1 Actors Theatre of Louisville Posted October, 2016 Position: Reports To: Department: FLSA: Costume Director Production Manager Costumes Exempt About Actors Theatre of Louisville: Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Tony-Award winning State Theatre of Kentucky, seeks qualified and passionate applicants for the position of Costume Director. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Les Waters and Managing Director Kevin E. Moore, Actors Theatre serves to unlock human potential, build community and enrich quality of life by engaging people in theatre that reflects the wonder and complexity of our time. Actors Theatre presents almost 350 performances annually across three theatres and delivers a broad range of programming impacting local and national audiences with a particular focus on new play development influencing the field of American theatre. Programs include classical repertory and contemporary work through the Brown-Forman Series, holiday favorites cherished as annual traditions, the Humana Festival of New American Plays influencing the canon of American theatre, an Education program where students see and make plays, and a theatre training program, the Professional Training Company. Summary of Position: The Costume Director will direct the production of costumes for Actors productions and events and manage the daily operation of costume department facilities and personnel. Essential Functions: Planning: Determine short and long term departmental goals and implement their execution. Determine the budgetary needs for the costume department; Create and submit yearly budget for approval. Ensure that all expenses stay within budgeted amounts for each production/ fiscal year. Ensure that costume expenses are recorded and reported according to established ATL practices. Determine and maintain ATL costume production quality standards. Create and manage seasonal costume department production schedule.

2 Advise Production Management in the determination of costume staff contract start dates, designer residency, designer due dates for sketches and fabrics and other costume related scheduling. Advise Production Management in the determination of costume and wig requirements for co-production agreements. Personnel: Advocate for the Costume shop and its staff. Determine costume department staffing needs; Recruit, interview and hire costume personnel. Train, supervise and assign work to costume personnel (costume shop, crafts, wardrobe and wigs). Ensure that costume personnel work within specified contract dates and allotted hours. Ensure that weekly payroll is submitted by established deadlines. Conduct semi-annual individual performance evaluations with costume staff. Facility: Determine spatial layout and organization of costume department spaces. Ensure a safe, clean and comfortable work environment for costume personnel and actors. Ensure that equipment and supplies are properly maintained. Report any facilities or security related issues to the Operations Department. Costume Production: Determine a course of action for all costume and wig/hair pieces, in collaboration with the Costume Designer. Assign all work to be completed. Ensure that the costume shop is provided with the materials and information needed to complete assigned tasks. Ensure that all costumes are produced according to the designer s specifications within established budgetary and time parameters. Obtain bids for and coordinate the outsourcing of costumes, as needed. Attend fittings as necessary to ensure that costumes are being completed according to ATL costume quality standards. Attend Production Meetings. Rehearsal Process: Attend all technical rehearsals in which costumes are being worn. Ensure that appropriate personnel is scheduled for technical rehearsals. Ensure that costume, wig, and wardrobe staff are provided with the necessary information and paperwork to perform their assigned tasks.

3 Ensure that costume notes are compiled, communicated to and completed by costume shop staff. Ensure that all actors are reasonably comfortable in their costumes. Performance: Monitor performance reports and ensure the completion of any notes listed therein. Communicate regularly with the Wardrobe Supervisor and Wig Master to ensure that there are no outstanding maintenance needs. Post-Production: Ensure that all costume paperwork and photo-documentation are compiled and stored for archival purposes. Ensure that all costumes are cleaned after the last performance. Ensure that repairs are completed and that all garments are labeled, prior to returning costumes to costume stock. Conduct costume department wrap-up meetings to examine departmental processes and allow staff the opportunity to voice their perspective. Costume Stock/Rentals: Determine and implement costume rental policies and pricing. Determine and implement storage plan for costumes, shoes, hats and accessories. Develop and implement electronic costume organizational and tracking system. Ensure that costume assets are stored in a manner that ensures security and longevity of use. Other: Conduct weekly costume department meetings. Attend Production Department Manager s meetings and full company meetings. Provide written wrap-up reports to Production Manager; attend theatre-wide wrap-up meetings. Provide costume support for any other company departments as assigned. Other theatre needs as assigned by the Production Manager or Artistic Director. Maintain collegial relationships with fellow costume professionals nationwide. Keep informed about industry standards and new products. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of costume history. Comprehensive knowledge of costume construction: draping, flat-patterning, tailoring, sewing and crafts. Comprehensive knowledge of costume care techniques and products. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

4 Ability to create and manage yearly costumes budget. Ability to determine and maintain Actors costume production quality standards. Ability to create and implement long and short term planning. Ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude in times of stress. Ability to unite and collaborate with staff, stakeholders, community leaders and vendors. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor s degree in theatre (or related field) or comparable professional experience Five (5) years of costume management at a comparable professional performing arts company or industrial costume shop; Professional costuming experience at all levels is desirable: draping, patternmaking, tailoring, sewing, crafts, wardrobe, shopping, design and management Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel & Outlook. Must work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends. Must be highly motivated and a self-starter. Must successfully pass a background screening. Preferred Qualifications: Budgeting, accounting and record keeping. Proficiency in the operation of all costume equipment and tools. Working knowledge of costume equipment maintenance and repair. Compensation: Compensation will be competitive with similar positions throughout the country. The range of benefits includes medical and dental insurance, long-term and short-term disability insurance, paid time off and a 403(b) retirement plan.
