2 B A C K G R O U N D The British Council West Africa arts programme has set out to focus supporting young creatives between the ages of 18 and 35: They hope to Increase in the number & quality of UK collaborations, exchanges and connections with artists and creative entrepreneurs in West Africa. 2. Stronger networks & communities of young artists in West Africa who have a stronger voice in, and for, their communities & can engage in more institutional UK-WA partnerships. 3. More up-to-date and diverse awareness and representation of WA arts in the UK and vice versa.
3 A B O U T T H E P R O J E C T In line with the outlined objectives, from August March 2018 the British Council are delivering a series of multidisciplinary arts and creative economy activities to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Ghana s independence. The majority of the activity will take place during 'The Language That We Speak' a six-day pop-up creative hub that will see Pop Up Africa & Sweet Roots Media turning the British Council, Ghana's Skills Hub and Innovation Centre into a collaborative work-space. The workspace will be for young artists, creatives, designers, technologists, hackers and makers from Ghana and the UK to connect, share ideas and build physical outputs.
4 T H E P R O J E C T P R O G R A M M E Dates: Monday 27th November-Saturday 2nd November 2017 'The Language That We Speak will explore identity through different art forms. Supported by the British Council, Pop Up Africa and Sweet Roots Media are working together to curate a temporary hub of creative activities which will include interactive installations, free workshops, panel discussions, a maker s market, film night and much more
5 M A K E R ' S M A R K E T Date: Saturday 2nd December 2017 Trade Trade Time: 12pm-6pm The Maker's market will be taking place on the afternoon of the final day of the programme. In line with the theme of the programme, the makers market is a platform for local makers to showcase and sell their goods to a wider audience. The maker's market will be taking place in the court yard of the British Council's new Accra Innovation Centre in the beautiful purpose built courtyard. We anticipate a footfall of up to 300 people throughout the course of the afternoon.
6 M A K E R ' S M A R K E T To participate traders need to complete the online trade application form, this can be found at the link below; Once the form has been completed and your trade application confirmed to have been successful, a trade fee of 145 GHC is to be paid. There are 35 trade spaces in total, there is limited space for each trade category, space will be given on a first come first served basis. Details for set up & arrival will be sent out to all traders 2 weeks before the event.
7 T H E P R O J E C T C U R A T O R S - P O P U P A F R I C A Pop Up Africa is an Africa focused pop up events company, who curate and run creative projects & retail events across iconic spaces in the UK and Sub- Saharan Africa. The idea is to bring a new dimension to the space whilst celebrating culture and giving creatives and small businesses a platform to sell and promote their work to a wider audience. Pop Up Africa want to see more African brands on the mainstream market, empower African creatives and business owners and encourage people to build cross boarder strategic relationships. Pop Up Africa events vary from trade events, to street food markets, creative cultural festivals, private/corporate functions, panel discussions, networking seminars and workshops.
8 M A K E R S M A R K E T I N F R O A M T I O N P A C K T H E P R O J E C T C U R A T O R S - P O P U P A F R I C A Founded in 2013 Africa at Spitalfields is Pop Up Africa s flagship event and London s biggest Africa inspired pop up retail experience. Pop Up Africa s creative team takes over London s renowned Spitalfields and transforms it into an African retail experience here is a link to recent BBC Coverage of this event; Africa Utopia Pop Up Africa partner with the Southbank Centre to curate the food programme for Africa Utopia which is an annual festival celebrating the arts and culture of one of the world's most dynamic and fast-changing continents. Social Media Week Lagos Pop Up Africa led a panel discussion where a group of panelists were invited to share their views on how social media is harnessing the profile of food from across Africa on an international market, what they anticipate the future holds. Stories From Senegal In partnership with Facebook a panel Exploring Senegal through Social Media The event featured a digital exhibition of photographic art celebrating some of Senegal s leading photographers work.
9 T H E P R O J E C T C U R A T O R S S W E E T R O O T S M E D I A Maame Adjei started Sweet Roots Media in 2013 as a collective for producers, graphic designers, content creators and creative artists to create and tell stories that expand the vision and sometimes narrow perceptions of her continent. Sweet Roots Media continuously collaborates with creatives in Ghana to grow the art space and encourage those passionate about the arts to pursue their creative visions.
