Aquaculture OLHÃO PILOT PLANT (7 ha) Broodstock and larval rearing Broodstock management; Sperm and egg quality; Development of rearing protocols for new species; Optimization of feeding protocols; Larval nutrition requirements and digestive physiology Earth ponds Potential growth of new species; Assessment of new methodologies for disease prevention and treatment; Development and optimization of different rearing strategies; Certification. Off shore facilities Operational factors and support for sea cage aquaculture; Biological and environmental conditions to support farming; Potential growth and handling of fish; Technology transfer to the productive sector

Aquaculture TAVIRA SHELLFISH PILOT PLANT (13 ha) CLAM Ruditapes decussatus IMPROVE the broodstock conditioning and gamete quality STUDY the reproductive cycle of different geographic populations IMPROVE settlement and metamorphosis synchronisation APPLY/OPTIMIZE a low cost larvae/seed production system DEFINE a genetic basis for reproductive performance of different populations IDENTIFY the genes involved in oocyte maturation and in investment of clams reproduction, as well as markers (mrna or proteins) of clams oocyte quality OYSTERS C. angulataand C. gigas OPTIMIZE the larval and seed culture of C. angulata COMPARE the aquaculture performance of the Portuguese oyster C. angulata and the Japanese oyster C. gigas

Aquaculture PATHOLOGY OF AQUATIC ANIMALS Research activities Study of diseases in aquaculture and wild species; Prevention and control of major diseases through improved diagnostic techniques and early identification of disease processes; Promoting good practices zoosanitary prophylaxis of holdings; Contribution to the diagnosis and minimization of massive mortalities in wild; Collaboration with seafood industry in order to control zoonotic agents potentially transmitted Skills in the diagnostic area: Histopathology, Virology, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Molecular Biology (PCR - RFLP) National Reference Laboratory (NRL) For Mollusc Diseases Marteliose in flat oyster refuvar ref uvar ref uvar PCR OsHV virus
9 II. Seafood Upgrading The main objectives are to: DEVELOP research and technological innovation SUPPORT the fishing and aquaculture industry ADVICE stakeholders, authorities, fishery and health institutions CONTRIBUTE to a responsible production and consumption of seafood RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION
10 II. Seafood upgrading BIVALVE MOLLUSCS SAFETY Classification & monitoring of production and relaying areas. Establish a sampling programme of bivalve molluscs in the production area. Audit the labs that supply services to the producers. Keep the methodologies updated and validated. Participate regularly in intercomparision exercises. Two labs are NRL (national reference labs for bivalve molluscs microbiological quality and for chemical contaminants (toxic elements) in seafood)
