3 Welcome from our Director of Programmes Dear Applicant, Mary s Meals is a fast-growing international charity, currently providing more than one million hungry and impoverished children in 15 countries with a nutritious meal every school day. As Impact and Learning Officer, you will be responsible for leading on data analysis to support the implementation of Mary s Meals Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Strategy. You ll be joining a newly created and growing directorate and will also support the coordination of research to promote and support an organisational culture of learning and an enhanced understanding of the impact of Mary s Meals work, collating research findings and delivering training to build the capacity of global MEL staff. With 61 million children out of school around the world and a further 66 million attending school so hungry they re not able to concentrate and learn, our work is only just beginning. By contributing to the work of Mary s Meals, you will become part of a worldwide movement of people who will not accept that any child in this world of plenty should endure a day without a meal. 5 Role overview Supports the implementation of Mary s Meals Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Strategy through the coordination of research and data analysis. Promotes an organisational culture of learning and an enhanced understanding of the impact of our work through reporting and sharing of research results. Supports improvements in Mary s Meals MEL systems, and builds the capacity of global MEL staff through the provision of training and advisory support. 5

6 Duties and responsibilities Key Activities Impact Support implementation of the organisation s monitoring and evaluation strategy. Lead on the analysis of MEL data by verifying, assessing and analysing quantitative and qualitative data from a range of sources. Provide guidance and support to impact assessment and other research projects across the organisation, including supporting research planning and providing capacity building support and training to MEL staff. Conduct research across Mary s Meals programme countries, including conducting focus groups and surveys and gathering case studies as part of impact assessment processes. Ensure robust processes are in place for the cleaning, storage and recording of data. Use MEL results to produce research reports and other impact communications for different audiences Contribute to the development of new systems, procedures and tools for programme data collection and analysis. Management of self Continue to identify opportunities for own development including keeping knowledge up to date and relevant. Learning Support the coordination of research work and analysis of findings to promote and support an organisational culture of learning and continuous improvement. Build the capacity of programmes staff and partners in the UK and overseas in relation to MEL. Develop and deliver appropriate training on this. Work collaboratively across the organisation to enhance and improve understanding of the impact of our work. Support policy and research projects, contributing to the collation and reporting of findings, to formulate policy positions which inform decision making. Support the research and development of products and materials that communicate key information about Mary s Meals programmes and their impact, to support our work with supporters and funders. Travel This role requires regular travel to Mary s Meals programme countries. This role undertakes regulated work with children and you will be required to be registered with the Protected Vulnerable Group Scheme. 6

7 Qualifications and experience Essential Skills/Experience At least 2 years post-graduating work experience. Highly numerate, with strong data analysis skills and a knowledge of statistics. Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret data. Experience of planning and implementing research projects. Experience of data collection, data cleaning, data management and data storage. Strong organisational, planning and prioritisation skills. Experience of working/volunteering in a developing country context. Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in different countries and settings. Experience of writing research reports and other research/data-led communications for different audiences. Motivation for the vision, mission and values of Mary s Meals Able to adapt and respond to changing demands in fast-paced environment. Desirable Skills/Experience Experience of using digital tools for data collection. Experience of developing and implementing monitoring evaluation and learning (MEL) systems Experience of delivering training and developing training materials Experience of building staff capacity Knowledge and understanding of school feeding programmes 7
