This role is key to enabling Mind to achieve this mission in respect of racialised and other marginalised groups. As Equality Improvement Manager you will: Support the organisation to develop and implement Mind s strategy on better mental health for marginalised groups Enable mental health services (including Mind services locally and nationally) to address the needs of marginalised groups Work in partnership across Mind to enable projects and programmes to fully account for the needs of marginalised groups Build mental health resilience amongst marginalised groups through enabling effective community-based responses to mental health problems Foster productive partnerships between Mind, marginalised groups, and relevant organisations Provide expert advice & guidance on marginalised groups across Mind You will be based in the Networks and Communities Department at Mind, reporting to the Head of Equality Improvement. The Department works in partnership with Mind s extensive networks across England and Wales, harnessing the power of the local and the national working together. Scope of the job Through assisting in the development of, and leading on implementing agreed priorities, you will support the Head of Equality Improvement to provide a strategic lead on issues related to the mental health needs of people from marginalised groups. You will also be responsible for leading programmes to deliver these priorities. 2016: Equality Improvement Manager JD and PS Grade E Page 1 of 5

2 You will work across Mind and with external stakeholders to achieve agreed outcomes that benefit the mental health needs of marginalised groups in accordance with Mind s values. Mind aims to ensure that the needs and interests of mental health service users, women, black and minority ethnic communities, disabled people, people of all ages, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender are reflected in all activities. You will be expected to contribute to this aim. Key responsibilities 1. Lead the implementation of Mind s strategy on marginalised groups and relevant work programmes as directed by the Head of Equality Improvement 2. Function as a change-agent within Mind, enabling the needs of marginalised groups to be prioritised across work programs throughout the organisation 3. Lead on the cultivation and maintenance of productive working relationships with marginalised groups and organisations representing the interest of these groups. 4. Work in partnership with Local Mind leaders, supporting Local Minds to more effectively respond to the needs of marginalised groups 5. Provide advice and guidance across Mind on factoring marginalised groups into the development and delivery of work programmes. 6. Manage line reports, temporary staff, volunteers and consultants (as necessary). 7. Represent Mind to the media, and on national forums and at external meetings 8. Regularly review performance against targets and budgets (including re-forecasting), providing regular activity and financial reports for the management and governance teams and funders, detailing delivery against targets 9. Provide regular and relevant internal and external communications about the team s work 10. Ensure the views of people with experience of mental health problems inform and guide all of the team s work and actively seek opportunities to involve people with lived experience in planning and delivery 11. Ensure the views of people from marginalised groups with experience of mental health problems inform and guide all of the allocated equality improvement work, and actively seek opportunities to involve people with lived experience in planning and delivery 12. Contribute to the strategic development of the Networks and Communities Department 13. Work in a positive, collaborative and cross-organisational way across One Mind, proactively identifying and maximising synergies between work across teams throughout the organisation and with partners 14. 3 Expectations You will be expected to: 1. To ensure all responsibilities and activities discharged within the post are consistent with the terms and spirit of Mind s policies 2. The post will be routinely expected to travel across England and Wales, including overnight stays away from home, and occasionally work outside normal working hours 3. 4 Mind Person specification: Equality Improvement Manager Essential criteria 1. Relevant and demonstrable previous experience of working with marginalised groups within community-based settings 2. Substantial knowledge and understanding of excellent practice and innovation in the development and delivery of mental health related services to marginalised groups 3. Understanding of the issues faced by the voluntary sector in the provision of health and social care, in particular in relation to marginalised groups 4. Substantial experience of implementing strategy. Able to look for and see the bigger picture and think laterally, with experience of implementing strategies and designing and adapting models and interventions 5. Solid programme, project and budget management skills, with a track record of delivering excellent performance against agreed targets and objectives on strategically important and complex programmes. (At/equivalent to PRINCE2 level of project management proficiency) 6. Excellent knowledge of the health and social care funding, strategy and delivery environment. Experience of analysing strategic implications and applying these to programmes of work and organisations 7. A track record in working successfully in partnership with users of services and beneficiaries to ensure they are integral to the leadership and delivery of work projects 8. Demonstrably excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to inspire and engage internal and external audiences on highly complex issues, and deliver formal reports and presentations to funders 9. An adept and confident networker across a breadth of sectors relevant to the work area with demonstrable ability to quickly establish personal credibility, and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with organisations and individuals with differing perspectives and agendas. 10. Expertise in and aptitude for establishing and managing complex partnerships and structuring a wide range of relationships. Highly effective influencing and negotiation skills and political judgment, with solid experience of senior relationship management 11. A proven track record on fully incorporating equality and diversity into areas of responsibility in a work setting 12. Experience of working within a team, successfully contributing to shared endeavours 13. Experience of managing staff, as well as evidence of having worked effectively across traditional management structures and boundaries 14. A commitment to Mind s aims and values, including how these should be reflected in local service delivery. Plus an understanding of and commitment to Mind s equal opportunity policy 15.
