Job description for the post of: Post-doctoral Research Fellow for the Being Me with IBD Study EHR Fixed Term, Part Time 0.5FTE for 12 months Accountable to Reporting to: Dean of Faculty of Health & Social Care Professor Bernie Carter, FOHSC The Post This post is part of a Crohn s and Colitis UK research award. Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), affecting more than 300,000 people in the UK 1. The symptoms of IBD include diarrhoea, cramping, fatigue, loss of weight, poor appetite, anaemia and mouth ulcers. The symptoms and treatment can cause stigma, fear and isolation. 1 This study is aiming to look at how having IBD influences the friendships that young people (aged years) have, and whether it affects how lonely, connected or in control they feel. The study is being undertaken in three clinical settings: two in Liverpool and one in London. The post holder will be a key member of the team and will have core responsibility for undertaking data collection within the two Liverpool settings and providing support for the London setting. Data collection will involve two phases. Phase 1 involves the administration of validated questionnaires and Phase 2 qualitative interviews supported by the use of a friendship map and photographs/images of friendships The post-holder will also have responsibility for recruitment, data entry and analysis. Experience of undertaking research with young people is desirable as is the ability to undertake research within health care settings. The successful candidate should be familiar with the principles of ethical conduct in research and in particular those ethical issues that specifically pertain to working with young people.

2 This is an exciting opportunity for a researcher to make a major contribution to an important project and to join the staff within the Children, Young People and Families theme in Faculty of Health and Social Care. Duties and responsibilities The post holder will report to Professor Bernie Carter. The post holder will be expected to carry out the following as and when required. Responsibilities a) Work within the study team with primary responsibility for data collection and analysis (both qualitative and quantitative research components). b) Be responsible for co-ordinating the data collection with other team members and health care professionals within the hospital setting. c) Co-ordinate and undertake the process of data analysis. d) Be responsible for and work with other team members to ensure ongoing dissemination of the study via social media (webinars, twitter etc.) e) Lead on engagement with the e-advisory Panel (group of young people with IBD) f) Be responsible for drafting reports and articles. g) Engage with the young people and professionals in the study in a way which is sensitive to their needs. h) Work collaboratively with staff within and external to the research team, particularly the Principal Investigators at the clinical sites, and coordinate communication with stakeholders to support the smooth running of the study. i) Plan, co-ordinate and minute team meetings j) Participate in relevant professional activities and personal development that is appropriate to the study and which will enhance performance. k) Be responsible for seeking ways of improving performance by reflecting on involvement in the study. l) Ensure compliance with ethical approval, data management, university liability and health and safety requirements in all aspects of work. Duties a) Undertake day-to-day research activity, co-ordinate and undertake data collection, undertake analysis and contribute intellectually to the study through critical engagement with all aspects of work b) Maintain oversight of data collection. c) Travel as required in relation to data collection, attending meetings and training. d) Attend and contribute to research meetings as required, including faceto-face meetings and remote meetings e) Communicate with study team effectively and be able to present feedback on progress and outcomes of the study.

3 f) Contribute to the dissemination of the study to internal stakeholders and externally via social media, papers at conferences, study days, national and international meetings, as appropriate. g) Review and synthesise existing research literature pertinent to the study. h) Produce written work of a high standard for submission to high quality peer reviewed journals. i) Keep detailed records of research meetings, events and contact with children and parents/carers in line with data protection policies. j) Identify and report any concerns encountered using appropriate strategies In addition to the above duties all staff are required to: a) Participate in Edge Hill University s Performance Review scheme. b) Respect confidentiality. Confidential information should be kept in confidence and not released to unauthorised persons. c) Comply with legislation and adhere to Edge Hill University s policies and procedures and attend appropriate training as required, including Health and Safety. d) Manage and enhance their own personal performance. e) Undertake appropriate learning and development activities as required f) Participate in work-related training and staff development. g) Adhere to Edge Hill University s environment policy and guidelines and undertake tasks in a sustainable manner. h) Demonstrate excellent Customer Care in dealing with all customers Salary: Grade 7, Points ,799-32,548 per annum, pro rata Hours : 18.5 hours per week Candidates should note that shortlisting will be based on information provided on the application form with regard to the applicant s ability to meet the criteria outlined in the Person Specification attached. It is important to note that the successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and that this will form part of the conditions of offer of employment. The candidates shortlisted will undergo an interview which will comprise of:- 1. A short presentation (10 mins) describing a previous project or piece of work in which they undertook research and engaged effectively with participants. 2. A structured interview conducted by key members of the Children, Young People and Families Research Theme.

4 PERSON SPECIFICATION FORM Post-doctoral Research Fellow for the Being Me with IBD Study EHR Fixed term 0.5 FTE, for 12 months CRITERIA Applicants should be able to provide evidence of their ability to meet the following criteria. Qualifications 1 A high level of academic achievement as evidenced by a good first degree and a PhD (or working towards a PhD) in a relevant field. Experience, skills and knowledge 2 Outstanding interpersonal skills to ensure sensitive working with young people and health professionals. 3 Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people, individually and in groups, both orally and in writing and via social media 4 Ability to explain the research to potential participants and to gain informed consent/assent as appropriate. 5 Experience of the processes involved in developing research projects from creation of materials, ethics, implementation and dissemination. 6 Experience of undertaking quantitative and qualitative research (including data collection, analysis and writing). 7 Experienced in using data analysis software and other relevant research-related software (e.g., SPSS, Ref Works, NVivo or equivalent) 8 Demonstrated ability to publish at attainable levels of national excellence in relevant peer reviewed journals.
