General viii Highlights of Mineral Production April 2014 to March 2015 During the financial year , the total value of mineral production (excluding atomic minerals and minor minerals and also excluding value for February and March in respect of 31 minerals notified as minor minerals w.e.f ) in the country was at Rs crore indicating a nominal increase over the previous year. This was mainly due to increase in the production of Coal, Lignite, Lead Conc., Zinc Conc., Flourite, Kyanite, Limestone, Magnesite, Phosphorite and Vermiculite. The production of the minerals like Natural Gas (Ut.), Petroleum (Crude), Bauxite, Chromite, Copper Ore and Conc., Gold, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore, Silver, Tin Conc., Apatite, Diamond, Garnet (Abrasive), Graphite, Limeshell, Marl, Moulding Sand, Sillimanite, Selenite, Wollastonite etc. decreased during B. Reporting Mines The Reporting mine is defined as, "a mine reporting production or reporting 'Nil' production during a year but engaged in developmental work such as overburden removal, underground driving, winzing, sinking work; exploration by pitting, trenching or drilling as evident from the MCDR Returns". Total number of reporting mines (excluding atomic and minor minerals) during decreased to 3524 as compared to 3979 in the preceding year. The number of mines in fuel group of minerals excluding petroleum (crude) and natural gas (utilised) was 552, metallic group of minerals was 637 and in the case of non-metallic group of minerals it was In the total number of mines in , among major states, Rajasthan accounted for as many as 541 or 15.4, Andhra Pradesh 470 or 13.3 mines, Gujarat 410 or 11.6, Madhya Pradesh 376 or 10.7, Tamil Nadu 292 or 8.3, Jharkhand 224 or 6.4, Chhattisgarh 215 or 6.1, Karnataka 183 or 5.2, Odisha 172 or 4.9, Maharashtra 162 or 4.6 Telangana 154 or 4.4 and West Bengal 119 or 3.4 percent. The remaining States/Union Territories accounted for the other 206 or 5.8 percent of total mines. D. Statewise Analysis As regards State-wise scenario during , the value of mineral production (excluding atomic minerals and minor minerals and also excluding value for February and March in respect of 31 minerals notified as minor minerals marked 'mm' w.e.f ) from Off-Shore region was the highest at Rs crore or 23.0 of the total value of mineral production followed in order of importance by Odisha Rs crore or 12.5, Jharkhand Rs crore or 12.3, Rajasthan Rs crore or 10.6, Chhattisgarh Rs crore or 8.2, Madhya Pradesh Rs crore or 6.1, Gujarat Rs crore or 4.9, Assam Rs crore or 4.6, Telangana Rs.8178 or 3.5, Maharashtra Rs.7064 crore or 3.0, Tamil Nadu Rs.6487 crore and Karnataka Rs.6465 crore or 2.7 each, West Bengal Rs.4547 crore or 1.9, Meghalaya Rs.4038 crore or 1.7 and Uttar Pradesh Rs crore and Andhra Pradesh Rs.2031 or 0.9 each. Other States/Union Territories shared the remaining 1344 crore or 0.6 of the total value of mineral production. Among the States, value of mineral production registered an increase in, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Whereas, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Odisha, Rajasthan and Off-Shore region indicated decline in value of mineral production during the year under review.

Mineral-wise Analysis ix During the year under review, the contribution of Coal in terms of value was the highest at Rs crore or about 37.7 of the total value of mineral production followed by Petroleum (crude) Rs crore or 28.8, Iron Ore Rs crore or about 12.1, natural gas (utilised) Rs crore or 11.4, lignite Rs.6418 crore or 2.7, limestone Rs.5212 crore or 2.2 and zinc conc. Rs.3144 crore or 1.3 percent. The share of these seven minerals together to the total value of mineral production during was about 96.2 percent. The contribution of fuel minerals to the total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) was 81 percent. The remaining 19 was on account of MCDR minerals comprising metallic (16) and non-metallic (3). A brief review of the production trend of some of the important minerals, which come under the purview of MCDR 1988, is as follows: METALLIC MINERALS: BAUXITE: The Production of bauxite at thousand tonnes during registered a decrease of 0.4 as compared to the previous year. Odisha with 42 share was the leading state in bauxite production followed by Gujarat (25), Maharashtra (12), Jharkhand (9), Chhattisgarh (7), Madhya Pradesh (4). The remaining was contributed by Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. NALCO, Utkkal Alumina Industrial Ltd., HINDALCO, Bombay Minerals and BALCO are the major companies engaged in the mining of bauxite in the country. The share of these companies was 68 in the total production during The contribution of Panchpatmali bauxite mine of NALCO was 26 in the total output. The share of public sector in the total production was 29. There were 152 reporting mines of bauxite during of which 18 were in public sector and the remaining 134 in private sector. CHROMITE: The production of chromite at 2164 thousand tonnes in decreased by 25 as compared to that in the previous year due to suspension of mining in a few major minerals in Odisha due to statutory orders. Odisha reported almost entire production of chromite. There were 25 reporting mines during the year as compared to 26 in the previous year. Mining of chromite was mostly dominated by six principal producers, namely OMC, IMFAL, Balasore Alloys, FACOR, Tata Steel and Jindal Stripe Ltd. The percentage shares of production of these six companies to the total production was 95 during the year. The three major public sector companies, namely OMC, MML and IDCOL together reported 37 of the total production. While the remaining 63 was contributed by private sector mines. COPPER ORE AND CONC.: The production of copper ore in at 3586 thousand tonnes decreased by 5 as compared to that in the previous year. There were five reporting mines of copper ore in HCL was the only producer of copper ore and copper concentrate in India. The production of copper concentrates at 108 th. tonnes decreased by 23 in as compared to that in the previous year. GOLD: Hutti Gold Mine Limited was the major producer of primary gold in India accounting for 99 of the total production and the rest was reported by Manmohan Mineral Industries (P) Ltd. The production of gold ore at 449 th. tonnes in the year increased by 7 as compared to that in the previous year. The recovery of gold bullion in the current year was decreased by 8 as compared to that in the previous year due to decrease in ore treated and grade by HGML. The production of Gold primary in was 1440 kgs. There were four mines reporting production of gold during the year under review. Out of these, three mines were located in Karnataka and one mine was in Jharkhand state. IRON ORE: The production of iron ore consisting of lumps, fines and concentrates at million tonnes in decreased by 15 as compared to million tonnes in the previous year. There were 290 reporting mines in as against 322 mines in the previous year. Besides, production of iron ore was reported by 20 associated mines during as against 18 associated mines in the previous year. No production was reported from Goa due to discontinuation of mining operations. During the year under review, Odisha was the leading state in Iron Ore production accounting for 40 of the total production followed by Chhattisgarh (23), Karnataka (16), Jharkhand (15),

6 x and remaining (6) production was reported from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Telangana. Public Sector contributed about 46 of the total production, out of which 53 was contributed by NMDC, 39 by SAIL and 4 by Orissa Mining Corporation Limited. The share of private sector in the total production was 54, out of which Tata Steel Ltd. contributed 21 in The five leading producers, namely NMDC, SAIL, Tata Steel Ltd., Rungta Mines Pvt. Ltd. and Serajuddin and Co. having 24 mines together contributed 65 of the total production of iron ore in the country. LEAD AND ZINC ORE & CONC.: The production of lead & zinc ore at 9346 thousand tonnes in increased by 1 as compared to that in the previous year. There were eight mines reporting production of lead and zinc ore in the current year. The production of lead concentrate increased by about 2 and the production of zinc concentrate increased by 1 during the year. MANGANESE ORE: The production of manganese ore at 2345 thousand tonnes in decreased by 11 as compared to the previous year. There were 146 reporting mines of manganese ore in as against 163 in previous year. MOIL Ltd., continued to be the largest producer of manganese ore contributing 49 of the total production followed by Tata Steel Ltd. (8), SMIORE (7), RBSSDP (6) and ML Rungta (5). The share of these five principal producers having 28 reporting mines was about 75 of the total production. Twenty two public sector mines were engaged in the mining of manganese ore in India during the year with contribution as 49 to the total production. NON-METALLIC MINERALS: DOLOMITE: The production of Dolomite in (up to January 2015) at 6209 thousand tonnes registered a decreased of 15 as compared to previous full year. Five principal producers reported 32 of the total production of Dolomite. Steel Authority of India Ltd. accounted for 13 of the total production was the leading producer of dolomite, which was followed by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (7), South West Mining Ltd. (6), A.N. Patnaik (3) and Manish Singh Banafer (3). Seven public sector mines (including one associate mine) contributed about 23 of the total production during the year. There were 172 reporting mines in as against 185 mines in the year Chhattisgarh state was the leading producer of Dolomite among the states and contributed about 39 of total production followed by Andhra Pradesh (11) and Karnataka (9) and remaining 41 was contributed by other eight states. LIMESTONE: The production of limestone at million tonnes during increased by 4 as compared to that in the previous year. There were 740 reporting mines during the year, as against 779 mines in the previous year. There were 23 public and 717 private sector reporting mines during as against 21 public and 758 private sector reporting mines in the previous year. About 95 of the total production was reported by captive mines. As regards state wise production, Rajasthan contributed (21), followed by Madhya Pradesh (13), Andhra Pradesh (12), Gujarat (9), Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh & Tamil Nadu (8 each) and remaining (13) production was contributed by the other states. About 54 of total production was reported by principal producers namely; Ultra Tech Cement Limited (16), ACC Limited and Ambuja Cement (7 each), Jaiprakash Associates Limited & Shree Cement Limited (6 each), The India Cement Limited, Century Textiles & Industries Ltd., The Ramco Cements Ltd. and Lafarge India Pvt. Ltd. (3 each). PHOSPHORITE: The production of phosphorite at 1580 thousand tonnes in increased by 9 as compared to that in the previous year. Ninety one percent of the total output during the year was contributed by public sector mines and the remaining 9 was reported by one mine of Hindustan Zinc Limited. The share of Jhamarkotra mine of RSMML was about 86 of the total production during There were 5 reporting mines during as in the previous year. *****
