Part Time: 21 hours per week Salary 18, to 20, ( 30, to 33, full time equivalent) (subject to skills and experience) Contract Type Permanent Job Purpose The Education Officer will work with the Director of Charitable Operations to develop and deliver an action plan that disseminates Big C s Education Vision and Strategy. Firstly, they will ensure that the general public of Norfolk and Waveney have a better understanding of cancer, its impact and how to maximise their health and wellbeing, as well as that of those they care for. The role will also be responsible for making sure Big C staff possess the knowledge and skillset needed to enable this. Secondly, they will raise awareness of career opportunities and requirements and stimulate career aspirations in the research, healthcare and third sector working environment. The Education Officer will work with internal and external stakeholders to develop positive partnerships (organisations) and networks, working closely with schools, institutions and healthcare professionals. Together, they will provide learning opportunities, training and support. This will be linked to Big C s vision and strategy, tailored to the role/relevant to the audience, reflective of national and local policy, guidelines and agreed good practice as well as being measured for outcomes and impact.
2 Main Duties Working with the Director of Charitable Operations to develop and agree an action plan that delivers and disseminates the agreed vision and strategy for Big C Education. Engaging and working with internal and external stakeholders to support the development and implementation of the strategy s action plan. Knowledge/skill acquisition relating to health and wellbeing through: o Supporting the development and implementation of an education area on the Big C website. o Supporting the development and dissemination of education packs for target audiences to use independently to help improve knowledge among local communities. o Supporting the development and implementation of a resource toolkit for those undertaking education sessions on behalf of Big C to help them deliver learning activities. o Supporting the development and implementation of an assessment and training programme about cancer for our staff, appropriate to their role and any knowledge/skill gaps. Raising awareness of career opportunities in healthcare, research and third sector through: o Raising awareness of summer bursaries/studentships/medical electives. o Raising awareness of career options related to cancer in science, healthcare and the third sector. o Identifying opportunities for work experience internally and externally to Big C. o Developing a resource toolkit for those undertaking career awareness sessions on behalf of Big C. o Developing an area relating to career opportunities within the education area of the Big C website. Ongoing development of partnerships and networks with identified partners (organisations/key individuals) and updating of CRM database. Provision of research, information and written reports as required. Undertaking personal development and attending any relevant training. Undertake such other duties appropriate to the role. All Big C post holders are responsible for General Working to the policies of Big C. Promoting equal opportunities and diversity within all aspects of their work. Complying with health and safety regulations. Carrying out additional duties where appropriate which may be allocated from time to time by the Chief Executive. 3 Person Specification: These elements will be assessed through shortlisting and interview process Assessment Areas Education and Qualifications Experience, Skills, knowledge and Abilities Essential Good level of general education. Degree in Social Science or a healthrelated professional qualification. Learning and development or teaching qualification. Relative and recent continuous personal development. OR Significant and relevant work experience in community wellbeing engagement projects or similar health educational/ informational programmes. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate confidently and manage relationships at all levels and influence behaviour change. Good written communication. Experience of designing and delivering related education and training programmes. Project management skills. High level of customer service skills. Ability to interpret and communicate complex information. Strong organisational and time management skills, ability to plan and prioritise own workload effectively and efficiently. Flexible approach to and ability to cope with change. The ability to relate to, motivate and empathise with a range of people from different backgrounds. A demonstrable respect for equality and diversity and the ability to promote equal opportunities practices. The ability to balance a busy workload, completing work Desirable Relative postgraduate qualification. Project management qualification. Experience within the field of health, education, social services or/and the third sector. Understanding of cancer, its impact and how to maximise health and wellbeing. Experience of working with a multi-agency approach. Experience of working within the field of research. Use of Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM), ideally Raisers Edge.

5 About Big C Big C is a much loved local charity with a proud history. In 1980, two young men from Norfolk found themselves with cancer and having to travel to London or Cambridge for treatment, often finding this journey harder than the treatment itself. They vowed the people of Norfolk & Waveney would have access to the best treatment and support in their local areas. Thirty-five years on and this is being realised more than ever; with over 20million being raised since "The Big C Appeal" began. Today, our Big C Centres are there for anyone affected by cancer providing first-hand support, information and a listening ear to those who need it. For tomorrow, Big C funds local research into cancer and invests in vital diagnostic and medical equipment and facilities in local hospitals, bringing better care for local people, closer to where they live. Together we are working to improve the lives of those affected by cancer in Norfolk & Waveney. Our vision is to enable Norfolk and Waveney to be a centre of excellence for the provision of cancer services, and to contribute to the international reputation for excellence in cancer research locally. We are dedicated to the fight against cancer and its effect on the individual and the family. To this end we aim to promote partnerships between the statutory, private, and voluntary sectors, which together will develop first class cancer research and services. We will become the go to organisation for the people of Norfolk and Waveney when cancer support and information services are required.
