READY FOR THE ADVENTURE? TEAM UK & HQ VOLUNTEERS CANDIDATE PACK

ABOUT US Overview of Scouting We are the UK s biggest mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6 to 25 year olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities. Scouts helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world. What do Scouts do? Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, expeditions overseas, photography, climbing and zorbing. As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, computer programming or even how to fly a plane. There s something for every young person. It s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world. What do volunteers do? This everyday adventure is possible thanks to our adult volunteers, who support Scouts in a wide range of roles from working directly with young people, to helping manage a Group, to being a charity Trustee. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities for adventure, training fun and friendship. Our award winning training scheme for volunteers means that adults get as much from Scouts as young people. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. Over 90% of Scout volunteers say that their skills and experiences have been useful in their work or personal life. Key facts and figures The Scout Association is a national charity and exists by authority of a Royal Charter granted in 1912 and supplemented by further charters granted by King George V and Queen Elizabeth II. It was founded in With a membership of nearly 620,000 young people and adult leaders (2016/17 was our twelfth consecutive year of youth membership growth), it is the largest mixed youth movement in the UK. Scouting activity is delivered through 7,000-plus community based Scout Groups nationwide (all independent charities in their own right). The Association is widely recognised and is one of the most trusted charities in the UK, giving it a significant level of influence and responsibility. Scouting s greatest strength lies in its grass roots. It is locally that The Scout Association is best able to identify and work directly with young people most in need. One of the reasons Robert Baden-Powell started Scouting was to give inner city children a second chance. By taking then out of the city slums and into the country, he gave them a new set of experiences, a new sense of themselves and consequently a new view of the world. This commitment remains central to Scouting. Today Scouting is seeing record growth, regionally, nationally and internationally. We believe that through the everyday adventure of Scouting, young people and adult volunteers regularly experience new challenges that enrich and change their lives. We are approaching the end of our strategy; the Beyond 2018 strategy launches in the Spring. Page 2

OUR STRATEGY A new strategic plan for Scouting across the UK is nearing completion to secure a strategic direction through to 2023 and to grow on the success of the current plan. Team UK and the respective teams who report into this group, will play a key part in leading the delivery of this strategy across the UK. More details on the work towards our new plan are available at scouts.org.uk/beyond2018 Our Vision By 2023 we will have prepared more young people with skills for life, supported by amazing leaders delivering an inspiring programme. We will be: growing; more inclusive; shaped by young people; and making a bigger impact in our communities. Further information on our current strategic objectives are provided on our website at scouts2018.org/ Our Strategic Objectives As a movement we aim to grow, become more inclusive and youth shaped, while making a positive impact in our communities. Our outcomes: By delivering this strategy we will achieve the following outcomes against the strategic objectives: Growth Goal 50k more young people aged 6-18, 10k more section leaders (inc section assistants) and 5k more Young Leaders. Inclusion Goal Demographic of adult volunteers reflects society. Introduction of provision in 500 more areas of deprivation Youth shaped Goal Impact survey shows young people shaped their Scouting, 50% young people achieve top awards Community Impact Goal Impact survey shows young people undertook social action, 50% young people achieve top awards SCOUTING S FUNDAMENTALS Our Mission Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. Our Values As Scouts, these values guide us: integrity, respect, care, belief and co-operation. Further information on our fundamentals, including details of our values, are provided on our website at scouts.org.uk/about-us/key-policies/fundamentals-of-scouting SCOUTING S KEY POLICIES In common with all members of The Scout Association, the UK Youth Commissioner is required to promote and follow our key policies. The policies cover: child protection; equal opportunities; religion; and safety. These policies are fully explained on our website at scouts.org.uk/about-us/key-policies Page 3

THE OPEN CALL PROCESS With the launch of our new strategy there are several exciting opportunities for volunteers to lead and support Scouting as the Beyond 2018 strategy starts. We are recruiting for these roles via an open call process. This means that, rather than individuals applying for specific roles, we are asking individuals to look at the competency matrix we have put together that lists the competencies we believe are necessary for us to deliver our Beyond 2018 strategy, and then tell us about their relevant skills and experience so that we can determine whether they might be suitable for one or more of the roles we think we need. The Competency Matrix can be found in the appendix at the end of this document. The most important selection criteria are practical experience, the ability to work in a team, motivation and time commitment. Please note that the main selection process will take place on Sunday 25th March in or around the London area. To be considered you must be available on this date for selection. Roles The recruitment is for roles within Team UK and the teams reporting into those roles. Additionally, we are looking for suitable candidates to form part of the programme and project boards who will be delivering on specific aspects of the Beyond 2018 strategy. All the roles being recruited for fall within the three pillars of work of the new strategy; these being, People and Perception People Perception More, well trained, better supported and motivated adult volunteers, and young people, from diverse backgrounds A fun, enjoyable, high quality programme consistently delivered and supported by simple (digital) tools Scouting is clearly understood, more visible, trusted, respected and widely seen as playing a key role in today s society. In more detail, this means we are looking for people to take on roles in the following areas: Team UK & National teams: Development Development - Curriculum Development - Compliance delivery delivery support Perception Inclusion People - Volunteer journey People - Governance support People - Volunteer training & Development & Project Boards Beyond 2018 strategy delivery: sponsors Senior users Senior suppliers Project team members Page 4

Role Requirements In addition to the specific competencies listed in the matrix at the end of this pack, the following requirements also apply: Communication skills: Practical experience: Knowledge: Team working: Self-motivation: Leadership: (for Team UK and National team roles only) Personal Qualities: Time commitment: The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to participate in discussions, interact via e- mail, produce written content and read documents. The ability to speak and present publicly in a clear, articulate and motivating way. For some roles, the ability to effectively chair meetings would also be an advantage. Relevant practical experience in the one of the role areas (programme, perception, people, inclusion), either from a Scouting or professional background. The experience should be of practical relevance and based on the application of sound theory. Theoretical knowledge alone is not sufficient. The knowledge necessary to perform effectively in one of the role areas (programme, perception, people, inclusion). This knowledge may have come from studies, trainings and/or long experience. The ability to work in a team, to listen to other team members, to find compromise and consensus in discussions, to accept and value the opinions of others. These roles will be expected to work in partnership with staff across the Headquarters team. Be very motivated to contribute to the success of the implementation of the new strategy and be willing to bring in his/her own ideas and creativity. Have experience in effectively managing and leading teams of volunteers within a Scouting context. This experience should have been gained over a period of 2 years or more and ideally from different roles. Professional leadership experience alone is not sufficient; the volunteering context is crucial to this role. Additionally, the ability to lead, manage, inspire and motivate people at a distance and in a voluntary environment to achieve results. Be approachable at all reasonable times; have commitment to The Scout Association s Fundamentals; have no envisaged barriers to obtaining enhanced DBS disclosure; have the ability to use technology, especially mobile , to carry out a range of tasks (confident in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint); have the ability to quickly assimilate a broad overall knowledge of Scouting s policies and structures. Sufficient time available for the positions, including weekend engagements, sometimes including extensive travel. These roles require a significant time commitment; whilst this will differ depending on the role, it will include attendance at weekend meetings throughout the year around the UK but particularly in London. Additionally, there will be a requirement as well as approximately six to eight hours per week to manage administration ( , skype & telephone calls primarily). Page 5

Terms of appointment: The appointments will be for differing time periods dependent on the specific role. Team UK and the HQ team roles are likely to be for an initial term of 3 years (subject to annual review with the volunteer line manager), with the potential for re-appointment for a further period. & project board roles will be for the expected duration of the respective projects. These are voluntary leadership roles and as such are unremunerated, however, reasonable expenses in line with the Association s Expenses Policy will be paid. In common with all national appointments, successful candidates for roles will be assigned a Training Adviser and will undertake a manager Wood Badge. Successful applicants for roles must also become a member of The Scout Association, including successful conclusion of our vetting process and making the Promise. HOW TO APPLY The application form can be found towards the end of this pack. It is also available as a standalone document in MS Word format for ease of completion.
