High Yields Start with a Clean Field For years, glyphosate has been the go-to burn down product because it was an effective solution. But it s not that simple any more. Growers are facing greater weed control challenges, such as hard-to-kill winter weeds and perennials, not to mention glyphosate and Group 2 resistant kochia and cleavers all of which are on the increase across Alberta. A post-harvest burn down when possible and a pre-seed burn in the spring is the best way to ensure your crop gets the fast, uniform, vigourous start it needs to outcompete the weeds and set the stage for yield success. CANOLA2018/SEEDGUIDE 19

But glyphosate alone is no longer a viable option. To get effective broad-spectrum weed control, including control of resistant biotypes, two and sometimes even three active ingredients are now necessary. UFA has a number of pre-seed weed control tank mixes to choose from. Talk to your CAM about the best product fit for your farm. 25 Yield: More than Genetics Darold Niwa, Agronomic Specialist with UFA Yield is still the primary consideration when it comes to canola variety selection. And while the genetics tell you what a variety s yield potential is, whether or not it reaches that potential comes down, in large part, to crop management. Darold Niwa, Agronomic Specialist with UFA, has a formula he uses to illustrate the point: Y = G + E + M (Yield = Genetics + Environment + Management) 2018/SEEDGUIDE 21

The only part of that equation you have little control over is the environment. Other than choosing seeding and harvest dates, Mother Nature is in full control of growing conditions. It means that once you ve carefully selected your canola genetics, it s the management you apply to that crop the nutrient plan, seed depth, fertilizer placement, herbicide, fungicide and insecticide decisions which is key to unlocking its yield potential. Crop management is where growers have the most influence on yield, Niwa says. UFA is a trusted partner when making key management decisions throughout the year. We can help with advice and in-crop solutions that help you get the most out of your canola s genetic potential /SEEDGUIDE

Keep Clubroot Contained There are no chemical solutions for clubroot, so minimizing crop losses and disease spread comes down to practicing strict management techniques. 1. Long rotations. This is tough because canola tends to be the highest value crop on most farms, but as much as possible, keep rotations as long as possible to reduce clubroot spread and severity. 2. Clean equipment between fields. Roughly 200 pounds of soil can be carried out of a field on one piece of tillage equipment and is a major cause of introducing clubroot spores to a clean field. 3. Eliminate cruciferous volunteers and weeds. Take away hosts in non-canola years. 4. Plant clubroot resistant canola. Clubroot resistant canola genetics are getting better all the time with hybrids that show excellent yield potential, along with disease resistance. Not all clubroot resistant hybrids are the same and some of the newer ones carry resistance to different strains of the disease. UFA carries a number of clubroot resistant canola hybrids. Talk to your CAM about which one is best for your farm. 2018/SEEDGUIDE 23

Straight Cutting Canola To swath or not to swath? That s a question more and more canola growers are asking themselves as harvest approaches. The upsurge of exceptional new, shatter-resistant canola varieties means the pros (better yields and bigger seeds) often outweigh the cons. If you want to straight cut canola, start by choosing a hybrid with pod shatter technology then plant it on a field that has as little variation in it as possible. This will give the crop a better opportunity to mature and ripen evenly, which is key to a successful straight cutting operation. Here are a few other considerations for success: Desiccation. Even in the most uniform of fields, there s bound to be some variability in crop maturity. If that s the case, apply a pre-harvest desiccant to get the crop in perfect harvest-ready condition. Combine settings. From header type and configuration to reel and travel speeds to cutter height and more make sure your equipment is set to reduce shattering as much as possible /SEEDGUIDE

Variety characteristics. Some canola varieties that don t have pod shatter technology do have characteristics that make them equally good straight cut choices. Check seed company listings and local trial data. You may have to swath. Be prepared to swath if harvest conditions are working against straight cutting. For example: Frost is forecast and the crop isn t sufficiently dried down. Excessive green undergrowth will plug the combine. 2018/SEEDGUIDE 25

The Cleaver Problem Anecdotal evidence suggests that both non-resistant and Group 2 resistant biotypes are becoming more abundant in all canola-growing regions of Alberta. With their long, rope-like vines and hard-to-cleanout seeds, cleavers can not only slow harvest down by plugging up your combine, they can lead to a significant downgrading of your canola crop. Complicating the situation further, cleavers have adapted their growth habit over time where they used be strictly a fall issue, some populations are now emerging in the spring and can overtake canola seedlings quickly. Indeed, cleavers not controlled in the fall can be over a foot wide by spring. The situation warrants a renewed focus on burn down operations, both fall and spring. A postharvest burn down to get the fall-emerged weeds is ideal, weather permitting. Control spring-emerging populations while they re still small (2-whorl is ideal) with a pre-seed burn down. Also, use strategic tank mixes to control resistant populations. Talk to your local UFA CAM about our line of burn down products to help get cleavers under control /SEEDGUIDE

Sclerotinia - it s everywhere The fungus that causes sclerotinia stem rot is found in all canola-growing regions. And with so much canola acreage, all producers should consider their crops at risk of disease when conditions are favorable. Sclerotinia is incredibly destructive and causes more yield loss than any other canola disease. The more humid and wetter the weather, the greater the risk of disease outbreak and a foliar fungicide applied preventatively (between 20 and 50 per cent bloom) is still the best control strategy. UFA.com/Contact or , Option /SEEDGUIDE 29

Canola Diseases Measuring Blackleg UFA can help you assess crop disease problems and work with you to find solutions that are right for your farm s particular situation. Call your CAM any time to talk about the best way to protect your crops. As genetic sources of resistance start to lose some potency, blackleg has been on the rise again in recent years. Even low severity blackleg can result in yield loss of up to 20 per cent and the disease is becoming an issue for international trade both powerful reasons to have an effective management plan in place. The first step is to find out if the blackleg resistant genetics you re using are holding up. To do that, scout your fields in the fall right after straight cutting or swathing. You want to choose a few areas of the field to scout that give you a good representative sample of the overall field. Randomly choose 20 plants in a 100 square-foot area and clip the stems right at the soil surface with a pair of sheers. Use the images to the right to give each clipped stem a blackleg score, then average your results together to get an overall score for the field. If your field s blackleg severity score is 1.5 or higher, resistance could be breaking down in the field and you may need to think about switching to a different canola hybrid, lengthening rotations and definitely start to include a fungicide application in your budget and cropping plans /SEEDGUIDE

Quickroots Benefits Improved availability of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. T. virens 1. Breaking Bonds N K N K N Enhanced nutrient availability, which supports root and shoot growth. P P Plant Available Ca 2. Freeing Nutrients Ca++ B. a. P ---- Plant Available T. virens = Trichoderma virens B. a. = Bacillus amyloliquefaciens P = Phosphate Ca = Calcium Increased yield potential. Performance in a variety of soil conditions and types. How the technology works: 1. The biologicals Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Trichoderma virens have the ability to release phosphate in the soil not readily available to the plant. 2. Improved phosphate availability can lead to expanded root volume, which enhances nitrogen and potassium uptake. 3. This ultimately can enable optimal plant growth and increased yield potential.
