1 MATERIAL TEST i109 Evaluation of Viscosity of Ceramic Paste with Shimadzu Flowtester Model CFT When forming ceramics in their paste state prior to sintering, several forming methods are available for choice among pressing, rocking, turning, and extruding depending on the content of product being formed. Various measures are implemented to ensure easy and appropriate forming, such as mixing ceramic powder with forming aids to improve flowability and forming efficiency as well as dimensional precision, density, and mechanical strength. A variety of forming agents, including organic type agents (cellulose methyl, cellulose acetate, etc.) and inorganic type agents (clays, silicone alumina cement, etc.) are generally available for a variety of purposes, but manufacturers are continually devoting themselves to developing their own forming aids to achieve the flowability and forming efficiency most appropriate to their product and reduce adverse effects on the production process. The Shimadzu Flowtester Model CFT, a constant load extruding capillary rheometer, features excellent performance in the determination of processing conditions including temperature,

2 pressure and flow rate for forming ceramics, high quality engineering polymer materials and composite materials. The CFT is also widely applicable to research and development and quality control of other viscous materials. The following is an example of an evaluation of the relationship between viscosity, shear rate and sear stress in a ceramic paste. The test was performed in constant temperature mode on ceramic powders mixed with organic and inorganic forming aids. Flowability test on ceramic paste Test conditions Specimen Test temperature :Ceramic powder + forming aid (organic and inorganic type) + water :room temperature (25 degrees Celsius) Extruding conditions :Extruding pressure: (10-150kgf/cm 2 ) Die: 1Dm diam. x 1mm length

5 Test result Fig.2 is an example of stroke - time curves for a constant temperature test at room temperature on ceramic paste mixed with organic forming aid. Figs.3 and 4 are examples of viscosity and shear stress - shear rate curves obtained by analyzing the flow curve data of organic forming aids A and B at varied extruding pressures. Fig.5 is an example of a stroke-time curves of ceramic paste mixed with inorganic forming aid in a constant temperature test at room temperature. Figs.6 and 7 are examples of viscosity and shear stress - shear rate curves obtained by analyzing flow curve data at varied extruding pressures. Useful information on the viscosity of ceramic pastes mixed with various types of forming aid can be obtained as shown above. * Please be advised that data obtained before the implementation of the current Weights and Measures Law may be presented in terms of gravimetric unit.
