1 Director of Services and Influencing Background This is a pivotal role in the organisation taking responsibility for key strategic initiatives and driving the organisation forward through a period of growth. This role also takes responsibility for contributing to the development and implementation of overall strategy, operating policies and procedures, team development and representing the Charity on external bodies and at events. In May 2015, we launched our new, ambitious five year strategy Defeating brain tumours, which has two clear goals to double survival and halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Services and Influencing will have responsibility for leading the successful execution and development of strategic plans for three of our six strategic initiatives: Improving life today providing information and support to help every person to navigate the system and improve their quality of life. Equal access to treatment and care ensuring that every person with a brain tumour has the same access to high quality treatment, care and information regardless of postcode, age or tumour type Every patient is a research patient making sure that every patient is able to contribute to research and clinical trials, to give them faster access to treatments, better care and the opportunity to help defeat this disease. You will also play a key part in the delivery of the initiatives to unite the community in defeating brain tumours and in ensuring earlier and more accurate diagnosis. You will be a strategic and operational thinker with a collaborative mind set and the courage to investigate bold new ideas and pioneering approaches to developing activities that impact to make a positive difference for people affected by a brain tumour. Brain tumours in the UK: the facts Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 Over 100,000 people have a primary brain tumour in the UK 500 children and teenagers are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year The Brain Tumour Charity is at the forefront of the fight to defeat brain tumours and is making a difference every day to the lives of people with a brain tumour and their families. We fund pioneering research to increase survival, raise awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours and provide support and information for everyone affected to improve quality of life. You will possess the skills to build strong relationships both internally and externally with key stakeholders including leaders in the policy and medical fields, working in an innovative, dynamic and demanding environment.

2 Job purpose This is a strategic and pivotal role that is responsible for the strategic and operational management of three teams: Support and Information; Healthcare Engagement and the Policy and Public Affairs Team. The post-holder will: Develop and nurture relationships with key influencers, including political stakeholders, healthcare professionals, the NHS and other organisations to raise awareness and credibility and influence change Ensure the adoption of a high quality patient pathway Review, develop and implement a support and information strategy that meets the goals of our strategy Lead the development and delivery of high impact influencing strategies Lead the development and implementation of the Charity s advocacy strategies Lead the development of key strategic partnerships to deliver change and services. Key accountabilities 1. Lead strategic initiatives through functional and cross-functional project teams, providing leadership and vision to these teams. 2. Establish effective relationships with strategic partners, policy makers, healthcare professionals, healthcare institutions and others, working closely with the CEO, other senior colleagues and board members, to help influence engagement with the Charity s objectives. 3. Lead and develop an organisation-wide support and information strategy that is needs led for everyone affected by a brain tumour (people with high grade tumours, low grade tumours, children with brain tumours and those facing the end of their life) and takes a digital first approach. 4. Influence the adoption of a high quality patient pathway across all neuroscience centres (adult and paediatric) across the UK. 5. Identify and oversee the engagement of national and local health commissioners to influence policy makers. 6. Monitor political, policy and advocacy trends and developments, identifying opportunities to grow the Charity s influence, considering the strategic impact of new trends and communicating appropriately. 7. Keep up to date with health and welfare developments and issues relating to people living with a brain tumour; sharing best practice and knowledge in a timely manner across the organisation. 8. Identify gaps and opportunities in The Brain Tumour Charity s representation on external bodies. 9. Identify and develop opportunities to work in partnership with other providers that can meet the needs of people with a brain tumour. 10. Ensure every brain tumour patient has the opportunity to take part in research through the identification and promotion of clinical trials and research involvement network. 11. Develop, agree and implement effective outreach strategies to ensure more people with a brain tumour and their families and carers access our services and are able to take part in research. 12. Significantly develop our digital presence, services and interaction in terms of support, information and advocacy for and with those affected by brain tumours. 13. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, take collective responsibility for the leadership and management of the organisation. 14. Keep up to date on current voluntary sector, the brain tumour sector and general health policy to ensure the Charity becomes and remains a leader in its field, monitoring implications for and impact on the Charity s influencing approach and political positioning. 15. Define, monitor and champion quality standards (accredited where relevant) in support and information across the charity; enhancing and implementing lean and scalable procedures and best practice guides.

3 16. Ensure the efficient management of resources and expenditure including effective budget preparation, planning, monitoring and review. 17. Accountable for the analysis and evaluation of performance information, monitoring and reporting against objectives, outcomes and KPIs and that accurate records are maintained on the Charity s CRM. 18. Give talks and media interviews about the work of the Charity and proactively seek out opportunities. The post holder will also Contribute to achieving the overall objectives of The Brain Tumour Charity. Undertake any additional and ad hoc tasks as required. Recruit, develop and manage team members Participate in team meetings and other meetings as required. Provide written reports to the CEO as required. Represent The Charity externally in a professional manner. Work within an equal opportunities framework. Comply at all times with the Charity s Health and Safety policy. 4 Person specification Essential Desirable Qualifications Educated to degree standard in social sciences or other relevant subject Higher degree Counselling, advice work or advocacy skills accreditation Experience A minimum five year s senior management experience preferably within the third sector, to include experience in: Developing and implementing strategy and delivery of organisational change and impact Leading on one or more of the following functions policy, support, information, health service delivery Line management of staff in a health or social care background Substantial experience of developing, implementing and managing a diverse range of information, advocacy and support services including digitally Successful experience of evaluating and improving services Experience of managing and developing services delivered in partnership with volunteers, beneficiaries and third party organisations Proven experience of policy, advocacy and media work Proven experience and understanding of online communication and data management, analysis and evaluation to meet organisational needs A proven track record of success in leading and managing a team of comparable size and complexity to deliver high quality results to deadlines Experience of operating in a medical or bereavement setting Experience of working in a senior team to develop, communicate and implement business plans Experience of managing financial budgets Knowledge A good understanding of the UK healthcare systems and medical research Knowledge of health, oncology or neuro-oncology tumours an advantage Knowledge/understanding of patient/carer welfare rights an advantage Proven knowledge of cancer services, cancer information and issues facing those affected Skills and Abilities Ability to convey complex scientific information to a range of audiences Confident written and spoken communication skills with proven highly developed listening skills Proven strong interpersonal skills and the ability to show empathy and understanding to individual patients and their families as well as the gravitas to strengthen relationships
