Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) saves $1million and tops staff satisfaction Despite student enrolment figures increasing 50 percent over the last three years, CIT has saved $1 million in operational costs and rationalised its printer fleet by more than 60 percent after selecting Fuji Xerox Australia as its print provider. Staff satisfaction levels at the Institute s print centre now average 99 percent and CIT has been able to divert more resources into providing students with a superior learning experience. Challenge Cutting costs and increasing efficiency CIT is ACT s leading vocational education provider. Before partnering with Fuji Xerox Australia in January 2008, CIT ran its own print centre and several departments managed their individual printing requirements. The Institute was using printing equipment from multiple suppliers across its four campuses and equipment was underutilised while IT staff were burdened with complex support and maintenance requirements. In the absence of a centralised print strategy the institute could not adequately control costs or maintain service quality. We wanted to work with a print service provider that could become a trusted partner and help us save costs while becoming more sustainable. By relocating printers from multiple student labs to one centralised PrintCentre, CIT has cut further costs by reducing floor space. Within the first 12 months of partnering with Fuji Xerox Australia, we achieved a 47 percent reduction in operational costs and saved $1 million. We expect ongoing savings of $1 million per annum over the next four years, said Dr. Adrian. CIT now has full visibility of both the volume and cost of printing across the organisation. We can see how much paper is being used and by whom whereas previously we had no mechanism in place to monitor this, said Shane Kay. We ve been able to cut down on unnecessary printing costs while becoming more environmentally sustainable. We were also impressed with Fuji Xerox Australia s commitment to the environment. The Fuji Xerox carbon calculator gave us a really good understanding of how we could reduce the carbon footprint of our printing infrastructure. Improving quality of materials and strengthening CIT s brand Through its agreement with Fuji Xerox Australia, CIT has ensured all of its collateral is standardised and printed to the highest quality, helping CIT strengthen its brand. All our collateral is now completely uniform, which has helped us strengthen our brand and positioning in the marketplace. Previously, there was some confusion about our value proposition because staff were handling their own printing requirements and not conforming to the same guidelines, said Dr. Adrian. Investing more resources to providing a quality learning experience By achieving the $1 million cost saving, CIT has been able to divert more money into initiatives such as CIT Online to provide students with a superior learning experience. CIT will launch a greater range of online courses in 2010 to give students more choice and flexibility, especially since 92 percent are already in the workforce.
