3 ACCESSORIES The machine may be fitted with: front surface subsoiler anchorage points: adjustable, their purpose is to remove caked earth from the tractor tyres; front depth subsoiler anchorage points: adjustable, their purpose is to break up any turf-forming plants in the soil and lift them towards the rotors; hydraulic jacks for the adjustment of the working depth of the rear rollers, directly from the tractor cab; front pair of wheels: for a finer adjustment of working depth when rear rollers are not fitted; left and right front small ploughshares: placed sideways on the front beam, their purpose is help the machine to penetrate unploughed soil; ISO 2 cat three-point attachment with hydraulic lifting: the PTO that comes leaves the back of the gear box makes it possible to operate a seeding machine that can be raised above the tiller when it is being transported or manoeuvred MACHINE DESCRIPTION The VALENTINI rotary tiller, mod. Maxi Squalo 4200, is a hydraulically folding mounted agricultural machine, earth refining and seedbed preparation to complete the work of the plough. The tiller examined, with a theoretical working width of 4,20 m, is part of the Maxi Squalo series consisting of four models with variable width from 4.2 m to 5.2 m. The soil is tilled by 96 curved tines arranged in groups of 6 per flange rotating on a horizontal axis; further soil refinement and levelling is performed by leveller casings and packer rollers hinged to the back of the frame. 5 Figure 1 Picture of the tested machine and its components: 1) three-point tractor linkage support; 2) upper link connection; 3) lower link connection 4) cross shafts for transmission of power to the side transmission assemblies; 5) cardan shaft connecting to the tractor s PTO; 6) side cardan shaft protection; 7) tiller tools; 8) rear roller position; 9) hydraulic cylinders for roller working height adjustment; 10) front guard; 11) identification plate; 12) side slides. 5 TEST CONDITIONS TRACTOR USED The tiller was coupled to a four-wheel drive tractor with the following characteristics: rated power kw overall mass 9730 kg linkage cat.3 ISO The rotation speed at the power take off used for the operation of the rotors was set at 1000 rpm when the drive shaft turned at 1903 rpm. TEST GROUND Tests were performed on slightly undulating ground that had been ploughed previously at a depth of 0.40 m with a rise of 0.18 m. Before tilling was carried out the following was determined: relative humidity (from 0 to 0.2 m and from 0.2 to 0.4 m in depth), the average apparent density and the average resistance to soil penetration (from 0 to 0.4 m in depth) (tab. 1). TEST RESULTS During the tests, after establishing the best gear for the tractor (4 th ) compatibly with the conditions for working the test soil, engaging the double drive and differential lock, moving the accelerator lever to the position of maximum delivery, the functional and operational characteristics (referring to the hectare) were established and are shown in table 2. The results of the analysis of the breaking up of the soil by the tiller are shown in figure 2. The implement was fitted with a completely closed rear levelling casing and caged rollers in order to prepare the seedbed first sweep. The specific average power output was the same at 1.04 kw/m. cm (per operating width and working depth meter on the worked terrain), while the average specific force was 1.82 dan/m.cm (per meter of effective width and centimetre of depth on the worked terrain) with very fast operation. Tractor slip was positive, and was any way kept with in absolutely negligible limits. It can also be seen from table 2 how the theoretical working width has been used to 98,8%, while the depth of the worked level is m 0.17 with soil settling at m From the examination in figure 2 it can be seen that the passage of the tiller over ploughed soil has meant outstanding refinement. The relative index in fact went from 0.48 of the ploughed soil to 0.82 of the tilled soil with a clod reduction of 41.7%; furthermore it enabled the elimination of the large clod classes to be eliminated and the aggregates less than 10 mm to 48% of the total of the mass of the crashed soil. The consequent seedbed quality index (ratio between mass of clods with diameters 10 mm / mass of clods with diameters > 10 mm) was 0.93 thereby guaranteeing a good substrata for seeding and subsequent germination. The joint effect of the rotary implements and the rear casing levelled the soil well and considerably reduced the roughness of the surface producing soil levelling of 85,0%. 5/8

The values are to be considered valid for working conditions identical to those seen during the tests carried out on the "Maxi Squalo 4200". REMARKS ON FUNCTIONALITY The Valentini Maxi Squalo 4200 rotary tiller has proved to perform an optimal working of the soil in a single sweep while working at the maximum working depth, on very tough silt-clay soil with high degree of surface clods. The implement show a high soil refinement index and an excellent degree of soil levelling. Therefore good results can be obtained on difficult soil conditions. Coupling to a 176 kw tractor appeared to be correct for the difficult test conditions, considering the constant power requirement at the tractor s power take off and the low power output necessary for the traction of the implement, given the pushing action of the rotor. Nonetheless a tractor with a lower power output, as indicated by the manufacturer may be more suitable particularly when the soil is lighter. RECOMMENDATIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS The rotary tiller is provided with a multilingual user and maintenance manual in compliance with current regulations. ROAD CIRCULATION For the purposes of the Italian Highway Code the machine is classed as a mounted agricultural machine and is therefore an integral part of the tractor (art. 57, Law Decree n. 285 dated 30/04/1992), registration is not required and it may circulate according to the tractor s mass and pivot ratios and the necessary signs. SAFETY CHECK The machine is fitted with the CE mark, an identification plate and safety pictograms as required by ISO standard 11684:1995 and is provided with an user and maintenance manual and declaration of conformity. The manufacturer declares that the machine conforms with the technical standard: UNI EN 708:1998; EN 708/A1:1999; EN 1553:1999. From the examinations effected and no discrepancies were found with what the manufacturer had declared. The relevant documentation is deposited in the papers. MODELS IN THE SAME SERIES From tests carried out on the Valentini Maxi Squalo 4200 tiller and on the basis of the results in table 2, it can be assumed that under same test conditions and for a different number of flanges, the values shown in table three can be obtained. Table 4 shows the other tiller models for which an extension to this test report has been issued..
