Training Needs Assessment for the Water Service Providers within the Tana Water Service Board. This assignment involved assessing the training needs of the staff of 28 Water Service Providers (mainly the newly formed water companies with the Tana Water Service Board area of jurisdiction. KENYA, July December 2009, Athi Water Services Board. Preparation Phase of the CPC for Fasie and Kihiu Mwiri Water and Sanitation CBO s in Thika East District. This assignment involved carrying out resources mapping activities, development of specific project plans and training, Project documentation and conducting of CBO meetings. KENYA, August 2008 to February 2009: Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge. Improvement of water treatment capacity and rehabilitating the distribution system pipelines. This assignment involved investigation, design and construction and supervision of sedimentation tank and removal of iron and manganese deposits in the water distribution system. This assignment involved conducting CBO member meetings, establishment of technical groups and carrying out detailed survey and design for the Kyuna CBO water supply and sanitation project comprising of spring intakes, distribution system and facilities. KENYA, November 2007 February 2008, Team Leader, Design of and implementation of Chumvi Community Water Project, Daiga Location, Laikipia East. This assignment involved carrying out design and supervision of construction of a 20km pipe water supply system from an existing source including water distribution facilities. KENYA, May 2007 June 2007, Team Leader, Technical Assessment of the Kisayani Community Water Project, Kibwezi. This assignment involved assessment and measurements of performance Kisayani Community water supply project in Kibwezi. KENYA, November May 2007, Team Leader, International Livestock Research Institute. Desludging of Waste stabilization ponds. The assignment involved de-sludging of four wastewater stabilization ponds using mechanical and manual methods, prior and post measurements of influent and effluent wastewater quality and construction of chlorine contact tank and doser for disinfecting the effluent. KENYA, April - May 2007, Team Leader, Technical Design of Water Treatment Plant for the Reformed Institute of Theological Training, Eldoret. This assignment involved survey and design of water treatment plant for the Institution obtaining its water from River Kipsinende in Eldoret. 7

8 KENYA, June - August 2006, Team Leader, WWF/WSUP, WSUP Pilot Project Feasibility Study The assignment involves carrying out a feasibility study on provision of water supply and sanitation services for Mirera- Karagita area of Naivasha Town. The project involves assessing the hydro-geological data for the area and assessing borehole production, distribution system design and environmental impact assessment for the preferred option. In addition operation and maintenance plans for use by the community were also prepared. KENYA, November - December 2005, Team member, MoW&I/MEWASS/JICA, Preliminary Study on Meru Sewerage System. This assignment involves the identification of the immediate and future priority sewerage improvement issues in Meru town. It also requires us to formulate a preliminary sewerage improvement plan for the town as well suggesting ways of transferring knowledge on sewerage improvement planning technology to the related staff of the Water Service Provider Meru water and Sewerage Services (MEWASS). KENYA, September 2005, Team member, MoW&I/WSTF, Training for Thairira water project Kajiado District.. This assignment involved training the water project community, project management committee and project employees on technology options in water supply and operation and maintenance using training manual prepared on the basis of participatory learning approach (PLA). KENYA, January-April 2005, Team member, BTC/WUASP, Establishment of sustainable management models for Community water supply and sanitation schemes. 8

9 The aim of the assignment was to assess the technical, institutional and financial status of community water supply and sanitation schemes namely Yatta Canal, Wamunyu and Mulima projects. The institutional and organizational structure was established with full participation of the community. I was responsible for the technical status assessment of the water supply system, operation and maintenance, improvement options, costing and workshop presentation of the immediate and future development plans. KENYA July-August 2005, International Livestock Research Institute. Oxidation Pond Wastewater Quality analysis This assignment involved measurement of the chemical and microbiological quality characteristics of influent and effluent wastewater for the oxidation ponds at the Institute, Other tasks involved determination of flow rates, hydraulic and organic loading rates for the ponds, BOD and bacterial removal rates and treatment efficiency. It also included comparison to standards for disposal of effluents to the environment. KENYA November December 2004, Lead Expert, Environmental Audit and Assessment, Various Industries This assignment included preparation of environmental audits for factories such as Labchem Industries, Vikings Limited, Allied Plumbers and Jantech Engineering Limited all in Nairobi and Marion Schools at Kahawa West, Nairobi and Kiambu. It involved assessing the environmental degradation concerns in the premises and preparation of environmental management plans. KENYA, April-August 2004, Team member, DANIDA, Appraisal of 30 small scale rural water supply and sanitation schemes. The aim of the assignment was to assess the technical, social and financial feasibility for improving or expanding the existing projects. The task entailed assessing the economic, financial and institutional capacity of the community to operate the scheme on a 9

10 sustainable basis. The project also included assessing water availability and demand including hydro-geological and geophysical information reports in areas with no surface water. Project implementation schedules including bill of quantities for preferred options, business plans and environmental management plans were prepared with full participation of community members. Financial proposal for the community was also established. Other important considerations were: empowerment of women in decision making; health, hygiene and sanitation; good governance; sustainability and environmental issues of the water supply systems KENYA, September-November 2003, Team Member, JICA/MOLG, Preparatory Study on the Naivasha Water and Sewerage System. The assignment was to assess the existing water supply and sewerage system and recommend improvements. The consultant was also required to recommend institutional and financial t structure for the management and operation and maintenance of the water supply and sewerage system. I was responsible for data collection, assessment of water demand and unit consumption rates, distribution system expansion design, costing, report writing and workshop presentation on the current water supply situation and future projections. KENYA, March 1996 to December 2002 PLAN KENYA, Feasibility study and design of the Kanjoo community Irrigation Project, Meru North District; Kinna community water project, Isiolo District; Njukiri/Nthambo community Irrigation Project, Embu District; Ngeca Cluster Irrigation project, Mbeere District; Goliba-Magogoni irrigation project, Thika District. The assignments entailed carrying out technical, social and financial feasibility study of the community projects, detailed design, BOQs, engineer s estimate and supervision of construction. KENYA, June 1997 August 1997, Kenya Re, Shanzu Development, Mombasa This assignment entailed designing the water reticulation system for the residential estate and involved using water demand consumption units and population to establish future water consumption for sizing pipes and appurtenances as per design manual. KENYA, August January 1997, Department of Civil Engineering, UON, World Bank, Water supply and sanitation situation in the informal sector. This engagement involved data acquisition for the situation analysis to identify the gaps and need for water and sanitation facilities in the informal sector specifically in Nairobi.
