SB 13
An aerial view of the dams at Goodwoods. Producing easy-care cattle in the Eastern Cape By Izak Hofmeyr Justin and Karen Stirk operate a mixed farming business on their farm Goodwoods near Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape. Justin received SA Studbook s Elite 2014 Award for cattle breeder of the year. The Stirks farm on hectares with 250 stud Bonsmara cows (570 registered animals), 150 commercial cows, 300 Dorper ewes and 250 Boer goats. In addition they produce 10ha of cherry peppers under drip irrigation for Carara Agro Processing in Grahamstown and 5ha of cabbage mostly for the informal market, also under drip irrigation. They also have 7ha of macadamias. We have four dams on the farm, which were built in the early 1980s and give us a storage capacity for about two-and-ahalf years. We used to irrigate about 20 hectares of pastures for our sheep, but we have now replaced that with higher risk but notably higher return crops. The drip irrigation has extended our water supply by a good 12 to 14 months. We have 40 hectares that can be irrigated, and we rotate the crops in a system of peppers one year, cabbages one year and then dry pastures for five years. The pastures are mainly a Katambora Rhodes grass and Smutsfinger mixture, which is utilised mainly by the cattle during the five-year period in the crop rotation programme. Justin and Karen Stirk. Pasture quality Over the past few years Justin has dropped their small stock numbers significantly and increased the cattle numbers due to a marked change in the winter rainfall patterns in the area. I don t know if it is climate change, but due to very sporadic rains in the winter we just saw a decline in the quality of the pasture during winter, which placed strain on our fodder flow programme. So we moved away from planting oats and rye in the winter and established permanent Rhodes and Smutsfinger pastures for the increased cattle numbers. With Smutsfinger being a notoriously difficult grass to establish, the Rhodes component provides a large percentage of the bulk initially. Rhodes, however, is in turn notorious for declining rather quickly. By fertilising every two years and then allowing the pasture to go to seed every three years at least, Justin has succeeded in keeping both the Rhodes and Smutsfinger components of the pasture vibrant. We have pastures here that are at least 30 years old and are still as productive as ever. Type of veld The natural veld is a mixture of sourveld, sweet valley bushveld and bushveld slopes, with about 30% planted pastures, 30% sourveld and the rest valley bushveld and bushveld slopes. We run our sheep on the valley bush- 14
AT HOME WITH... The type of bulls that Justin produces. veld and on the southern-facing slopes that are slightly sourer, and wean the lambs at about 27kg directly into our own feedlot. The goats, on the other hand, play an important role in utilising the bush and creating a browse line, which provides light for the grass underneath the bushes to grow. We used to run 900 Angora goats, but because of the unpredictability of our weather and the severe cold fronts that can pass through, we suffered too many losses and eventually we phased out the goats totally. The effect was that the bushes started overgrowing the veld. So we brought back the goat factor, but this time Boer goats, and their positive effect on the veld was immediately visible. Bonsmara stud It was for their Goodwoods Bonsmara Stud that Justin received the Studbook Elite Award earlier this year. He says the main reason is because he enjoys having his recordkeeping in an excellent order. We registered our stud in 2002 and we have grown it since then from 90 to 250 cows. I really enjoy the breeding side, together with the data that goes with it. I also enjoy being involved with breed society activities. As such I am a senior inspector and I also involve myself quite heavily with the commercial sector in our area in providing assistance and advice. You have to have a passion for breeding. Justin is also heavily involved in running the well-known Frontier Bonsmara Sale in Grahamstown, which has been going on for nine years, and has developed a name for the quality bulls that can be acquired there at reasonable prices. The Frontier Sale is growing into one of the premier Bonsmara sales in the country and we are very proud to be associated with it. His ideal animal Justin says the area where he farms, is a tick-infested area with heartwater, gallsickness and redwater, both Asiatic and African, prevalent. We try to breed animals that thrive on the veld without supplementary feed. We are far away from the maize production areas and bringing in feed is very expensive. So we fatten off the veld, and for that you need cattle that are really well-adapted. The animal that we strive to breed is a medium-framed animal with excellent capacity and depth, broad muzzle, full behind the shoulder with a really good heart girth. Selecting for these traits, had them ending up with a really good coat as well, something that is crucial against the ticks. It goes without saying that fertility remains the basis of any selection. If a cow does not produce a calf that we can sell, she has to fill in that income gap herself. Due to this approach, we maintain an average inter-calving period of 380 days, which I intend to improve in the years to come. The average weight of the cows is about 560kg, and Justin weans at an average weight of about 250 to 270kg for bull calves and between 230 and 240kg for heifers. Our cows are surprisingly heavy, but they are not tall at all. The weight is much rather a reflection of the capacity and depth in their bodies. Our worst conception figure ever was 91% and the best 98%. Justin maintains two calving seasons, the first between September and November, and the second from February to April. When we select bulls, we try to select for good growth. The effect is that our weaning weights have improved by a good 15% since we started the stud. Use of aids We make use of any aid that can help to optimise our operation. We utilise, for example, a scientific lick supplement programme and a stringent inoculation programme. I think many commercial producers fall short as they tend not to want to spend money on these aspects. The fact is that they end up losing much more than the expense of the programmes. The use of a multivitamin injection, for example, can have a tremendous effect in increasing conception rates. And every calf born extra is pure profit. Although these are important aids to optimise your commercial operation, says Justin, the use of performance-tested bulls forms the other vital link to a successful operation. You have to know what bull you use. Bulls not performancetested have caused many herds to go backwards. If he has to describe the stud in one sentence, he says it would be that they produce easy care, fertile animals that are excellently adapted to the environment with increased resistance to diseases. These traits make them very attractive to commercial buyers because they will adapt and thrive in any part of the country. SB 15

Bonsmara the ideal weaner ADVERTORIAL A frequently asked question is: What is the ideal weaner? In the South African market, most weaners end up in a feedlot, thus the South African Feedlot Association s answer is easy and straightforward: The calf that eventually brings in the biggest profit and is acceptable to the consumer. So, eventually, the consumer dictates what the weaner farmer should produce! Before the farmer can start marketing his weaners, his goal must be a tender, juicy steak on the consumer s plate. To get to that mouth-watering goal, the weaner has to turn out an A-grade carcass of 240 to 260kg, with a fat code of two to three. This is where the medium-framed Bonsmara calf with its excellent growth performance and ability to adapt fits the bill perfectly. Bonsmara calves wean on 205 days at an average mass of 233kg, which makes it the ideal calf for the abovementioned criteria. Feedlots are constantly looking for economical growth potential, in other words: Good average daily gain (ADG). Good feed conversion ratio (FCR). Good health status. Carcass quality within the weight and fat code framework. David Cock, Tempevale Bonsmaras The Bonsmara produces ideal weaner calves, which serve as excellent replacement heifers. Average daily gain Because the Bonsmara is the most common cattle breed in South Africa, most weaners that are subjected to growth tests are Bonsmara. These tests are run either on the farm or at a centrally situated test station. The ADG of Bonsmara steers at test stations averages 1 769g per day. Feedlots usually feed the weaners for 120 to 130 days, during which period a weaner will gain approximately 229kg. When the weight at arrival of 233kg is added, the result fits the frame of the ideal weight and fat code perfectly. Feed conversion ratio Bonsmara steers FCR impresses at 5,94kg, indicating that the animal has converted 5,94kg of food to produce 1kg of meat mass. Besides the price of the weaner, most of the money spent by a feedlot lies in feeding making the Bonsmara weaner very costeffective. Good health status The Bonsmara is known for its adaptability in every climate region in South Africa, as well as in other countries and continents. Feedlots are not concerned that Bonsmara weaners will not adapt in their unique circumstances, even when they are brought from other climatic zones. Gerrit van Zyl, Hanzyl Bonsmaras Bonsmara cows calve with ease, are good mothers and produce enough milk to wean robust calves. Carcass quality and fat code According to the results of the annual South African Meat Industry Company (Samic) carcass competition, Bonsmara rules the waves! For many consecutive years Bonsmara carcasses have either won or taken most of the first five places in the competition. The most recent national winner was a Bonsmara carcass with a winning percentage of 99,96% making it comply almost 100% to the weight, frame and fat code. Now that means business! Because marketing is the essence of production, a Bonsmara farmer doesn t need to be concerned that he will have difficulty finding buyers for his weaners. The medium frame of a Bonsmara cow is ideal to produce a weaner acceptable to the feedlot and with the ability to turn out a top-quality carcass. Consumers can be assured that when they buy Bonsmara meat, it will be of the most tender available. In other words: From farmer to table Bonsmara is the answer!

Kleurvariasies is deesdae baie gewild.
