4 The Prject The transitin frm an ecnmy based n fssil resurces t a bi-based ecnmy shuld be realized sner than anticipated at the mment. The cnversin f bimass int energy surces (bifuels, bigas) and chemicals plays an essential rle in this transitin. T efficiently cnvert bimass and agricultural, industrial and municipal waste int fermentable sugars, chemical building blcks r bi-based materials, enzymes play an indispensable rle. Hwever, the use f the currently available enzymes has nt lived up t the expectatins as little r n effects culd be bserved. Genencr Internatinal BV has recently develped a new enzyme prduct, derived frm Myceliphthra thermphila C1, that in recent field trials has shwn a prmising 10% cstreductin in the prductin f bigas frm rganic waste

5 The Objectives The main bjective f DEMETER is t demnstrate a yield increase and cst reductin f the enzyme prductin prcess as well as its psitive effect n bigas prductin in Eurpe. The steps are: t imprve and scale-up the enzymeprducing fermentatin prcess t yield at least 20% t imprve dwnstream prcessing leading t a cst reductin f 15% t demnstrate the imprved prductin prcess in a L pilt plant
