1 CITY OF SHEFFIELD JOB DESCRIPTION CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE S SERVICE The Authority / service is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment SERVICE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES POST TITLE YOUTH JUSTICE SUPPORT WORKER SALARY RANGE Grade 4 RESPONSIBLE TO YOUTH JUSTICE TEAM MANAGER RESPONSIBLE FOR NIL STAFF HOLIDAY AND SICKNESS RELIEF PURPOSE OF JOB YOUTH JUSTICE SUPPORT WORKER To provide support and assistance to young people engaged by the Youth Offending Service in a range of activities such as community reparation, group and activity provision etc. and to support young people in activate participation in their intervention plan ensuring compliance with intervention plan arrangements and their safety at all times. To work on an as required basis in accordance with service need (zero hours contract)

2 JOB DESCRIPTION FOR POST OF:- YOUTH JUSTICE SUPPORT WORKER SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The post holder must at all times carry out his/her responsibilities within the spirit of the City Council s Policies and Procedures, in particular the Council Policies on Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety and also, within the framework of the Children Act 2004 and annually agreed National Occupational Standards. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES To contribute towards and participate in programmes of intervention designed to prevent re-offending, individually and in group work settings To undertake such other duties, training and/or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this job. To complete a summary report of the young person s behaviour/progress whilst engaged within the supported activity. To maintain the highest standard regarding confidentiality and integrity. To pass on any information that affects or potentially affects the safety or security of themselves, and any other person. To participate in regular supervision meetings at the Youth Offending Service. Contribute towards, and participate in programmes of intervention designed to prevent offending/re-offending and other negative outcomes both individually and in group settings. Maintain up to date records of cases using appropriate management information systems Work with parents where appropriate, in individual or group work settings Work with victims of youth offending and contribute to the promotion of restorative justice Promote equality and diversity within the service

3 CASE MANAGEMENT Provide support to case managers through overseeing and engaging young people in interventions and constructive programmes e.g. reparation placement, education provision RELATIONSHIPS Provision of information and reports on cases and the assessed needs of service users to Youth Justice Service Staff. DECISION MAKING Decisions affecting the service users ability to engage with programmes and interventions KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ICT, Report Writing and Communications skills Development of the above knowledge and skills to a high standard through CPD and experience of handling complex cases, FINANCE No financial responsibility WORKING CONDITIONS Flexible Working Available to work on a session basis and as required and arranged by Youth Justice case managers and authorised by Youth Justice Team Managers with a minimum expectation of attending one session workers supervision meeting each month. Working hours include working between 8am and 9pm over 7 days a week. Working Conditions Primarily providing support to young people within education provision, undertaking reparation placements and supporting young people in group work setting. In these cases there will have been a risk assessment as the service user will be known to the service. Can include outdoor working. Physical Effort Minimal physical effort required. Physical Dexterity Normal requirements for precision and speed associated with office based duties.

4 Health and Safety As applicable to individual environmental setting Emotional Context The role may involve dealing service users under stressful and emotionally charged situations that could include complaints regarding procedures and performance, national inquiries, and other factors that impact upon the Directorate/Council Performance. 5 CITY OF SHEFFIELD CHILDREN YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES DIRECTORATE PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR THE POST OF: YOUTH JUSTICE SUPPORT WORKER EXPERIENCE HOW ASSESSED Direct work in either a paid or voluntary capacity, with young people and their families. KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System. Knowledge of individual and group work techniques appropriate for engaging young offenders. Awareness of City Council Policies on safeguarding. Knowledge of the causes and consequences of crime and effective practice. Knowledge of child and adolescent development. SKILLS Ability to promote and work in an anti-oppressive and antidiscriminatory manner. Good communication skills. /Assessment Ability to engage, motivate and challenge socially excluded adolescents to achieve a change in their thinking and behaviour. Ability to support the monitoring and evaluation of performance and effectiveness in others and within teams
