2 Dear Colleague Thank you for your interest in becoming a trustee of Border Crossings. We are currently recruiting new members of our board at a particularly exciting time in the organisation s history. Led by our Chair, Dr. Alastair Niven LVO OBE, the board of trustees oversees the development of the company and the high-level delivery of its Strategic Plan, working closely with Associate Director Lucy Dunkerley and myself. There are also rewarding opportunities to see our artistic and participatory work at firsthand in theatres, schools, site-specific spaces and in the open air. We welcome applications from all sectors of the community, and in particular are looking for trustees who bring skills, experience and a track record in the following areas: theatre / the arts; law; marketing and PR; fundraising; international relations; cultural diversity. As an organisation which works with a broad range of diverse communities within the UK and overseas, we are particularly keen to attract trustees who have a good knowledge of and contacts in these areas. The organisation is currently supported by project grants from Arts Council England and a broad range of other funders, including overseas government agencies, national and international foundations, and the European Union. The confidence shown in us by these funders is matched by our own ambition and excitement in achieving more for the company and consolidating our position as a leading intercultural theatre company, culture and education provider for the globalised world of today. The new trustees will help us deliver the artistic, participation and learning plans set out in our strategic plan for the coming years. 3 Trustee Role Description Overall responsibilities The Trustees are responsible to all stakeholders, including the Charities Commission, Registrar of Companies, funders and other interested parties. The Artistic Director is the Chief Executive Officer of Border Crossings and reports to the Board of Trustees. The Trustees of the Board of Border Crossings are responsible for ensuring the company delivers its mission through the Strategic Plan. Working in partnership with Artistic Director, the Board is responsible for ensuring that Border Crossings builds its reputation artistically and through its community engagement, participation and learning programmes; increases and broadens its audiences; and is financially viable. This is a non-executive leadership responsibility with a duty to safeguard the long-term future of Border Crossings. As Trustees of a Registered Charity, theses positions are unpaid. An effective board will provide good governance and leadership by: 1. Understanding its role 2. Ensuring delivery of the organisation s vision and purpose 3. Working effectively both as individuals and as a team 4. Exercising effective and appropriate control 5. Behaving with integrity 6. Being open and accountable 1 Understanding its role: All Trustees will understand the extent and boundaries of their role as nonexecutive directors They will understand the strategic role of the board and not engage in operational matters They will safeguard the vision and values of Border Crossings The Board will act in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association 2 Ensuring delivery of the organisation s vision and purpose: All Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings is acting in line with its vision and purpose The Trustees will receive and review regular and timely information from staff / officers The Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings has appropriate procedures and systems for monitoring the outputs, outcomes and impact of its work The Trustees will ensure key stakeholders are involved, as appropriate, in Border Crossings planning and decision-making The Trustees will engage actively in the fundraising activities necessary to achieve Border Crossings mission 3 Working effectively both as individuals and as a team: The Trustees will ensure that they receive appropriate advice (internal or external) in their decision-making processes The Board as a whole will include the appropriate range of skills, experience, understanding and backgrounds to run Border Crossings effectively
4 The Trustees will undertake induction and other relevant training as required The Trustees will ensure they have appropriate performance management systems and processes in place to monitor the performance of the organisation All Trustees will ensure the Board monitors its own performance and ensures it has an appropriate strategy for ongoing Board recruitment and development All Board recruitment should be open and transparent in line with the principles of public office All Trustees will act in accordance with Border Crossings governing documents, and relevant legislative and regulatory requirements 4 Exercising effective and appropriate control: All Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings has an appropriate system of internal controls and that these are regularly monitored The Trustees will ensure the assets and property of Border Crossings are appropriately safeguarded The Trustees will ensure they understand the levels of risk involved in undertaking the work of Border Crossings and that these are appropriately monitored and mitigated The Trustees will take appropriate professional advice before making key decisions that may impact on the future of Border Crossings 5 Behaving with integrity: All Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings values and ethos are enshrined in its policies and practices The Trustees will ensure that the Board as a whole fosters a working environment that encourages constructive challenge and respects different perspectives The Trustees will act honestly in all matters and declare potential conflicts of interest even if their relevance or impact is unclear The Trustees will ensure that no single stakeholder will exercise undue influence Where Trustees are in positions of representing Border Crossings they will ensure that there is no confusion between their personal views and those of the organisation All Trustees will uphold the confidentiality of their meetings and the internal activities of Border Crossings as appropriate 6 Being open and accountable: All Trustees will ensure there is a strategy for the regular and effective communication with all stakeholders The Trustees will engage in a process that ensures Border Crossings learns from its past successes and mistakes, and ensure external perspectives are taken into account where appropriate The Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings upholds the principles of equality and diversity, ensuring it is fair and open to all sections of its communities The Trustees will ensure that Border Crossings engages in its responsibilities towards its wider communities, society and the environment Practical Details The Board will meet six times annually including the AGM plus a full day meeting for Strategic Planning. Most meetings are held in the evenings at Border Crossings Wood Green office from 6-8pm. Additionally, Board members are expected to attend company events and performances.
5 History, Vision and Mission Border Crossings creates new intercultural, multi-media theatre in response to the contemporary globalised world. The company works across the borders between cultures and art forms, and between nations and peoples. Since 1995, Border Crossings has collaborated with artists and companies from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, India, Ireland, Mauritius, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sweden, the USA and Zimbabwe, as well as the diverse communities of the UK. Border Crossings productions have toured the UK, Brazil, China, Egypt, France, Hungary, India, Mauritius, Mexico, the Seychelles, Sweden and Zimbabwe. Key projects have included: ORIGINS FESTIVAL OF FIRST NATIONS Every two years, Border Crossings welcomes First Nations artists to London, for a two-week celebration of cultures from whom we have so much to learn about community, ceremony, environment and democracy. The Festival features theatre, film, music, visual art, participatory workshops and special events like our 2015 Outdoor event with the Voladores de Papantla. Each Festival has a full Participation and Learning programme. PLAYS OF LOVE AND WAR In 2014, we collaborated with Ashtar Theatre from Palestine to present THIS FLESH IS MINE, a new adaptation of Homer s Iliad by Brian Woolland, which used the myth to throw new light on contemporary Middle Eastern conflicts. This highly acclaimed production was revived in 2016, paired with a sequel called WHEN NOBODY RETURNS, based on the Odyssey. THE ORIENTATIONS TRILOGY From , Border Crossings worked with artists from China, India, France, Sweden, the UK and the USA to create and perform a ground-breaking trilogy of multi-media performances, incorporating video and physical theatre alongside traditional Asian forms and multiple languages. Performed in Britain, China and Sweden with EU support, THE ORIENTATIONS TRILOGY redefined intercultural performance. VISION Border Crossings will be a global leader in intercultural dialogue between artists and audiences, working through theatre to facilitate mutual understanding, positive development and peace. MISSION In response to the contemporary globalised world, Border Crossings creates a theatrical and cultural space in which peoples come together as equals for creativity and dialogue.
6 From the Strategic Plan Border Crossings needs support to grow as an organisation, becoming a global leader in intercultural dialogue between artists and audiences. No other arts organisation works with and champions such a broad range of peoples, practices and ideas. We collaborate with some of the most important artists in the world today. We produce invigorating, provocative and exhilarating theatre. Our productions are inspired by sustained engagement with diverse communities, young people and international exchange. Over two decades, we have worked with artists from more than twenty countries, toured across four continents, and founded the UK s only Festival of indigenous cultures. Supporting the work of Border Crossings is the chance to be part of a unique engagement between international and UK artists, diverse communities in London and key opinion formers.
