1 JOB DESCRIPTION General Information: Job Title Fabrication Lead Hand Department Operations Reports To Operations Manager Direct Reports Punch Press Operators, Fabrication Workers, Assigned Temporary Staff Document History November 2016 Purpose: The purpose of the Fabrication Lead Hand is to ensure quality punched and fabricated metal/plastic parts are produced within set lead times. This position is a hands on line position with additional leadership and process requirements. The optimal breakdown of hours is: 60% Providing resource capacity to the team 20% Equipment maintenance and process improvement 20% Leadership activities S/he leads Fabrication Workers and Punch Press Operators. This includes ensuring quality standards are met and addressing issues that arise relating to materials, equipment, jigs and tooling. S/he is the go to person for the team in dealing with roadblocks and issues that prevent processing of orders and will report on production inefficiencies and work with the team to determine root causes and counter measures when needed. In this capacity, the Prepress and Digital Printing Department Lead Hand will liaise with the Production Scheduler, and other Operations Lead Hands. 1

2 Qualifications (Skills and Knowledge): Skills & Experience 3 years of related experience in a similar sized company. Ability to understand, read, write and communicate in English. Education High school diploma Technical Experience with an MRP & ERP system (preferably NAV). Intermediate knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Must have WHMIS Knowledge Forklift Certification (stand up narrow reach) is an asset. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing. Personal Characteristics Ability to coach and motivate employees. Must be organized and logical. Extremely detail oriented. Ability to work in fast paced environments. Ability to work independently and be self-directed. Ability to work well in a team environment. Ability to meet tight deadlines. Strong problem solving skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to be Lean Certified. Physical Requirements Ability to perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time. Must be able to stand for long periods of time Must be able to lift 50lbs Shift Requirements Flexible hours required. Open to working overtime when needed. 3 Key Duties General Management Responsible for the team s output and efficiency within scheduled deadlines. Be able to work with and alongside your team and assist in other areas of Operations when needed to meet on-time delivery deadlines. Ensure all staff is able to work efficiently by having adequate supplies and materials available to perform their job functions. Approve Operator Time Sheets. First approval of team member s vacation requests. Communicate any production delays to the Production Scheduler. Administer performance evaluations for direct reports. Performance reviews must be signed off and approved by the Operations Manager. Ensure the team meets scheduled deadlines. Training Recognize team training opportunities. Ensure that on-boarding training is executed for all new team members. Train temporary staff on all processes including quality and safety standards within their assigned department. Inventory Ensure that all team operational transactions are recorded accurately in Navision. Assist with inventory movement bin location movement. Complete inventory checks when requested. Participate in the planning and execution of cycle counts and the annual inventory count with the Warehouse Lead Hand. Document Scrap on inventory adjustment form and/or the production order for sub-contracted items. Production & Packing Make labels and instruction sheets when necessary. Ensure that any special instructions attached to specific orders are followed. Prep all metals and plastics for printing including production of Melinex. Package nametags. Taping. Labeling nametags for distributor kits. Badge assembly Visitor Badge Assembly Rotary Engraving Fabrication of metal and plastics parts including punching, bending, corner rounding, sanding, custom sizing, laminating, taping and engraving. Recycle metal scrap. Quality Ensure that company quality protocols and standards are met. Recognize and resolve quality issues that fall within Quality Assurance s defined parameters. Identify new quality issues as they arise and notify Quality Assurance. Provide recommendations for improvement to Quality Assurance. Assist with the resolution of new quality issues. 3

4 Safety Ensure all employees are wearing their PPE gear. Ensure everyone is following the safety guidelines and practices put in place by the Safety Committee. Stop work and report any safety breaches or violations to a safety committee member. Delivery safety orientation and training programs to operators. Lean Ensure continuous improvement through the implementation of Lean manufacturing processes (reduce waste, optimize manufacturing flow, logistics controls, and increase customer value). Conduct 5S audits on operations areas excluding areas of own responsibility. Identify root causes and make recommendations to reduce costs and improve efficiencies without compromising quality. Execute approved cost saving recommendations. Coach Operators on implementing Lean practices. Meetings and Reporting Provide monthly reports (errors, safety, machinery, improvements etc.). Attend operations meetings (daily team huddle, daily Lead Hand huddles, monthly operations meeting etc.). Document and report any Lean process improvements. Create, implement and follow machine maintenance procedures and log maintenance activities. Report on key performance indicators for all Operators to ensure effective targets, goals and expectations are met. 4
