Are others using what was your unfair advantage?
A deficit of 250 KMTA exists with fish oil. We need new sources to bridge the gap
How to compete
A successful business has only two basic functions- marketing and innovation P E T E R D R U C K E R
Fishmeal and Oil Substitution Demand for fishmeal has put upward pressure on price. Substitutes are being used to provide nutrients from other sources. Increasing use of substitutes will increase demand for specialty fishmeal products eg., immunostimulants, attractants, hydrolysates, etc.
Consider all the derivatives of Corn Food products Cereals, snack foods, salad dressings, soft drink sweeteners, chewing gum, peanut butter, hominy grits, taco shells and other flour products, specialty corn including white corn, blue corn and popcorn Animal feeds Distiller s dried grain, gluten feed and meal, high-oil feed corn for cattle, swine, poultry and fish. Industrial products Soaps, paints, corks, linoleum, polish, adhesives, rubber substitutes, wallboard, dry-cell batteries, textile finishings, cosmetic powders, candles, dyes, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, insulation, wallpaper and other starch products. Fermentation products and byproducts Industrial alcohols, fuel ethanol, recyclable plastics, industrial enzymes, fuel octane enhancers, fuel oxygenates and solvents.
Components of Fishmeal Amino acids Balance is good, but not optimum for each species Shrimp require encapsulated amino acids. Fatty acids Fish oil has DHA and EPA Phospholipids Fishmeal has lecithin bound to highly unsaturated fatty acids Cholesterol Why give it to fish, when it is only essential for shrimp? Minerals Excessive Ca and P Focus on bioavailable trace minerals Attractants Especially important for shrimp Hormones Promoters of growth and reproduction Immunostimulants Disease Gut health
No. 1 Problem: Disease Sea Lice
Assessing the health of skin and gut tissues of fish
Improving Disease Resistance
Nutrigenomics Using a microarray to measure nutritional effects on gene expression patterns
Chemical signaling in Crustaceans 59
Response of Shrimp to Synthetic Attractant 60
Innovation Requires Research Objective Greater understanding of nutritional value of fishmeal and oil for key aquaculture species Center of Excellence Global network of experts and advisors Build database of nutrition information Testing, validation and quantifying techniques Facilities for laboratory testing and field trials
and let s not forget Sustainability
IFFO RS: improving sustainability of the seafood production chain Fisheries Fishery Vessel Port Processing Plant Fishmeal Factory Marketplace Operators Feed Mill Aquaculture Hatchery Farm Processing Plant
Social Issues Fundamental labor rights Worker safety and health Community relations
The only international multi-stakeholder collaboration with full supply chain participation addressing risks of forced labour, human trafficking and IUU Fishing in the seafood supply chain Practical solutions right now Seafood Task Force, Inc. Formerly the Shrimp Sustainable Supply Chain Task Force, Inc All rights reserved.
Current membership includes Seafood Task Force, Inc. Formerly the Shrimp Sustainable Supply Chain Task Force, Inc All rights reserved.
Conclusions Sustainability Continue to position IFFO RS and its FIPs as an integral element of the sustainable seafood production chain Innovation Invest in research to understand how to maximize value of fishmeal and oil and their derivatives Specialization Develop specialty marine ingredient products to balance and supplement the growing list of substitutes Tell the story Sustainable, nutritious, and essential for health
