10 NEW Blackleg Resistance Identification Model for DEKALB Canola Hybrids WHY is DEKALB implementing this new model? DEKALB is adopting new blackleg resistance labels to increase transparency and help you to make better management decisions for your farm. By DEKALB openly disclosing our resistance sources, you can more effectively rotate DEKALB hybrids with different resistance genes to better control blackleg on your farm. HOW does the new label differ from the previous label? The new label consists of two components: the (1) blackleg field resistance label, as well as the (2) major resistance gene label. This gives information on both the blackleg infection rates across multiple field locations, as well as the race specific genes present. Field resistance to blackleg infection is based on both the non-specific background resistance to all blackleg, and the major resistance genes that provide very strong resistance to specific blackleg races. Our previous label only included the blackleg field resistance general infection rating (% of Westar) and did not disclose any information on the specific resistance genes. Our new label will provide both the percent of Westar and the specific resistance genes. PART 1 Blackleg Field Resistance Label This label rates the hybrid on a scale from resistant (R) to susceptible (S) based on the blackleg infection of the hybrid as a percent of the infection of the susceptible variety, Westar, across multiple field trials. PART 2 NEW Major Resistance Gene Label This label denotes any major genes contributing to the hybrid s blackleg resistance based on this key: Label A Resistance Gene RLM1 / LEPR3 Label Infection rating (% of Westar) B C RLM2 RLM3 R (Resistant) % D LEPR1 MR (Moderately Resistant) % E 1 RLM4 MS (Moderate Susceptible) % E 2 RLM7 S (Susceptible) % F RLM9 G RLMS H LEPR2 X Unknown WHAT does the new label look like? Example: HYBRID X = R(AC) Blackleg Field Major Resistance Resistance Label Gene Label Resistant (0-29.9% of Westar) R (AC) RLM1 / LEPR3 Resistance Gene RLM3 Resistance Gene In this example, Hybrid X has a blackleg field infection rating that is less than 29% of Westar and possesses RLM3 and RLM1 / LEPR3 resistance genes.

11 HOW can I use this new information to help manage blackleg on my farm? If blackleg is not an issue on your farm, continue to use the hybrid that has the best overall agronomic fit for your land However, if blackleg is detected in your field, with this new labeling system, you can rotate to a hybrid with a different major blackleg resistance gene or package to help reduce resistance breakdown and better defend against the disease DEKALB offers a variety of blackleg packages across the canola lineup giving you options if you come across blackleg in your field. Below are rotation recommendations if you encounter blackleg, for each DEKALB canola hybrid. Hybrid Blackleg Resistance Label Major Resistance Genes Rotation Recommendations CANOLA RR R (C) Rlm3 If blackleg is observed, rotate to RR, CR or BL. If significant blackleg infection is observed, rotate to BL CR R (AC) Rlm3 LepR3 If blackleg is observed, and if no clubroot is present, rotate to RR or BL RR R (CG) Rlm3 RlmS If blackleg is observed, rotate to BL BL R (ACG) Rlm3 LepR3 RlmS If blackleg is observed, lengthen canola rotation. REMEMBER Crop rotation is still vitally important Scouting will be extremely important to identify blackleg resistance breakdown A blackleg fungicide should be considered as another tool to manage blackleg risk If you have any questions about the new blackleg resistance labels, visit DEKALB.ca for more information or contact your local DEKALB Agronomist or Territory Account Manager. 11

32 OUTSMART WEEDS IN 3 STEPs Managing resistance isn t about using less glyphosate; it s about using herbicides effectively. Here s how: Mixtures work best. Tank mixes have been shown to be more effective than alternating single-mode applications (AKA rotating herbicides) when it comes to managing herbicide resistance Tank mix at least once per growing season. Add another effective mode of action to the tank with glyphosate. Group 1 and 2 herbicides are considered high risk, as many weed species are resistant to these herbicides. Using them can put more pressure on glyphosate to control tough weeds such as kochia, wild oats and cleavers. Don t rely solely on glyphosate or any one mode of action to control them. 1 about resistance and how it develops Know the truth Spice up your mix Add another effective mode of action to the tank Diversify Your Crop Rotation 2 Take advantage of pre-seed options. It s your easiest opportunity to include a tank mix in your herbicide program million Roundup Equivalent Litres were applied in the spring of Of those applications, 75.8% is applied alone, 2 which puts farmers at risk for selecting for resistance. 3 Grow three or more different crops in your rotation. It can help break cycles of disease, insects and weeds and give you more herbicide options. Weeds outsmart habits, not systems. Herbicide-tolerant crops don t cause resistance. The way we use them can. Visit MonsantoCMS.ca for more resistance insight and chemistry recommendations. 1 Beckie and Reboud, Selecting for Weed Resistance: Herbicide Rotation and Mixture. Weed Technology, 23: AgData 2016, Glyphosate BPI Report ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. Tank mixtures: The applicable labeling for each product must be in the possession of the user at the time of application. Follow applicable use instructions, including application rates, precautions and restrictions of each product used in the tank mixture. Monsanto has not tested all tank mix product formulations for compatibility or performance other than specifically listed by brand name. Always predetermine the compatibility of tank mixtures by mixing small proportional quantities in advance. 33 References: CORN GR/SU/IS The hybrid/herbicide combination can result in plant height reduction, stand loss and suspected yield loss under very adverse environmental conditions, high rates or extreme soil ph levels or organic content. Use of drop nozzle spraying for post-emergence herbicides or planting in warm soils for incorporated herbicides may avoid interactions. Consult your DEKALB dealer for additional information. 1 CORN RELATIVE MATURITY Relative maturity (RM) can be used to compare product s maturity to existing products in the DEKALB lineup. The relative maturity of a hybrid is assessed by comparing the harvest maturity to established products with known RM ratings. Relative maturity assignments are based on four main components: Harvest moisture, Growing Degree Units (GDUs) to mid pollination (flowering), test weight, and plant health. 2 TARGET POPULATION Final plant population in thousands suggestions are based on medium to high yield environment. In fields with lower yield potential consider targeting slightly lower population. Adjust planting rate to suit individual field conditions. 3 HERBICIDE SAFETY Ratings are based on observations and research using herbicides at and above labeled rates to simulate extreme environmental conditions, misapplication and adverse soil ph or organic content. Either no adverse effects from the hybrid/herbicide combination were noted or only slight damage could be noted under adverse conditions or herbicide application at higher than label rates.
