2 Submission Instructions In this project you have to build a solution for a customer s lab environments. This professional project will utilise virtualisation technology, and will be used as a prototype to test the feasibility of using this technology in other labs for student project work. You will be expected to design an implementation plan that addresses the needs of the organisation. Information on the customers, and its requirements are described in the Case Study attached to this document. It is expected that you will professionally manage and document every step of this project, as your instructions will be used to replicate the roll-out of this solution to other labs for extended trials. The project will follow the Systems Development Life Cycle and will follow the project stages and deadlines listed below. Milestones & Deadlines: Milestone 1: Project Initiation [Week 1] Milestone 2: Concept Development [Weeks 2-3] Milestone 3: Planning [Week 5] Milestone 4: Requirements Analysis [Week 6] Milestone 5: Design [Weeks 8-10] Milestone 6: Development [Week 14] Milestone 7: Integration & Test [Week 14] Milestone 8: Implementation [Week 15] Milestone 9: Operations & Maintenance [Week 15] What to submit: 1. Resubmission penalty: If you receive an NYC (Not yet competent) or MER (More evidence required) you will be given one opportunity to resubmit your work for remarking. The maximum mark awarded for a resubmitted assessment will be a pass mark of 50%. Late submission penalty: No extensions will be given without Head Teacher approval; appropriate evidence must be supplied (e.g. medical certificate) to support your request. Marks will be deducted for late assignments. Please refer to your IT Faculty Student hand book for further information relating to late submission of assignments. Marking Guide: To gain a minimum pass mark you must have completed all tasks. For Each unit, you must be deemed competent before a result can be awarded. Grades will be awarded only after you have been deemed competent in each of the learning objectives as outlined in your student assessment guides and in the marking guide of this assessment. In addition to delivering the elements identified below, you will be also assessed against the employability skills, Critical skills, Required Knowledge, and Required Skills as identified above. 4 Objectives and Requirements General Project to be managed and documented as a Professional Project. The Project will be completed as a Team. Teams will consist of no more than 3 members (or by special arrangement) o Proposed Teams will need to be approved by your teacher prior to commencement of project. Marks will be awarded to students on a team basis, but may be adjusted at your teachers discretion on an individual basis depending on a students participation in the team. o Each Week, a verbal report of your weekly project activities will be presented to the class, and a written summary given to your teacher. Your marks may be adjusted if your documentation does not support equal participation, or is not supported by your team mates. This will be at the decision of your teacher after consultation with your team members, and you. A basic project management plan must be submitted as the first step in this assessment. Figure 2 Virtualization, Perspecsys Photos 2013 Scenario KCIT Inc., have identified a desire to use virtualisation for their lab computers (Teachers PCs as well as the student s PCs). In summary, you will be required to address the following in your project. Note: Further detailed information regarding project deliverables can be found in the sections below, and the supporting documents. Review the Case Study: Case Study - 1: Read through this cases study to develop a good understanding of your customer (KCIT) and their requirements for the project. On the following page is a summarised version of the project but it should be stressed, this summary should not replace the detailed deliverables identified below. 5 Project Summary Determine the due dates for each project milestone. Develop an understanding of the business, the context that it conducts its business activities, and the context of the business needs. Determine the business problem and its requirements. Evaluate the business threats and risks to the ICT systems. Document disaster recovery plan and submit to appropriate person for review and sign-off Investigate advantages and disadvantages of current and proposed ICT systems Design and build a sustainable test network and systems to develop your project on. o For your design, your network design should include all equipment necessary to implement the project. Design and build one virtualised Windows Server that must reproduce the functionality of the existing network server. Design and build two (2) student PCs to allow the system to be booted into one of two virtualised desktop environments. (eg. 1xWindows 8 and 1xWindows 7) for each of the labs. The choice of the virtualisation software/host is up to you, but you will be required to briefly discuss what virtualisation software you considered, and why you selected/recommended your chosen solution. You will then have to replicate all the functionality of the existing networks including (but not limited to); o A server that provides a Microsoft Active Directory Domain environment, DNS and DHCP for all networks o A minimum of 2 PCs per network (these will be used for testing as well as representing the Lab PCs for student use.) o An internal web server (intranet) o Install software and configure and test voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and videoconferencing services o Configure an appropriate automated antivirus solution o Complete a comprehensive test phase for your final project. o Undertake ongoing monitoring of the viability and reliability of network security Fully Document the project in a professional report. Project Contacts KCITinc, have identified one of their current Systems Administrator s as your point of contact, for any further questions that you might have. The company has stressed the importance to document any further questions asked (and responses) to ensure continuity in the documentation of the project. Correspondingly, all requests for further information should be made Via . Your Contact will be able to provide you with any relevant passwords as required. Your Contacts will be: Scott Martin. scott.martin@tafensw.edu.au Az de Silva. azdesilva@gmail.com Created by Scott Martin on 8/07/16 Last updated by Desilva, Azhirai on 12/07/16 Page 5 of 14
