted tex?le frac?ons as a raw material for local industry Aim for innova?on (including material innova?on) + crea?on of sustainable employment, Social economy
Schema5c presenta5on of the current situa5on Manual processes Automated processes Applica5on Yield ( /tonne) Sor?ng Own shop sales Local sales under own management 6,000 Collec?on reusable tex?les Collec?on by De Kringwinkel Free approx. 300 tonnes/year 41% Sales abroad 200 Remaining flow 54% Waste %
Objec5ve 1: Offer sorted tex5le frac5ons as a raw material for local industry Are local applica?ons available in Flanders/Europe? Premium frac?on: sale in Kringwinkels Remaining flow: Processing into cleaning cloths and sales to local users: Le Relais (FR), La Marchande (NL), etc. Fibre conversion as an intermediate stage for processing into: Spinning Procotex (B), Frankenhuis (NL), etc. Insula?on materials Procotex (B), Frankenhuis (NL), Minot (FR), etc.» Acous?c insula?on for buildings - currently the most interes?ng op?on» Insula?on for floors, roofs, walls - competes with glass wool Price, fire resistance, bacteriological resistance, drip resistance» Insula?on for automo?ve» Other applica?ons such as: Magresses
Objec5ve 2: Aim for innova5on (including material innova5on) + crea5on of sustainable employment, Social economy Manual sor?ng has limita?ons Is a necessary step in the sor?ng process for sor?ng wearable clothing Sor?ng by type of fibre is prac?cally impossible (cogon and wool yes, synthe?c no) Suitable technology: NIR technology solu?ons for sor?ng process
Objec5ve 2: Aim for innova5on (including material innova5on) + crea5on of sustainable employment, Social economy Sor?ng the premium tex?les Ac?vity in the social workshop by well trained employees Reuse is 40% of the collected tex?les, sold in the local Reuse shops Employment in Social Economy Focus: local sustainable employment AND LOCAL REUSE tex?les Sor?ng other tex?le frac?ons NIR technology solu?ons for sor?ng process Upscaling is necessary and partnerships are necessary Demands investments
Con5nua5on of sales abroad? The demand remains in developing countries for the frac?on of wearable clothing Is the local popula?on beger off for it? What about the further processing of the clothing in the developing countries ajerwards? Would it not be beger to make new clothes locally?
CONCLUSION Present situa?on: Most profitable at this moment: local reuse + export the remaining flow Sugges?ons: Discuss the extended producer responsibility to s?mulate local handling of the tex?les (example discarded electrical appliances!) Testcases with NIR technology
How to achieve this? - Step by step approach Processing: Step 1: Premium sor?ng By experienced people (generally women) For sale in own shops 6-10% of total supplied frac?on Based on marke?ng concept Coopera?on with brands for offering unsold ar?cles (limited quan?ty- wow effect) Have you already considered what experience you can offer your customer within your marke9ng strategy and marke9ng plan? Many organisa9ons are concentra9ng fully on the experience economy in their marke9ng strategy. Because excellent products or excellent services are no longer sa9sfactory in the eyes of your customer: he or she wants experience. A wow effect, customer experience, that is what the market of today is about. The Americans Joseph Pine and James Gilmore say that a new economic era is dawning: that of the experience economy. In this experience economy customers want more than just a product or service, he or she primarily wants an experience and chooses suppliers on this basis. This requires considera9on in your marke9ng strategy and marke9ng plan. But also in the story of your organisa9on: your corporate story. Is the cash generator
How to achieve this? - Step by step approach Processing: Step 2: Sor?ng of other frac?ons Manual sor?ng on the basis of wearability (Sub- premium) Flow 1: clothing for export and sale to developing countries Sor?ng on the basis of wearability by people Summer clothing only - no sor?ng with regard to composi?on and colour, the condi?on is that they can be worn Sor?ng depends on the country: one country is not the same as another Export and sale (possible collabora?on with Le Relais) Flow 2: Remaining flow: tex?les for local processing Processing into cleaning cloths Respinning of thread Unravelling
Processing: How to achieve this? - Step by step approach Step 3: Sor?ng of remaining flow Sor?ng using NIR technology on the basis of criterion: Cogon/white for produc?on of cleaning cloths Sales price: 1,000/tonne Jeans/not wearable for unravelling Sales price: 100/tonne Transported clothing for unravelling: Sor?ng according to fibre type for unravelling: cogon/wool Sales price: 10/tonne Monoflows on the basis of composi?on and colour for respinning Volumes? Economically profitable model? (Prices virgin material) In total more than 300 frac?ons are separated
Thank you for your agen?on!
