1 TECHNICAL MANAGER RECRUITMENT Background Information Hoxton Hall is an atmospheric 150 year old grade II* listed Music Hall Theatre (one of only four Music Halls remaining in the UK) with adjoining music rooms and recording space, rehearsal rooms, dance studio, meeting rooms and art workshops. Hoxton Hall also runs a creative industry workspace called Hoxton Works. Hoxton Hall is committed to providing quality arts experiences which engage, inspire and transform young people and audiences as well as promoting community cohesion and contributing to the vibrant cultural life of residents in Shoreditch, Hackney and East London. Beyond Caretaking Hoxton Hall has completed phase two of a three phase 5.5m capital plan to restore, conserve and modernise our 150 year old grade II* listed Music Hall. Phase two has increased our capacity by reopening our second balcony and increasing our technical capabilities. Our archive is now digitally accessible with heritage and archive interpretation work A Collection of Small Choices, sound scape and new website. Performance Hoxton Hall brings communities together through entertainment. A renewed building brings a renewed opportunity for the Hall s connection to professional arts activity alongside its extensive participatory programmes. Hoxton Hall is a space for artist development, a vital incubation space to make work in a supportive environment; creating bridges for participants to transition into emerging artists. A programme of contemporary variety that allows Hoxton Hall to once again take its rightful place in the heritage of London theatre. Giving audiences an opportunity to pick and mix their entertainment experience in a multimedia, multi-choice entertainment market. Participation Hoxton Hall is based in Hackney, one of the most deprived boroughs in London and the UK. Hoxton Hall is a youth hub working with 80% BAME communities, with a focus on Young Londoners from 7 to 19 years old. We develop creative projects which achieve our vision, respond to individual and local community needs. Hoxton Street Management (HSM) provides professional representation for young people to develop careers in performing arts. Enabling direct employment within the creative industries. Entrepreneur Our other commercial ventures (Hoxton Works and events and hires of our buildings) generate over 100k for the organisation. Hoxton Works is managed by a wholly owned subsidiary company.

2 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Technical and Buildings Manager Job Objective: To oversee the smooth running of all technical aspects of visiting, in-house and co-productions in addition to other elements of the Hoxton Hall programme. The role will also manage the maintenance of Hoxton Hall and Hoxton Works and contribute to the youth arts programme in the development and training of young people. Reporting to: General Manager Responsible for: Assistant Technician (Trainee) Freelance Technicians Departmental Responsibilities To be responsible for the effective control of production budgets and annual production costs according to budgets set in consultation with the General Manager. To be responsible for the provision, control, logging, maintenance and renewal of all technical and production equipment and developing a strategic overview of all technical resources pertaining to the company and the building. To line-manage the Assistant Technician, ensuring work schedules are produced in advance, and their time is used effectively. To support the development of the Assistant Technician and Youth Arts Participants, where required, and oversee training programmes where necessary. To maximise the life of technical equipment through regular inspection, service and maintenance, appropriate security arrangements, and supervision of other users. To organise and maintain a pool of casual technicians for get-ins, technical support in performance and get-outs who can be called as appropriate ensuring the most cost-effective use of staff time. To ensure that all casual staff comply with the company s equal opportunities, child protection and health and safety policies at all times. Hires and Productions To be the technical contact point for, and provide technical advice and support to both visiting and in house performers/companies to Hoxton Hall. To liaise with and co-ordinate site visits for all productions as necessary. To ensure that all companies are made to feel welcome in the building and that they receive the highest levels of technical support available, including continuity of staffing. To ensure that visiting personnel understand and work to house rules, and organise inductions as appropriate with the General Manager.

3 To work closely with the designers and directors of Hoxton Hall productions to ensure the highest possible production standards are met within agreed budgets. To arrange and attend all production and post-production evaluation meetings for in-house shows. To manage all hires and loans of the company s technical equipment. To liaise with the General Manager and Theatre Manager (and other staff as appropriate) to discuss technical requirements for events and FOH matters. To ensure effective and adequate administrative systems are set up and maintained in order to manage the technical schedule for Hoxton Hall, companies and artists. Premises To install and/or supervise the installation of all new equipment into the theatre, and beyond. To be responsible for the organisation and maintenance of production areas at Hoxton Hall. To act as the Licensee s representative in production areas and ensuring that all spaces are ready for relevant inspection by the local authority and other statutory bodies. To monitor all stage equipment in order to ensure appropriate operating standards and compliance with licensing requirements. To ensure full maintenance and PAT checks on Hoxton Hall s electrical equipment are carried out as required. To liaise with the General Manager and Theatre and Event Manager on the maintenance programme for the buildings and ensure agreed work is carried out To work in conjunction with staff on adequate record-keeping for the building e.g. maintenance logs, equipment and contract work conducted. To work in conjunction with General Manager and Theatre and Events Manager on annual maintenance week (e.g. alarms testing, fire safety testing, licensing etc.) To provide additional support for maintenance of the building, where able and required. Health and Safety To keep abreast of current Health and Safety legislation. To ensure all personnel working in the theatre adhere to the venue s Health and Safety policy. To carry out risk assessments of all productions. To act as a Fire Marshall and carrying out relevant fire safety procedures and measures relating to production areas of the building. To work in conjunction with Operations team on all matters linked to Health and Safety. To communicate regularly with the General Manager about health and safety management issues.

4 General To act as an ambassador for Hoxton hall. To contribute to the development of the artistic policy and programming at Hoxton Hall, with particular regard to the technical operations of our productions. To attend and contribute at regular staff meetings. To prepare written reports for the management committee as required. To work actively within Hoxton Hall s Equal Opportunities and Access policies and to ensure that all technical staff and users working within JL are aware of the requirements of these policies. To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the General Manager. 5 Person Specification Experience Skills Knowledge Personal Qualities Essential Criteria At least three years relevant experience in technical production Experience of working across art forms, in particular music and theatre Experience of managing budgets Skilled in the following key areas: lighting sound and audio visual Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent organisation skills with an ability to prioritise and meet deadlines Excellent interpersonal, relationship building and networking skills Excellent numeracy skills Ability to negotiate and work with a wide range of people Ability to work calmly under pressure to a high standard Proven people management skills Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office and ability to produce spreadsheets and reports. Knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation Knowledge of the principles of equality and diversity and the ability to apply these in the workplace Able to work flexible hours including evening and weekend work A passion for work in a busy arts and community environment Confident and self-motivated Good team player A commitments to treat all colleagues and clients with equal respect Ability to multi-task Willing to be flexible and undertake different duties as required Desirable Criteria Experience of working in a producing theatre Experience of working with young people Experience of maintain buildings Knowledge and ability to use CAD software. Ability to support the development and training of staff. PAT trained Knowledge if electrical theory and / or City and Guild 2360 Full clean driving licence

6 Other Information Hours: Salary: 35 hours a week No overtime is payable. Hoxton Hall operates a TOIL system. Given the nature of the post regular evening and weekend work will be required. 26,000 to 28,000 per annum depending on experience Probationary Period: 4 months Holidays: Deadline: Interviews: 25 days per year plus bank holidays 10:00 am 11the June 20 th June Application Process: All applicants must complete the application form.
