Part 1 Objectives of the Public Transit System 1. * On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is "strongly disagree" and 10 is "completely agree", to what extent do you agree with the following statements? Implementing a new public transit system in the western part of Gatineau is essential to meet the needs of population growth in this sector... is a necessary investment to improve the quality of transportation... is essential to reduce our impact on the environment... will encourage residents to use public transit more Strongly Completely disagree agree Don t know For public transit to be as efficient as possible (for instance, so it is not slowed by congestion or traffic lights), it must have its own reserved space on the roadway. 2. * On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is "strongly disagree" and 10 is "completely agree", to what extent do you agree with the following statements? To make public transit more appealing, it would be acceptable to Strongly Completely disagree agree Don t know... convert traffic lanes into reserved lanes for public transit... eliminate parking spaces... take private land (expropriations)... use woodlands or heritage land 2

3. In your opinion, what are the three main objectives that the new system should help to achieve? First objective: Second objective: Third objective: 3

The objectives or evaluation criteria for the scenarios A public transit system must reconcile several objectives. In the study, the six objectives below were identified. They correspond to the main sets of criteria that will be used to evaluate each scenario. Depending on the importance given to each set of criteria, one scenario could appear more advantageous compared with the others. We ask you to complete this weighting exercise by distributing 100 points among the six following criteria: give the most points to the criteria you think are the most important, and fewer points to those you think are less important. You can give between 0 and 100 points to each of the criteria, but the total must equal Distribute 100 points among the six objectives below: Objective Increase public transit use Number of points Serve the greatest number of residences and activity centres Improve public transit system performance (travel and waiting times) Improve the quality of life of citizens and preserve a natural, healthy environment Contribute to the safety and efficiency of travel for all modes of transportation Establish the most favourable investment for taxpayers in terms of the service offered (from both the cost of the infrastructures and the operating costs of the service) Total 100 4

Part 2 Your Preferences Regarding the Service Offered Services with or without transfers Riders could be required to transfer one or more times in order to improve the system s efficiency or to change from one mode to another (from bus to tram, for example). 5. * By how many minutes would your total travel time (including wait time) need to be reduced for you to choose a trip that includes a transfer, rather than a direct trip? By 1 to 3 minutes By 4 to 6 minutes By 7 to 9 minutes By 10 to 12 minutes I would prefer a direct trip even if my total travel time was longer by more than 12 minutes Don t know 6. * Depending on the mode used, up to how many times would you be willing to transfer? 0 transfers 1 transfer 2 transfers Bus rapid transit (BRT) Tram Walking distance Having stops close together means that riders do not have to walk very far to get to their stop. However, this also means that the vehicle must stop more frequently. The travel time would therefore be longer, and less competitive compared with driving a car. 7. * Personally, keeping in mind that shorter walking distances mean slower services, for up to how long would you be willing to walk to access a high frequency service? minutes 5

Part 3 Proposed Scenarios 8. * Keeping the development vision for the City of Gatineau in mind, which scenario do you think is the most beneficial for the entire population in the western part of Gatineau? Scenario A: improve the current system... Answer question 11 Scenario B: Aylmer Road-Taché... Answer questions 9 et 11 Scenario C: Allumettières... Answer questions 10 et 11 Don t know... Go to question 12 (page 7) 9. * If you chose scenario B, do you prefer one of the variations in particular? Scenario B: Aylmer Road and Alexandre-Taché Variation B1: use Lucerne behind UQO Variation B2: use the Champlain Bridge to Ottawa Doesn t matter / Don t know 10. * If you chose scenario C, do you prefer one of the variations in particular? Scenario C: use the full length of Allumettières Variation C1: use McConnell and Plateau Doesn t matter / Don t know 11. * Why did you choose this scenario? 6

12. * Among the scenarios proposed, do you think that any of them are unacceptable? Scenario A: improve the current system Scenario B: Aylmer Road-Taché Scenario C: Allumettières No, I don t think any of the three scenarios are unacceptable... Go to question 14 Don t know... Go to question For what reason(s)? 7

Part 4 Transportation Modes 14. * Among the adjectives below, check the 3 attributes that are the most important for you regarding the mode of transportation. Rapid Ecological / electric Quiet Reliable Frequent Modern Comfortable Accessible (for people with reduced mobility, strollers, etc.) Without transfers Inexpensive to operate (operating costs) Inexpensive to implement (initial investment) 8

Depending on projected ridership, three modes of transportation can be considered for the western part of Gatineau: bus, bus rapid transit (BRT) or tram. 15. * Which mode(s) of transportation would you prefer? Bus Bus rapid transit (BRT)* Tram No preference / Don t know * The image represents the BRT considered for Quebec City and Lévis.
